The City-County Observer is excited to announce that CITY COUNCILMAN DR. HERBERT DAN ADAMS MD, FACS, ACPE and MBA has been selected an “OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD” WINNER FOR 2015.  Since May, of 2011 Dr. Adams along with Dr. Steven Becker, MD,  the Director and Associate Dean of Indiana School Medicine-Evansville have been quietly working on attracting the IU Medical School to locate to Evansville.  Because of the due diligence of Dr. Becker and Dr. Adams trying to convince our local and State elected officials to support the IU Medical School is now a reality.  Tomorrow we shall profile Dr. Steven Becker, MD  who also has also been selected an “OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD” WINNER FOR 2015 for his work on bringing the IU Medical School to Evansville.

This years awards luncheon will be held at Tropicana-Evansville Walnut rooms A and B. The registration begin at 11:30 am, the event officially starts at 12 noon on October 26, 2015. Last years event was a sellout.

Audubon descendant to give lecture at USI

Professor and art historian Lucy Winters Durkin will present a lecture titled “John James Audubon’s Ornithological Biography: The Intersection of Art and Science” at 7 p.m. Saturday, October 3 in Kleymeyer Hall in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. There will be a reception following the event in the McCutchan Art Center and Pace Galleries.

In this lecture, Durkin examines the literary contributions of her great, great, great grandfather, John James Audubon, best known for his four-volume edition of Birds of America. Durkin will discuss creative and rhetorical strategies in Audubon’s Ornithological Biography, the narrative companion volumes containing information about the birds Audubon painted.

Durkin graduated from Smith College in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in history, and went on to earn her masters in art history at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Durkin has served in a variety of professional positions focusing on the importance of art and its historical impact and context. She has served as a lecturer at Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester in Rochester New York, Genesee Community College in Batavia, New York, and Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York. She is also the co-founder and coordinator of Sight and Sound, an ongoing series of lectures and concert performances by members of the Sound ExChange Project in the Memorial Art Gallery.

About John James Audubon

John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a noted American naturalist, ornithologist and painter, best known for his book, The Birds of America, a giant four-volume work of color plates presenting the greatest documentation of birds produced up to that time. While residing in Henderson, Kentucky, from 1810-1819, Audubon produced a comprehensive collection of detailed drawings of American birds,  culminating in the publication of The Birds of America.

While John James Audubon’s art has received considerable attention by writers over the past 150 years, his Ornithological Biography has received less attention. This multi-volume set contains written description of each species.

TAKING OFF WITH THE THUNDERBOLTS: In their inaugural weekend as a bona-fide NA3HL team franchise, the Evansville ThunderBolts made history on two storied fronts. When they took the ice for their official debut as a fledgling franchise, the ThunderBolts became the first-ever Indiana-based team to operate in the NA3HL. Moreover, the ThunderBolts officially became the only, exclusive elite junior hockey team in the entire State of Indiana. Despite launching the 2015-16 campaign without an on-ice ultimate success, the ‘Bolts performed with great effort, heart, soul and gallantry against a veteran-imbued Point Mallard Ducks squadron bent on Silver Cup aspirations this season. In the process, the newly-minted ThunderBolts endeared themselves to their growing leather-lunged legion of fans showing much premium promise as the infant season unfolds.

MIDWEST DIVISION DELEGATION: The ThunderBolts 2(0-2-0)0, are operating in their 2015-16 maiden voyage season as members of the NA3HL Midwest Division where proximate, geographic rivalries will be accented. Evansville will be competing with such familiar, nearby teams and haunts as the Cincinnati Thunder, Nashville Jr. Predators, Peoria Mustangs and St. Louis Jr. Blues. Also on their schedule are two South Division foes; namely the Atlanta Capitals and the Point Mallard Ducks with the latter club hailing from Decatur, Alabama.

OPENING RECORD REPORT: Evansville completed its initial weekend sustaining back-to-back setbacks at the expense of the high-voltage, high-powered quack-attack of the Point Mallard Ducks. Friday night, on opening night, before a boisterous, vociferous throng in full-throat, the ‘Bolts seemed to simply run out of time in a 5-4 outcome. Though never leading in the contest, GM/Coach Scott Fankhouser’s aggregation nation played with great zeal and gargantuan gusto as on 4-occasions they diminished their deficit to a scant singleton before the master game time piece betrayed them. In the second installment of the opening weekend series, the Ducks asserted their prowess in an 8-2 conquest.

THUNDERBOLTS VS. THUNDER: Evansville’s season-opening and franchise-inaugurating six-game homestand continues this Friday and Saturday nights at Swonder Ice Arena where the ThunderBolts will tangle with the retooled and refurbished Cincinnati Thunder with opening face-off set for 7:30 pm for both contests. JONNY B. GOOD: ThunderBolts left wing Jon Grimm has launched his return to his hometown of Evansville on a high, premium, positive note. Through his team’s first two games, the Newburgh denizen has engineered 4-points on 1-goal, 3-assists. On opening night, Friday night, the 6-0, 181lb, the 19-year-old earned the Penn Station/’Bolts Star of the Game, by producing a individual game-highs of 3-points and +3 rating in his club’s 5-4 setback. On that same night, Grimm wrote Evansville hockey history when he scored the premiering team’s first-ever goal late in the first period at the 19:41 mark.

THE BRANDON BREW: Swift-skating, shifty center Brandon Bornkamp also composed a polished and proficient opening weekend of offensive stylings for the hometown team. Making his junior hockey debut a rather auspicious one, the 2014-15 State of Indiana High School Scoring Champion authored a goal in each of his team’s weekend starts in an overall 3-points production series against the Ducks. Friday night, the Indiana homegrown standout contributed (1-1-2) with an impressive +2 rating before firing a PPG on Saturday night. Last season, the 5-9, 180lb scoring wizard averaged a prolific 2.34 points per game for the Carroll Chargers. In 44-games, Bornkamp amassed an astronomical 103-points on 56-goals, 47-assists.

PUCK BLIZZARD-BARRAGE: The ThunderBolts goaltending tandem of Brian Forness and Adam Conkling were utterly sprouting rubber limbs on demand the past weekend as they were kept under a constant siege from Point Mallard’s high-tech, high-octane attack. In his home debut Friday night, Forness was extraordinary, repelling 41 of 46-shots despite the 5-4 defeat. Then on Saturday night, Indiana product Adam Conkling was pelted and peppered with pucks to the tune of 62-shots on goal and 54-saves in the 8-2 undoing. Conkling was hailed and heralded the Penn Station/ThunderBolts Star of the Game for his enormous efforts.

SPECIAL TEAMS TUNING: The past weekend, the ThunderBolts power play percolated to the tune of 2-11 for proficiency rating of 18.2%; going 1 for the last 9 for 11.1%. Right wing Brett Howard and center Brandon Bornkamp were the power play marksmen with the third member of the ‘Bolts best offensive triumvirate, Jon Grimm essaying assists on both PP strikes. Meanwhile the shorthand band was under severe salvo, surrendering 5- PPGA in 10-advantages afforded Point Mallard. The efficiency rating in this department was 50%.

THE FIRST 6 PERIODS PERFORMA: Through the initial six periods of the campaign, the numerological profile looks like this: in goal-scoring artistry: the first period; opponents 6, ‘Bolts 1; second period; opponents 3, ‘Bolts 1; third period; opponents 4, ‘Bolts 4. FEW FUN FAST FACTS FROM “FIC:” The ThunderBolts were significantly understaffed Saturday night following the one-game, league-imposed suspension to ace of the place defenseman Nate Thormann and the injury sustained by promising first-year left wing Mike Kelley in the aftermath of the first game in the series on Friday night. Local product Bryson Linenburg was not activated for Friday night’s home opening contest but did serve as the understudy in goal for Saturday night’s encore presentation against Point Mallard. Nine players on the ‘Bolts roster are Indiana homegrown. The ‘Bolts are looking for their first lead in this embryonic season. All 22-home games are on weekends; 9-Fri.; 11-Sat.; 2-Sun. matinees. ‘Bolts merchandise is available at the TPH Pro Shop at Swonder. Pocket schedules can be picked up at all Penn Station locations, Swonder Ice Arena and all around the Tri- State area.

Late surge not enough as Eagles fall to Panthers

The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team tried surge in the second half, but lost a 2-1 decision to Drury University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI saw its record fall to 3-2-1 and 2-2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Drury rose to 3-1-2, 2-1-1 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles started fast, but the Panthers were faster as Drury took a 1-0 lead into the intermission on a goal at 10:58. The Panthers held a significant advantage in shots during the opening half, 9-2, while each team had a pair of corner kicks.

Five minutes into the second half, the Panthers quickly doubled its first half advantage to 2-0 with tally at 50:14. USI rallied six minutes later and cut the deficit in half when freshman midfielder Carissa Dyer(Crescent Springs, Kentucky) scored an unassisted goal at 56:33.

Dyer, who recorded her second goal of the season, beat a pair of Drury defenders before placing the ball into the upper right corner of the Panther goal. The goal gives Dyer five points this season (two goals and one assists), good enough for third on USI in scoring through six games.

Overall in the match, Drury outshot USI, 14-8, but the Eagles held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4. USI freshman goalkeeper Emily Hopkins (Greenfield, Indiana) allowed the two goals and made four saves in the match.

The Eagles hit the road next weekend when they travel to the far west of the GLVC to visit Rockhurst University Friday at 5 p.m. and William Jewell College September 27 at noon. USI returns to Strassweg Field on October 2 to host the University of Indianapolis and start a two-match homestand.

The RopeWalk Visiting Writers Masterclass and Reading Series at the University of Southern Indiana is ready for a terrific fall semester with novelist and story writer Liam Callanan visiting campus October 1st and poet Carries Jerrell scheduled for November 5th. All events are free and open to the public – no experience with creative writing necessary!

“Now Open: Starting Strong with Character, Action, and Rhythm in the Cotemporary Short Story” masterclass: 3-4:15 p.m., UC2207

 

With an eye toward crafting the strongest openings possible, Liam Callanan will lead this masterclass on how to gain your audience’s attention in the story’s first paragraphs. The class will look at several examples and close readings in order to figure out what makes them work: how do the characters get introduced, action started, and a rhythm established, all in a story’s opening lines?

Liam Callanan is the author of novels: The Cloud Atlas, an Edgar Award Finalist, and All Saints, a Target Bookmarked Breakout Book, and a new story collection Listen. Callanan also serves in the English Department of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and was previously its chair and coordinator of its Ph.D. program in creative writing.

“Dear Mother, Dear Maker: Writing in the Epistolary Mode” masterclass: 3-4:15 p.m., UC 2207

 

Poet Carrie Jerrell looks to present exactly one idea to this masterclass: you should start writing more letters. The class will briefly discuss the history of epistolary poetry, then turn to its benefits for your writing and look at examples of how cotemporary poets use the mode.

Carrie Jerrell, a graduate of John Hopkins University and Texas Tech University, is the author of the poetry collection After the Revival. She is currently an associate professor at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, where she coordinates the MSU Reading Series and teaches in the MFA program.

Eagles stumble against Drury

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team dropped a GLVC contest to Drury University, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles see their record go to 3-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the GLVC, while the Panthers rise to 2-4-0, 2-2-0 GLVC.

The first goal of the match came in the early minutes of the contest. Drury’s David Cross headed in a corner kick just shy of the four minute mark to provide the 1-0 advantage for the Panthers.

The first half was played evenly, as the Eagles and Panthers tied in corner kicks with two and the Panthers earned six shots to USI’s four.

In the second half, the Panthers gained a two-goal advantage on a penalty kick by Ben Bruce just past the 71st minute. Drury earned the penalty kick after the Eagles were penalized for a handball in the box.

Overall, Drury edged the Eagles in shots 15-14 and corners 5-4.

The Eagles hit the road next weekend to face Rockhurst University at 7:30 pm on Friday night in Kansas City, Missouri before travelling to Liberty, Missouri to face William Jewell College at 2:30 pm on Sunday afternoon.

First Security Bank received the Small Business of the Year award from the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce at their Annual Meeting and Dinner on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015. The Chamber has over 1,700 business memberships and is the second largest chamber of commerce in Indiana.

First Security Bank expanded into the Evansville market in 2008, after the acquisition of Warrick Loan and Savings Company of Boonville, Ind. The first Evansville branch is located at 123 S. Blues Took Over Victory Theatre on Sunday Night!

Sunday night, Victory Theatre continued the weekend of music downtown with The Robert Cray Band. Opening for the five-time Grammy Award Winner was local act Monte and Shelly Skelton. Monte and Shelly brought the blues feel with Monte’s talent of bass, saxophone, clarinet and many more unique instruments that highlighted the soulfulness in Shelly’s voice.

By 7 PM, the crowd was cheering and ready to hear the legendary, Robert Cray. The soulfulness of Cray’s voice and his thrilling talent on guitar had fans in awe as the night went on.

“Victory Theatre’s feel and atmosphere is the perfect setting to bring these intimate performances, such as Blues Hall of Fame artist, Robert Cray,” stated Victory Theatre Executive Director, Scott Schoenike.
