Aces in top five in Illinois

FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – On a windy and warm day at Flossmoor Country Club, the University of Evansville women’s golf team wrapped up the opening two rounds of the Loyola Fall Invitational.

Evansville finished the day in fifth place out of the eight participating teams with a score of 665.  UE is just three behind 4thplace Chicago State.  Butler leads on the team side with a 644 while Loyola enters the final round just three strokes behind.  Southern Illinois is third, four shots off the lead.

Kayla Katterhenry was the top performer of the day for the Aces.  The senior began the day with an 80 before registering an 81 to finish Monday’s action with a 161.  She is tied for seventh place overall.

Maggie Camp and Madison Chaney finished the day in a tie for 24th place with scores of 169.  Camp’s rounds checked in at an 83 and 86 while Chaney carded scores of 81 and 88.

Giulia Mallmann and Maria Pickens ended the first two rounds tied for 31st.  Mallmann started off with a 92, but lowered her score to an 81 in round two.  Pickens also improved as the day went along, opening with an 89 before notching an 84.

Lexie Sollman and Carly Waggoner were the individuals for the Purple Aces.  Sollman finished the day with scores of 90 and 92 to rank in a tie for 45th with a 182.  Waggoner had identical scores of 94 and is tied for 47th with a 188.

Loyola’s Morgan Brown sits atop the leaderboard with a 155.  She shot the low round of the day in the second round, notching a 75.  Brooke Cusamano of SIU is one behind with a 156.  Butler has two players tied for third with scores of 158.  Katterhenry is six off the lead.

One more round of play is set for Tuesday morning.

USI looks to rebound at home

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field looking to rebound from last weekend’s tough road swing. USI (4-3-0, 1-3-0 GLVC) is slated to host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (3-2-1, 3-1-0 GLVC) Friday at 5 p.m. and Lewis University (4-2-1, 2-1-1 GLVC) Sunday at noon.
Live coverage of USI’s two-match home weekend, including live video and live statistics, can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.

Week 4 Eagle Notes:

Last weekend: The Screaming Eagles were held scoreless on the road trip, falling to Quincy University, 2-0, and to 25th-ranked Truman State University, 3-0.

Scoring goals in 2016: The Eagles have scored 18 goals through five matches this fall, just one short of the 19 scored during the 17 games of the 2015 campaign. Senior forward Gabriella Korte (St. Louis, Missouri) tops the USI scoring leaders with 11 points on a team-high four goals and three assists.

This week’s opponents in the GLVC: While the Eagles were picked to finish 13th in the GLVC this fall, UW-Parkside was forecast to place eighth and Lewis was voted seventh by the league’s head coaches.

USI looks to snap UW-Parkside losing streak: USI, which trails the all-time series with UW-Parkside, 12-9-2, looks to snap a three-match losing streak to the Rangers. The last time USI posted a win over UW-Parkside was in 2013 when the Eagles won at Strassweg Field, 2-1, in overtime.

Eagles look to get back on track versus Lewis: The Eagles will be looking to get back on track versus the Flyers after losing a 1-0 decision last year in Romeoville, Illinois. USI, which leads the all-time series, 13-5-2, had posted a 9-0-1 record versus Lewis since 2005 before losing last year’s match.

HELPING TRUMP ISN’T EASY

HELPING TRUMP ISN’T EASY

Making Sense by Michael Reagan

Donald Trump actually looked like a statesman in Mexico City Wednesday afternoon.

It didn’t matter what he and the president of Mexico talked about.  It didn’t even matter if they made a secret handshake deal to split the cost of building the great Wall of Trump.

For the first time in his long campaign, Trump actually looked presidential. The visual gravitas didn’t last long, though.  Six hours later in Arizona the old Trump was back, reading a speech from the teleprompter and throwing big slabs of U.S. Prime red meat to his hardcore fan base.  He erased all thoughts that he was headed to a kinder, gentler place on immigration, which, unfortunately, remains the signature issue of his campaign.

Not only did he promise to build his wall taller and deeper and stronger, and make Mexico pay for it, but he also promised to get tougher on illegal immigrants in every way.  That’s great. But Trump —- and his campaign —- still don’t get it.  He’s still pounding away at immigration when he should be talking about the economy, Obamacare and making the country safe.

His tough stand on immigration is what won him the Republican primary. It’s what keeps his hardcore base applauding and cheering for him at his rallies.  But he doesn’t have to pander to that base anymore.
He also doesn’t need to be boosting Fox’s ratings every night by appearing with his soulmates Greta, Bill and Sean.

He doesn’t need to please the conservative Fox audience anymore, either, who tune in to see everyone beat up on Hillary. They’re already in his bag of votes.  How hard is this? Trump needs to address all those people out there who are not part of his base —- people who aren’t Republicans but who dislike Hillary enough to vote for him because of issues like the economy or trust.

Speaking to a black audience this weekend and pointing out how the Democrat Party has failed blacks for 50 years is the right idea.  He has to do more of that. Next, I’d like to see him shaking hands at a corner taco stand in L.A. After that, he should show up on CNN and even PBS, if they’ll have him.  He needs to eat away at Hillary’s base. And that means talking about the economy, jobs and lying Hillary’s personal failings, which are huge.

Trump’s campaign staff had a good week.
But calling Hillary a bigot because she takes the black vote for granted was a total waste of time. It’s not going to win Trump votes in November.

When I tried to tell the Trump team that in a tweet this week, the response I got from a campaign operative in Trump Tower was, “Oh, are you on the Hillary Clinton payroll?
That’s the common response from Trumpsters and the campaign’s brain trust. If you say anything critical they say, “You must be on Hillary’s payroll.”

They don’t want my advice, but everything I’ve said about Trump’s campaign has been proven to be true.
I told them not to hire Paul Manafort to run the campaign. But they did —- and then had to fire him.
I told them long ago Trump had to soften his approach to Latinos —- and eventually he did. I think.
I refuse to be a Trump enabler. I’ve decided to be a consultant to him via Twitter or my columns.
But when I criticize Trump’s campaign I get grief from his followers and his campaign people for being a Hillary lover.

When I told my father in 1980 to fire Paul Manafort and the rest of his campaign team because I could see they were losing the Iowa caucuses to George H.W. Bush, did that mean I was a supporter of Jimmy Carter?
No.

There are too many major differences between Trump and my father to count. But one difference is that my father had the sense to listen to me when I gave him good advice.
