University of Southern Indiana Volleyball dropped its third straight decision as No. 13 Winona State University handed the Screaming Eagles a 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 setback Saturday morning at the Augustana Invitational.

Winona State (8-0) used fast starts in both the first and second sets to establish control of the contest. The Warriors, who hit .452 in the opener, jumped out to an 8-1 lead in set one as they cruised to the 13-point win. They scored the first seven points of the second set en route to the nine-point win.

The Eagles (4-3) stood toe-to-toe with the Warriors early in the third set as they grabbed a 12-10 lead. Winona State, however, won eight of the next nine rallies to go up 18-13 and take the wind out of USI’s sails.

USI was held to a .071 attacking percentage, while Winona State hit .344 for the match and had seven aces.

Freshman outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) had seven kills to lead USI, while senior middle hitter Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) added six kills. Freshman right side hitter Amanda Jung (Belleville, Illinois) added five kills and a .308 attacking percentage, while junior libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) finished with 11 digs.

The Eagles conclude the Augustana Invitational today at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Chadron State College. USI opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts William Jewell College.

Game five of the Augustana Invitational

University of Southern Indiana Volleyball suffered its second straight setback Friday night as No. 22 Augustana University defeated the Screaming Eagles 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 in the second match of the Augustana Invitational.

USI (4-2) battled the host Vikings to a 7-7 tie early in the first set, but a 10-3 Augustana run broke the stalemate as the Eagles fell behind, 1-0, in the match.

Augustana (6-0) used a 12-3 run in the second frame to break a 9-9 tie en route to the 10-point win; then had an 8-1 rally in the third set to turn a slim one-point lead into a much more comfortable 20-12 cushion.

The Eagles rallied late in the third frame, cutting the Vikings’ lead to 23-19, but that was as close as USI would get as it suffered a six-point loss to end the match.

Freshman outside hitter Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) had nine kills to lead the Eagles offensively, while senior setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) had three kills, 22 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Junior libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) added 15 digs.

The Eagles return to action Saturday when they take on No. 13 Winona State University at 10 a.m. and Chadron State University at 3:30 p.m.

Game four of the Augustana Invitational

The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team dominated the second half but lost the opening game of the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 2-1, Friday evening at Central Stadium. USI falls to 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the GLVC, while UMSL goes to 2-1-0, 1-0-0 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles fell behind early in the match, giving up a tally at the 7:57 mark. USI had more chances than UMSL in the opening half, outshooting the Tritons, 4-3. UMSL held the 1-0 lead through halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles dominated but were only able to managed only one goal when freshman forward Eric Ramirez (Vincennes, Indiana) tied the game, 1-1, on a penalty kick at the 53:33 mark. The Triton scored the eventual game-winner at 58:09 on a penalty kick of their own and give the match a 2-1 final.

The second half saw the Eagles outshoot the Tritons, 12-2, and post an advantage in corner kicks, 6-1. USI won the battle of the shots, 16-5, in the match.

The Eagles conclude their first two-match homestand of the fall Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with their annual “Gold Game” when they roll out the welcome mat for Maryville University.

The “Gold Game” features the Eagles in gold jerseys to promote awareness and the search for a cure of pediatric cancers. Admission for Sunday’s USI-Maryville match is free of charge.
