Bolder People, a podcast from the University of Southern Indiana Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) that strives to showcase and explore the dynamic lives of older adults in southwestern Indiana, has released its seventh episode to streaming platforms.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $41 million in Available Grants to Upgrade Stormwater and Sewer Infrastructure

Under President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda, EPA offers grant assistance at no cost to small and financially distressed communities

WASHINGTON – Today, May 9, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the availability of nearly $41 million in funding through the Sewer Overflow and Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grant program to help communities address stormwater and sewer infrastructure needs. Safely managing stormwater is critical to preventing contaminants, including untreated sewage, from polluting waterways. EPA’s grant funding is available to states to support projects in cities and towns that will strengthen their stormwater collection systems to be more resilient against increasingly intense rain events made worse by the climate crisis.

“Our nation’s waterways are vital to healthy communities. They provide sources of drinking water, support farming, power economic opportunity, and give us opportunities to swim and to fish. Keeping our waterways clean and safe is essential, and stormwater runoff is one of the biggest pollution challenges facing our water ecosystems,” said EPA Acting Assistant Administrator for Water Bruno Pigott. “Under President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, EPA is making grant funds available for stormwater solutions. Because it does not have to be paid back, this funding is especially effective in helping disadvantaged communities protect their waterways.”

When rain and floodwaters overrun sewer and stormwater systems, they bypass treatment and transport pollution and sewage directly into creeks, streams, and rivers. These untreated discharges threaten human health, economic prosperity, and ecological function. Stormwater management is a complex challenge for communities across the country. Through changes made by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this grant program will prioritize stormwater infrastructure projects in small and/or financially distressed and disadvantaged communities and prevent cost share requirements from being passed on to these communities.

Additional funding for stormwater and wastewater upgrades is available through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and EPA’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, EPA is providing $11.7 billion to states to upgrade wastewater infrastructure through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. Additionally, the seventh round of EPA’s WIFIA financing is available—with $6.5 billion through WIFIA and $1 billion through SWIFIA. EPA is currently accepting letters of interest for WIFIA and SWIFIA, a loan program exclusively for State infrastructure financing authority borrowers. These programs advance President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, which sets a goal that 40% of the overall benefits of certain federal climate, clean energy, affordable and sustainable housing, and other investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution.

Attorney General Todd Rokita is co-leading a 25-state lawsuit that seeks to overturn an invasive new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule that threatens the reliability of our power grid and will once again jack up utility costs for regular, everyday Hoosiers.

Attorney General Rokita’s latest fight against continued EPA overreach into Hoosiers’ wallets takes aim at the agency’s inefficient new rule that oversteps the federal government’s authority and imposes unrealistic mandates on power plants — all so the Biden administration can appease the powerful political forces behind the climate agenda.

“Hardworking Hoosiers and businesses depend on reliable energy at affordable prices,” Attorney General Rokita said. “They understand these draconian measures are chasing unrealistic goals and will do nothing to actually improve our already good air quality. They also know the importance of protecting the authority of state and local government against power-hungry unelected federal bureaucrats. This lawsuit is all about standing up for Hoosiers on all these counts.”

The wildly inefficient new rule imposes significant restrictions on coal-fired plants, requiring them to capture 90% of carbon emissions using expensive, unproven technology. The rule exceeds the agency’s statutory authority and gives insufficient consideration to important facts, such as cost and grid reliability.

In squaring off against the EPA’s newest confusing and radically inefficient rule, Attorney General Rokita is co-leading this lawsuit with West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

Eagles advance in consolation bracket after 10-inning victory

PEORIA, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana Softball bounced back from a 7-3 loss against Eastern Illinois University at the start of Thursday’s action from the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to keep its season alive with a 10-9 victory over Tennessee Tech University in 10 innings Thursday night.

The day started with Southern Indiana (24-21, 16-11 OVC), the no. 4 seed, taking on top-seeded Eastern Illinois (39-15, 22-5 OVC). The Panthers tallied the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double following a leadoff hit-by-pitch. Southern Indiana answered right away in its next trip to the dish in the top of the second inning, as freshman Kate Satkoski (Lanesville, Indiana) delivered a two-RBI hit up the middle to put USI in front, 2-1.

In the top of the third inning, freshman infielder Sydney Long (Haubstadt, Indiana) got an RBI knock to push the Screaming Eagles ahead 3-1. After USI scored its third run, Eastern Illinois made a pitching change. The Panthers’ OVC Freshman of the Year pitcher Mackenzie Oslanzi was switched out for senior pitcher Olivia Price.

The Panthers took back the momentum in the bottom of the fourth, retaking a 5-3 lead with a home run in the inning, and then added another pair of runs in the sixth to lead 7-3.

Southern Indiana tried to come back in the top of the seventh inning, getting two baserunners on with consecutive one-out singles. However, the USI rally fell short, as the Screaming Eagles suffered their first loss of the tournament and were forced to play an elimination game against 7-seeded Tennessee Tech (23-24, 12-13 OVC) on Thursday evening.

Offensively, USI scored three runs on seven hits against Eastern Illinois. Satkoski went 2-3 with two RBIs, and senior catcher Sammie Kihega (Greenfield, Indiana) also registered a couple of hits with two runs.

Junior pitcher Josie Newman (Indianapolis, Indiana) was dealt the loss. Newman lasted five innings, striking out three and allowing seven runs in the start.

Price moved to 11-9 with the win. Price tossed 4.1 shutout innings in relief of Oslanzi, who went the first 2.2 innings in the no-decision.

In the must-win nightcap against Tennessee Tech, USI got an early boost after Satkoski caught a fly ball and then threw a dart home to get a double play. Southern Indiana responded on the offensive end with a run in the top of the second inning off a productive RBI out from senior outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana).

USI’s early 1-0 advantage did not last long with the Golden Eagles striking for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, including four on a grand slam, to surge ahead 5-1.

The Screaming Eagles were not fazed, posting a five-run inning in the top of the third to cancel out Tennessee Tech’s big second inning. After another RBI hit by Satkoski, going for two bases, a bases-loaded walk brought USI within two, 5-3. With the bases still loaded and after a pitching change by Tennessee Tech, it was Newman in the designated player spot who delivered the next key hit. Newman served a ball into the left-center gap to the fence and cleared the bases with a double to propel Southern Indiana back in front, 6-5.

The offensive scoring continued in the bottom of the third, as Tennessee Tech received a two-out three-RBI triple to retake the lead, 8-6.

Southern Indiana mounted a charge in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Tennessee Tech got out of the jam and maintained a two-run lead. It was only an inning later when USI cashed in. With runners at first and second base, Kihega drove both runners in with a double in the alley and knot the game up at eight in the top of the sixth.

Each side exchanged a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and top of the seventh inning, respectively, to keep the game tied at nine. The contest went on to extra innings.

Neither team could muster a run in the eighth and ninth frames. In the top of the tenth, USI got its go-ahead run. Junior outfielder Kennedy Nalley (Huntingburg, Indiana) reached base on a dropped fly ball by the Golden Eagles. Senior first baseman Lexi Fair (Greenwood, Indiana) followed by driving a ball into the right-center gap, allowing Nalley to score from first base and put USI up for good, 10-9.

Fair recorded two doubles and two RBIs in the game. Satkoski continued her solid day with two hits, a run, and an RBI. Newman tallied two hits and three RBIs, while Kihega notched two RBIs and a run scored. USI posted 10 runs on 11 hits.

USI used all three of its pitchers in the game. Newman was the last one to take the ball in relief, getting the win to go to 21-9 on the year. The junior pitched 7.1 innings in relief with only one unearned run allowed.

The loss went to Tennessee Tech’s freshman reliever Emily York (8-5). York threw the last eight innings for the Golden Eagles.

The Screaming Eagles survived to play another game on Friday. Southern Indiana will take on 3-seed Tennessee State University at 11 a.m. Friday in another elimination game from Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria, Illinois.

Otters drop season opener after lengthy weather delay

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Evansville Otters suffered a 2024 Opening Day loss to the Windy City Thunderbolts on Thursday, May 9 at Ozinga Field. Damage was done early, with the Otters (0-1) plating five runs in the top of the first inning, but late lightning brought the Thunderbolts (1-0) back in the ninth.

Play was delayed an hour and twenty-three minutes due to rain in the Crestwood area.

The first two batters of the game, Patrick Lee and Austin Bost, walked to put runners on first and second. Mike Peabody kept the train moving with an RBI double to right-center field, giving Evansville its first run of the 2024 season.

Jomar Reyes then reached on an error to the shortstop, bringing in another run. Later, Joe Burke notched a two-RBI single through the right side to make it a 4-0 game. The final run of the frame came on a bases-loaded walk from Lee, scoring Mason House.

The offense sputtered throughout the rest of the game, and could not find the scoreboard again.

Zach Smith was tabbed with the start. The right-hander was sharp on the mound, tossing 6.0 innings of one run ball. He surrendered just three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Three relievers came out of the bullpen. Jon Beymer saw just two batters before being taken out due to injury. James Krick gave up one run in the seventh frame, making it a 5-2 game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Leoni De La Cruz toed the rubber. After getting the first man out on one pitch, the lefty specialist allowed bases loaded with two outs, marking the winning run on first.

Ronnie Allen Jr., who came in as a defensive replacement in the top of the frame, smacked a bases-clearing triple to right-center for the walk-off win. On the play, Lee and Peabody collided in the outfield, allowing the ball to roll away.

De La Cruz received the loss and a blown save.

Lee reached base four times, going 1-for-2 with three walks, a run and an RBI. Leading the offense with a pair of knocks was Justin Felix, and Burke tallied two RBIs, leading in that department.

UE BASEBALL TO BATTLE LEAGUE-LEADING INDIANA STATE FRIDAY ON ESPNU

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Two of the top teams in the Missouri Valley Conference will square off this weekend at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Indiana, as the University of Evansville Purple Aces will do battle with the #14 Indiana State Sycamores. The three-game series will begin on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. central time in a contest that can be seen nationwide on ESPNU.

Evansville will bring a 28-20 overall record and 14-7 MVC mark into this weekend’s series. The Purple Aces posted their 19th victory in its last 24 games on Tuesday night with a decisive 10-0 victory over crosstown Southern Indiana. Evansville has won six-straight MVC series in a row entering this weekend’s action.

Indiana State, meanwhile, will bring a 34-10 overall record and 17-4 MVC mark into the series. The Sycamores are nationally-ranked in all five major collegiate baseball polls, ranking as high as #14 in the Perfect Game Top 25. Indiana State will put a 17-series winning streak on the line this weekend, as the Sycamores have not lost a Valley series since getting swept at Southern Illinois in May of 2022.

Graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger will lead the UE offense into this weekend’s series, as he currently paces the Valley with a .392 batting average. Shallenberger has hit safely in each of the last nine games, launching five home runs in UE’s last six contests. He has also reached base safely in 19-straight games entering Friday’s series-opener, and ranks fifth nationally in on-base percentage at .536.

Senior outfielder/designated hitter Kip Fougerousse posted his first multi-home run game of 2024 on Tuesday night to help UE to its 10-0 win over USI. Graduate third baseman Brent Widder and junior outfielder Ty Rumsey also both homered for the second-straight game, as Evansville has been on a power surge lately, hitting a home run in each of the last eight contests.

Indiana State, meanwhile, is led offensively by junior designated hitter Luis Hernandez, who will bring a team-best .371 batting average into the series. Senior third baseman Mike Sears currently paces a potent ISU lineup with 18 home runs, and he is the current MVC Player of the Week after launching three home runs last weekend to help the Sycamores sweep Belmont in a three-game series in Terre Haute.

This weekend’s series will be a rematch of the 2023 MVC Tournament final. Evansville forced the “if necessary” final game last May with a dramatic walk-off grand slam by current graduate first baseman Chase Hug with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a 6-5 victory. The Sycamores would bounce back to win the tournament title with a 6-0 victory later that night. All-time, Indiana State holds a 115-71 advantage in the all-time series over UE.

Friday’s game can be seen nationwide on ESPNU, and streamed on-line via ESPN+. All three games of the series can also be seen live on ESPN+ and heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS. Freshman LHP Kenton Deverman (7-1, 3.70 ERA) will get the start in Friday’s opener for UE, and he is expected to be opposed by Indiana State LHP Jared Spencer (5-0, 3.96 ERA).
