Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy-award-winner, is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while single-handedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the ‘80’s and swing in the ’90’s). Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 18-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra , and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. Brian appeared in the 1987 film, La Bamba, portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran. In 2002, Brian earned the privilege of being one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons,” alongside Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Tom Petty. That same year, Setzer was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2014, SETZER  received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 “Stray Cat” guitar, joining an elite collection of musical instruments at the museum including Dizzy Gillespie’s trumpet and John Coltrane’s saxophone.

Cooper Stadium is one of the top facilities in the MVC

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Capping off a season that saw the University of Evansville softball team finish with one of the top ten turnarounds in the NCAA, the program added yet another improvement to its home venue – Cooper Stadium.

Thanks to the generosity of supporter Jim Domen, a new scoreboard was installed at the stadium this week and is already fully operational.  This adds to an already impressive list of improvements to the venue under head coach Mat Mundell.  Other additions included: new awnings, purple windscreens around the outfield and new padding at the facility.

“It is an exciting day for Aces Softball with the addition of the new scoreboard.  I want to thank Jim Domen for his generous contributions to the softball program,” Mundell said.  “The great thing is that we continue to invest back into our facilities. Last season we were able to add new canopies on Cooper Stadium as well as padding for our on batting cages.  Our goal is clear to have Cooper Stadium be one of the best facilities in the MVC.”

Domen echoed those sentiments and is excited for his contribution to the program.

“I have been following UE athletics for a long time and got involved with the softball program when Gwen (Lewis) was still there.  When Coach Mundell arrived a few years ago, it really spiked my interest and I wanted to go all in and back him up,” Domen said.  “I enjoy supporting the program any way that I can in order to make this a better experience for the student-athletes.  I am very happy to do this project, the scoreboard will be there for a long time.”

This project replaces the old scoreboard, which has been utilized by the program for the last 20 years.  It was at the team’s old softball facility before being moved to Cooper Stadium in 2002.  It has been the main scoreboard at the facility since that time.

OTTERS WIN IN EXTRA INNINGS

0

Evansville emerged victorious in an extra inning nail biter by a score of 2-1 against the Lake Erie Crushers on Wednesday night at Bosse Field. Lake Erie jumped out to an early lead thanks to a solo homerun in the second inning. Josh Allen would bring the game to a tie following a solo shot of his own that was clobbered just to the right of the left-field foul pole. After the homer Evansville starting right-hander, Luc Rennie, cruised through the next 4.1 innings. Rennie finished the solid outing with 5 strikeouts, while only surrendering 6 hits throughout the contest. Showcasing a remarkable relief pitching performance, neither team mustered a single hit through the standard nine inning frames, with the score remaining at 1-1. When the eleventh inning came rolling around, an international tie breaker rule took precedence that brought each team an opportunity to begin the inning with a runner at second base. Once the Crushers failed to score in the top half of the frame, the Otters pounced on the opportunity for victory. Rolando Gomez opened the 11th with a bunt single to put runners at the corners, with zero outs. Succeeding an intentional walk to load the bases, Chris Breen was drilled by a pitch to bring home the winning run and seal an Otter win in the books.

Looking ahead, Evansville looks to win the rubber match of a three game series tomorrow versus the Lake Erie Crushers, with first pitch slated for 6:35 pm CDT. Tickets available at www.evansvilleotters.com or by phone at 812-435-8686 ext. 21.
