Florey hit three home runs at Illinois State

ST. LOUIS – Another stellar week of Missouri Valley Conference action has seen University of Evansville freshman Morgan Florey earn her third MVC Newcomer of the Week award on Monday.

Florey had a memorable week for the Purple Aces both in the circle and at the plate.  Florey finished the week batting .429 with three hits in seven at-bats.  All three hits were home runs as she finished with 7 RBI and a slugging % of 1.714.  She also drew four walks while getting on base 63.6% of the time and scored four runs.

On the pitching side, Florey picked up two wins, going the distance in the Aces’ wins over Illinois State and stands at 11 wins on the season.  She finished with a 3.82 ERA in 14.2 innings of work.  She struck out 13 batters and walked just two.  Florey opened up the weekend series on Saturday, going 2-3 with five runs batted in and two home runs.  Throwing all seven innings, she gave up three earned runs while striking out six.

She was back at it once again on Sunday, throwing another complete game victory while going 1-1 at the plate with her third homer of the weekend.  She drove in two runs, scored twice and walked three times.

Tomorrow, Florey and the Aces are in action at Southern Illinois in a conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

FODOR TRAVEL NAMED HOLIDAY WORLD & SPLASHING SAFARI ONE OF THE 10 Best Water Parks to Visit in 2016

HOLIDAY WORLD & SPLASHING’ SAFARI in Santa Claus, Indiana

Santa Claus, Indiana’s, Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is home to two of the world’s longest water coasters, Mammoth and Wildebeest, a feat no other water park in the country can claim. Mammoth stands out for its unique six-person raft that climbs a seven-story hill before racing down a course of seven drops. Wildebeest is a more traditional new-age water coaster, featuring a winding track of underground tunnels and drops that push the four-person dinghy to speeds upwards of 36 feet per second. Continue your adrenaline rush on Zinga, the park’s eight-story Tornado slide, where a four-person inner tube scales the curved walls of the purple and blue mega-structure.

7th Circuit: Horse racing venture was a business

0

Scott Roberts for www.theindianalawyer.com

An Indiana man who ran a horse racing business had his tax deficiencies for the 2005 and 2006 tax years voided by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals after Judge Richard Posner ripped apart an opinion by the U.S. Tax Court.

Merrill Roberts became interested in horse racing in 1999 and built a horse track on land he owned in Indianapolis. In 2005, he decided to build a bigger horse training facility, but built it in Mooresville after the city of Indianapolis opposed the construction. The U.S. Tax Court found in 2005 and 2006 he had erroneously deducted the expenses of his horse racing business because it was only a hobby during those years. The court assessed tax deficiencies of $89,710 for 2005 and $116,475 for 2006. In 2007, the court declared it a business, and it has been considered a business ever since.

Posner wrote the decision was “untenable; it amounts to saying that a business’ start-up costs are not deductible business expenses – that every business starts as a hobby and becomes a business only when it achieves a certain level of profitability.” Posner said Roberts’ business did not begin in 2007 but 2005, when he decided to build a large training facility.

He pointed out an inconsistency in the ruling when the Tax Court said Roberts did not purchase the Mooresville property to run a business, but said the business didn’t start until it began functioning at the property. “The judge seems not to have understood that the decision to build the facility, and its construction, are also indications of a profit motive.”

The Tax Court based its ruling off a “goofy regulation” Posner wrote, citing 26 C.F.R. Section 1.183-2, Treas. Reg Section 1.183-2: Activity Not Engaged in for Profit Defined.” The regulation says that the court can use another test as long as the court proves the other factors are insufficient.

However, even when using the test, which has nine factors, Roberts’ horse racing venture was a business. All nine factors supported or at least were neutral about his horse racing venture. “It may have been a fun business, but fun doesn’t covert a business to a hobby. If it did, Facebook would be a hobby, Microsoft and Apple would be hobbies, Amazon would be a hobby, etc. ad infinitum,” Posner wrote.

The case is Merrill C. Roberts v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue, 15-3396.

Governor Pence Honors Businesses for Contributions to State’s Economy & Hoosier Workforce

Indianapolis - Today, Governor Mike Pence honored 25 Indiana companies with the Governor’s Century or Half Century Business Award, recognizing each company for its longevity and service to its employees, community and the state.
“As Indiana celebrates its bicentennial, we honor the companies that have helped build a state with a record employment and continued economic growth,” said Governor Pence. “These companies, which have been growing and adding jobs here for at least 50 or 100 years, are an engine of our state’s economy. This year’s speaker series is sponsored by Banterra Bank. The event is free and open to the public.

Boyd is a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana with an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design

Technology and an Associate of Applied Science Electrician Apprenticeship. Boyd was selected as Outstanding Alumna for the Southwest Region in 2008 and the Outstanding Alumna for the State in 2010.

Also in 2010, she was the recipient of the Jefferson Award, a national program that recognizes outstanding community service and public service. The award was established by the American Institute for Public Service, an organization founded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft and Sam Beard in 1972.

Boyd was the recipient of her awards due to her work in a non-traditional career field, the fact that she is a respected small business owner, an active Labor Union member, and a community volunteer. She played a vital role in the successful construction of Holly’s House, a local advocacy center for victims of intimate crimes and domestic violence, donating her time and expertise to organize hundreds of volunteers that worked on the multimillion dollar project. Local Concerns Brings Change To School Health Care

0

As a lawmaker, it is my job and top priority to meet the needs of the communities I serve. The legislative process first starts with conversations with you at places like the grocery store, county fair, town hall meetings, or phone calls and emails made to my office. This process is how one bill recently became a law after some local schools approached policymakers regarding issues with their health care.

Currently, support staff including bus drivers, cafeteria workers and maintenance crews at schools are only allowed to use health-care benefits provided by the school system. Often tailored with teachers and administrative staff in mind, these health-care options can be costly and may not be the best plan to meet the needs of the support staff.

Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 335, which I sponsored, will provide more flexibility to these employees by giving them the opportunity to opt for a health-insurance provider through their specific bargaining units. Many school corps. have multiple bargaining units representing different types of staff. This law will allow staff to opt for health coverage that best suits their needs. Before, schools were required to follow an inflexible, one-size-fits-all approach. Whatever their ultimate health insurance choice, school staff will have the added convenience of automatic paycheck deduction to pay their premiums.

This common-sense measure received unanimous, bipartisan support in both legislative chambers. It was recently signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence and will take effect July 1, 2016.

This was an example of responsive government in action where concerns were shared with local lawmakers and changes were made through the legislative process.
