Halestorm SOLD OUT Victory Theatre!

Victory Theatre was the place to be on Wednesday night as Starset, The Pretty Reckless and Halestorm took the stage for a sold out rockin’ concert. The theatre was packed with fans and they helped the bands rock the night out! Starset took the stage at 7:30PM and was shortly followed by The Pretty Reckless who got the fans up out of the seats and singing and dancing to their favorite songs. Once Halestorm took the stage, no seat was being used, as there was no sitting down for their performance.

Halestorm would shout out to the fans and thank them for coming out and “filling the venue up for a rock concert on a Wednesday night.” Lzzy, Halestorm’s lead singer was energetic and kept the fans entertained the entire night.

“The community really showed up tonight to support three great rock bands,” stated Victory Theatre General Manager, Ben Bolander. “Having another sold out concert at Victory electrified the atmosphere in downtown Evansville.”

The Victory Theatre continues a busy schedule with The Fab Four on April 30, BoDeans May 2, Evansville Philharmonic concerts and Chris Tucker May 29.

Rep. Gail Riecken issues statement on state budget, regional medical campus

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Gail Riecken (D-Evansville) issued the statement below after voting against the biennial state budget proposal contained in House Bill 1001:

“Of course, the inclusion of some funding for the regional medical campus in downtown Evansville is a positive, but to simply leave it at that without exploring the full implications of the Republican state budget would be a mistake.

“By failing to include state funding for Ivy Tech Community College in the proposal, the budget effectively excludes close to 70 percent of the students that would be able to benefit from the scope of instruction that would be offered through the campus. Ivy Tech students would have been the prime beneficiaries of this project, yet they are being left out.

“That is wrong, and I have to wonder what Ivy Tech has done to incur the wrath of the Republicans who wrote this budget. I am pleased that the project can get under way, but to deny so many the opportunities they deserve to pursue a career in the field of health care does not sit well with me, and I cannot vote for a budget that makes that distinction.”

The City-County Observer is pleased to announce the addition of an awards ceremony called “Community Service Award”.  The “ Community Service Award”  will honor individuals that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to achieve remarkable things in our community. This years winners have done immeasurable charitable acts to assist non-profits entities, created economic growth and enhanced the employability opportunities for people in our community.  Our 1st Annual CCO “Community Service Awards” recognition luncheon will honor eight (8) local “Community Achiever’s” under the age of 45 years old. They are recognized for the various ways that they have given back to the Greater Evansville Area.

The City-County Observer applauds the efforts of individuals based on their professional, political and philanthropic contributions in the Tri-State Area.  Our selection committie reviewed a 113 candidates list to be consider for the eight (8) “Community Service Awards”.  Our eight winners will be  acknowledged during a recognition luncheon on Monday,  June 8, 2015 at Tropicana Casino inside the Walnut Room at the Executive Center.

IS IT TRUE Democratic State Representative Gail Riecken yesterday issued a direct and pointed statement about the IU Medical school state funding? … Representative Riecken said “I am genuinely enthusiastic and excited about the IU Medical School to be located in Evansville?  …Riecken said. “I am greatly disappointed that Ivy Tech was not funded in the final budget”?  …Ivy Tech was to provide the largest footprint on the medical school campus with about 1,600 Ivy Tech students would have been served there with that number rising by 2020?

 IS IT TRUE Ivy Tech’s has an impressive graduation rates of 85% in the Surgical Technology program and has a 84.78 percent graduation rate in the Medical Assistant program?  …Ivy Tech has an outstanding 100 percent pass rate for students getting their American Association of Medical Assistants certification?

IS IT TRUE we wonder what USI graduation rates are?

IS IT TRUE  this decision It’s truly insulting to the faculty, students, parents and our community as a whole that Ivy Tech wasn’t included to be part of the IU Medical School? …this entire decision reeks of academic snobbery?

Governor Pence Signs Law Enforcement, Public Safety Bills on Final Day of Session

Indianapolis – On the final day of the legislative session, Governor Mike Pence signed bills regarding law enforcement and public safety.

 

“Indiana should be the worst place in the nation to commit a crime and the best place to get a second chance once you’ve done your time,” said Governor Pence.

 

Among the bills signed by the Governor were:

 

SEA 6 – making it a Class B infraction to possess, purchase, sell, offer to sell or use powdered or crystalline alcohol;

SEA 94 – lengthening the statute of limitations for rape; and

SEA 193 – designating the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy as a criminal justice agency.

 

The Governor also signed various bills related to the Indiana Department of Correction including SEA 173, which allows the agency to establish a specialized vocational program to train minimum security risk offenders in certain trades to help them find employment upon reentering society.

 

Court OKs admission of tweets, reverses criminal gang activity conviction

In a case of first impression regarding the authentication of social media posts, the Indiana Court of Appeals held that the testimony from the defendant’s girlfriend that the Twitter account belonged to her boyfriend, as well as content from that account, sufficiently showed the defendant was the author of its tweets.

Donnell Wilson was convicted of two counts of murder, Class B felony armed robbery and Class D felony conspiracy to commit criminal gang activity after he shot and killed two rival gang members and stole headphones from another person. His murder and robbery sentences were enhanced by a criminal gang sentencing enhancement.

At his trial, the state sought to introduce Wilson’s Twitter posts, to which he objected, saying the state had not laid the proper foundation to identify the account as belonging to him. Wilson’s girlfriend, Pecolla Crawford, testified that the account belonged to him and she often communicated with him through Twitter. The account had pictures posted of Wilson holding guns that match those used in the crimes. He also often referenced his gang affiliations on his Twitter account.

Judge Cale Bradford, citing Palovich v. State, 6 N.E.3d 969 (Ind. Ct. App. 2014), found that Crawford’s testimony coupled with the content on the account served to authenticate that it belonged to Wilson.

Wilson also objected to his being removed from a portion of the trial after he got into an argument with a member of the gallery, shouted profanity and got physical with the bailiffs. He was found in contempt and wasn’t brought back in until he wrote an apology. The COA found the trial court was well within its discretion to remove him from the courtroom.

But the judges did agree that his Class D felony conspiracy to commit criminal gang activity conviction should be reversed because he could not be convicted of that and also receive the criminal gang enhancements on his other charges. The vacating of that conviction reduces Wilson’s sentence by two years to 181 years.

The case is Donnell D. Wilson v. State of Indiana, 45A03-1409-CR-317.

Governor Pence Commends Passage of Balanced Budget Amendment Legislation

Pence: Legislation ensures “constitutional protection for future generations of Hoosiers”

 

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence tonight issued the following statement upon passage of SJR 19, a balanced budget amendment for Indiana’s Constitution.

 

“Tonight, the Indiana General Assembly took a historic step to enshrine fiscal discipline in our state’s political charter. By passing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Indiana Constitution, we will ensure that future state governments spend wisely, live within their means, and protect our children and grandchildren from being burdened by mountains of debt.

 

“Tonight was just step one in the process, and I am truly grateful for the bipartisan support of this important constitutional provision, and I look forward to the day when the Balanced Budget Amendment can be sent to the people of Indiana for approval.

 

“I commend President Pro Tem David Long, Senator Brandt Hershman, Speaker Brian Bosma, and Representative Tim Brown for their careful and diligent work in crafting this constitutional protection for future generations of Hoosiers.”
