Eagles fall in straight sets to No. 22 Augustana

University of Southern Indiana Volleyball suffered its second straight setback Friday night as No. 22 Augustana University defeated the Screaming Eagles 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 in the second match of the Augustana Invitational.

USI (4-2) battled the host Vikings to a 7-7 tie early in the first set, but a 10-3 Augustana run broke the stalemate as the Eagles fell behind, 1-0, in the match.

Augustana (6-0) used a 12-3 run in the second frame to break a 9-9 tie en route to the 10-point win; then had an 8-1 rally in the third set to turn a slim one-point lead into a much more comfortable 20-12 cushion.

The Eagles rallied late in the third frame, cutting the Vikings’ lead to 23-19, but that was as close as USI would get as it suffered a six-point loss to end the match.

Freshman outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) had nine kills to lead the Eagles offensively, while senior setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) had three kills, 22 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Junior libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) added 15 digs.

The Eagles return to action Saturday when they take on No. 13 Winona State University at 10 a.m. and Chadron State University at 3:30 p.m.

USI lose tough decision in home opener

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team dominated the second half but lost the opening game of the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 2-1, Friday evening at Central Stadium. USI falls to 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the GLVC, while UMSL goes to 2-1-0, 1-0-0 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles fell behind early in the match, giving up a tally at the 7:57 mark. USI had more chances than UMSL in the opening half, outshooting the Tritons, 4-3. UMSL held the 1-0 lead through halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles dominated but were only able to managed only one goal when freshman forward Eric Ramirez (Vincennes, Indiana) tied the game, 1-1, on a penalty kick at the 53:33 mark. The Triton scored the eventual game-winner at 58:09 on a penalty kick of their own and give the match a 2-1 final.

The second half saw the Eagles outshoot the Tritons, 12-2, and post an advantage in corner kicks, 6-1. USI won the battle of the shots, 16-5, in the match.

The Eagles conclude their first two-match homestand of the fall Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with their annual “Gold Game” when they roll out the welcome mat for Maryville University.

The “Gold Game” features the Eagles in gold jerseys to promote awareness and the search for a cure of pediatric cancers. Admission for Sunday’s USI-Maryville match is free of charge.

Governor Pence, Lt. Governor Holcomb Ask VA Secretary to Reinstate GI Bill Benefits for ITT Technical Institute Student Veterans

State Takes Action To Assist Both Students And Employees Affected By Closure

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today sent a letter to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Robert McDonald to request that the VA fully reinstate the GI Bill benefits of any veteran who has used their benefits at ITT Technical Institute during the current calendar year, and has not yet obtained a degree or credential from the institution. On September 6, ITT Technical Institute permanently closed due to lack of compliance with federal accreditation standards, ultimately displacing nearly 1,000 students and 662 Hoosier employees.

“We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude, and one way we show that is through the post-9/11 GI Bill, which allows these brave men and women to earn an education at the institution of their choice when they return from serving our nation,” said Governor Pence. “Because of the closure of ITT Technical Institute and through no fault of their own, nearly 300 Hoosier servicemen and servicewomen, along with approximately 700 other students, are now prevented from completing their chosen pathway to a career. To assist all students affected, I’ve directed the Commission for Higher Education and the Department of Workforce Development to work together to develop a solution for these displaced students.”

Governor Pence has also directed the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) and the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) to find a way to use available funding in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) for students to take Prior Learning Assessments, in the event that their earned credits won’t transfer to the new institution of their choice.

“The last thing we want to see is a student, who has worked hard and overcome barriers to attend school, face even more hurdles as they work to find a new path to earning a degree in their chosen field,” said Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb. “That is why I fully support Governor Pence’s directive that the state’s lead education and workforce agencies find ways to ensure that these students don’t have to pay out-of-pocket simply to receive the necessary assessment to continue their education.”

“The Commission for Higher Education is committed to the academic and financial welfare of these displaced ITT students,” said Higher Education Commissioner Teresa Lubbers.  “Working in partnership with Indiana’s higher education institutions, DWD and the Governor’s office, we are working to ensure all of these Hoosiers have the opportunity and support needed to finish their education.”

In addition to developing support systems for the students of ITT, DWD has activated their Rapid Response Teams to assist displaced ITT Technical Institute employees in the 5 affected regions of the state.  They are reaching out to employees to connect them with local employment opportunities as well as providing resume assistance, interview workshops and skills assessments.

Vanderburgh County Air Quality Forecast

Air quality forecasts for Evansville and Vanderburgh County are provided as a public service.  They are best estimates of predicted pollution levels that can be used as a guide so people can modify their activities and reduce their exposure to air quality conditions that may affect their health.  The forecasts are routinely made available at least a day in advance, and are posted by 10:30 AM Evansville time on Monday (for Tuesday through Thursday) and Thursday (for Friday through Monday).  When atmospheric conditions are uncertain or favor pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, forecasts are made on a daily basis.

Ozone forecasts are available from mid-April through September 30th.  Fine particulate (PM2.5) forecasts are available year round.

Air Quality Action Days

Ozone Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when maximum ozone readings averaged over a period of eight hours are forecasted to reach 71 parts per billion (ppb), or unhealthy for sensitive groups on the USEPA Air Quality Index scale.

Particulate Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when PM2.5 readings averaged over the period of midnight to midnight are forecasted to reach 35 micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3).

Forecast statistics documenting the reliability of these air quality forecasts are compiled on a monthly, seasonal (May through September for ozone), and an annual basis.  Compilations of these statistics are reported in Vanderburgh County Health Department’s Annual Report and available on request.

Current conditions of OZONE and FINE PARTICULATE MATTER are available in near real-time on the Indiana Department of Environment Management’s website.

2016 UE Athletics Hall of Fame Class Announced

Class will be inducted in January of 2017

The third-ever team along with four student-athletes will comprise the newest addition to the University of Evansville Athletics Hall of Fame.

Included in the class is the 1958-59 Purple Aces men’s basketball team, who won the first-ever national championship in program history.  Kate Chybowski (women’s tennis), Jamie Davison (softball), Willie Glen (baseball) and Terra May (women’s soccer) will also be inducted along with women’s soccer player Kayla Lambert, who was officially part of last year’s class, but will be in attendance for this year’s induction.

The induction ceremony is set to take place on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Ridgway University Center on the UE campus.  The evening event will feature a full dinner and ceremony.  The inductees will also be recognized on the 29th at the men’s basketball game versus Illinois State.  To reserve your seats, click on the registration link above.

Evansville’s first National Championship Men’s Basketball Team will be the third team inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining the 1964-65 undefeated men’s basketball team and the 1985 men’s soccer Final Four squad.  The team went 21-6 over the course of the season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third year of what would be 10-straight trips to the tournament.

Coached by Arad McCutchan, team members included: Hugh Ahlering, Harold Cox, Walter Deal, Larry Erwin, Harold Halbrook, Tom Hamilton, Mel Lurker, Harold Malicoat, Tom Mulherin, Jim Nossett, Ken Reising, Bob Reisinger, P.M. Sanders, Ed Smallwood, Bill Thurneck and Dale Wise.

Kate Chybowski graduated from UE in 2011 with the most singles wins and combined victories in program history.  She picked up 99 singles and 179 overall match triumphs.  The recipient of the 2010 Ida Stieler Award as the department’s top female student-athlete was an All-MVC player on three occasions.  Chybowski earned COSIDA Academic All-District recognition in 2010 while being named the recipient of the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award on two occasions.  She also earned ITA All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades in 2010.

Softball start Jamie Davison is one of just two players in program history to earn three 1st Team All-Conference honors, doing so in 2001, 2003 and 2004.  The 2001 MVC Rookie of the Year finished her Evansville career ranked second in program history with 245 his and second with 124 runs scored.  She also ranks in the top five in RBIs (99), batting average (.350), slugging (.516) and total bases (362).  Her 72 hits in 2001 was the second-most in a single season for UE.

Evansville’s career leader with 22 saves makes his way into the Hall of Fame as Willie Glen made his mark on the program.  Glen also finished with a school record 97 appearances.  He became the first player in MVC history to record at least 20 wins and 20 saves in his career and earned a spot on the MVC All-Centennial Team for his efforts.  A 3-time MVC Scholar-Athlete was named an ABCA All-Region player in 2000 while also garnering All-MVC First Team accolades.  He had an extensive professional career, which saw his jersey retired by the Gary RailCats in 2014.

One of the pioneers of the women’s soccer program was Terra May.  The 2-time MVC Defensive Player of the Year (1996, 1997) led the team to the conference championship in both of those seasons.  The 3rd Team All-Region player in 1997 won the Ida Stieler Award in 1998.  She was named to the MVC All-Centennial Team.

Kayla Lambert, who was voted into the Hall of Fame in 2015, will officially be inducted this year.  She led the women’s soccer program and the Missouri Valley Conference as the leading scorer in the history of both.  She holds the UE records for points (132), goals (50) and assists (30).  The 2008 MVC Player of the Year was the first in program history to earn Academic All-American accolades.  Lambert was also the first Freshman All-American in UE women’s soccer history, earning a spot on the 3rd Team in 2005.

Kohl’s Joining Indiana’s Logistics Industry With New E-Commerce Distribution Center

Plainfield – Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) will begin renovations later this year on a new e-commerce distribution center in Indiana, creating up to 300 new full-time jobs by 2018. The company is the latest addition to Indiana’s thriving logistics sector, which today includes approximately 5,700 businesses across the state.

“As the Crossroads of America, Indiana continues to prove why it is a national logistics leader,” said Governor Mike Pence. “From Kohl’s to the thousands of other logistics operations that are thriving across Indiana, Hoosiers play a crucial role in helping customers receive the goods they need in all corners of the world. With Indiana’s affordable, low-tax environment, our state has added nearly 150,000 new jobs just since 2013, and we’re excited to be adding even more jobs from a national company like Kohl’s.”

The national retailer headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin will purchase, renovate and equip a 937,000-square-foot facility at 9998 All Points Parkway in Plainfield. The company plans to begin renovations in 2016 and operations are expected to begin in late 2017. The new facility will serve as a fulfillment site for Kohls.com purchases and support additional fulfillment capacity required to serve the company’s online customers quickly and efficiently.

Kohl’s currently operates 39 stores throughout Indiana. In addition to the 300 new full-time jobs planned, the company also plans to add 600 new part-time positions with benefits as the facility reaches full capacity. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Kohl’s Department Stores up to $1.2 million in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the company is not eligible to claim incentives. The town of Plainfield approved additional incentives at the request of the Hendricks County Economic Development Partnership.

Indiana is a national logistics leader, earning its status as the Crossroads of America. The state is home to a central U.S. location, more pass-through interstates than any other state, the world’s second-largest FedEx hub and the third most total freight railroads in the nation. The state’s logistics industry has earned an A grade from Conexus Indiana and Ball State University’s Center for Business and Economic Research for the past five years.

Eagles Suffer First Setback, Fall To No. 13 Winona State

University of Southern Indiana Volleyball suffered a 25-14, 25-11, 25-8 setback to No. 13 Winona State University Friday afternoon in its first match of the Augustana Invitational.

The Screaming Eagles struggled offensively as they were limited to a negative .035 attacking percentage for the match.

Winona State (6-0) established control early in the contest as it hit better than .400 early in the first set to grab a commanding 12-2 advantage.

USI grabbed an early lead in the second frame, but an 8-2 Winona State run gave the Warriors a 9-4 lead. The Warriors continued the onslaught later in the stanza, using a 10-3 run to build a 20-8 advantage before concluding the set on a 4-0 spurt.

Winona State, which hit .310 for the match, opened the final frame with a 6-0; then used another 6-0 outburst to forge a commanding 19-5 advantage.

Sophomore libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) and senior setter Quin Shoultz led the Eagles with 23 and 10 digs, respectively.

USI returns to action today at 7 p.m. when it takes on No. 22 Augustana University. The Eagles conclude the Augustana Invitational Saturday with matches against Winona State (10 a.m.) and Chadron State College (3:30 p.m.).
