UE Head Men’s Basketball Coach Marty Simmons Signs Extension

0

Simmons Is Entering His 10th Season At UE

University of Evansville Director of Athletics Mark Spencer has announced that head men’s basketball coach Marty Simmons has signed a contract extension to remain at his alma mater.

“We are very excited about the significant progress our men’s basketball program has made under Coach Simmons and are thrilled that he will continue to lead the program into the future,” Spencer said. “Marty and his staff have brought tremendous work ethic, passion and energy to the program and the Purple Aces basketball community. These past two seasons were very special totaling 49 wins including a CIT Championship, and we look forward to them taking the next step to the NIT and NCAA tournaments.”

“Marty and his staff have built a great foundation for continued success on the court, in the community and in the graduation of our basketball student-athletes for years to come, and I am excited about the direction and leadership Marty is providing to the program,” Spencer added.

Simmons is entering his 10th year at the helm of the Purple Aces program.  He is coming off of the program’s best season in 27 years as Evansville went 25-9 and advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Game for the second time in program history. He has directed the squad to five postseason appearances and 20 or more wins in three of the last four seasons.

“I appreciate the commitment and support for the men’s basketball program that the UE administration, President Kazee and Mark have shown,” Simmons said. “We are proud of what we have accomplished thus far and are focused on more goals ahead. I’m excited about the players and coaches we have and the improvements we have made over the last few years. We have a program that will strive to be nationally competitive year after year.”

In keeping with University policy, specific terms of the agreement were not released.

UE hosts Drake and UNI this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri Valley Conference play begins for the Purple Aces, who host Drake and UNI on Saturday and Sunday before making the trek out to Wichita State for a Monday evening match.  All three contests will be carried live on The Valley on ESPN3 and will each begin at 7 p.m.

A trip to the Gamecock Invitational completed non-conference action last weekend as the Purple Aces (4-9) had their best weekend of the season.  Following a 3-0 loss to Kennesaw State, UE picked up a 3-2 victory over UL Monroe to wrap up the opening day.  On Saturday, the Aces fell in a hard-fought match against Jacksonville State before finishing the tournament with a solid 3-1 win over Nicholls State.

Junior Cathy Schreiber had her best weekend since returning from injury as she was named to the Gamecock Invitational All-Tournament Team.  Schreiber notched 28 kills in four matches over the weekend, an average of 1.65 per set.  She hit a team-high .328 while posting four solo blocks and five block assists.  In a 3-2 win over UL Monroe on Friday, Schreiber hit .438 with 8 kills in an exciting victory.  The top effort of her comeback in 2016 came versus Jacksonville State as she notched 11 kills and had three block assists.  She hit .308 in the match.  Schreiber wrapped up the weekend with 8 more kills and two solo blocks against Nicholls State.

Freshman Rachel Tam has gotten better each and every week and that culminated in a total of 44 kills, 60 digs and 5 blocks at the Gamecock Invitational.  She started the week with six kills and 14 digs versus Kennesaw State before setting her career mark with a game-high 18 kills and 15 digs in a 3-2 win over UL Monroe.  Tam added 11 kills and a career-best 19 digs against Jacksonville State before completing the weekend with 9 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 win over Nicholls State.

Drake enters MVC action with a 9-5 record, but have fallen in three of their last four matches.  The Bulldogs lost to Weber State by a 3-1 final last time out at the Western Illinois Tournament.  The top defensive team in the Valley has allowed opponents to hit just .161.  Grace Schofield and Kameo Pope ranks second and third in the MVC in service aces.

Currently standing at 9-5 overall and 0-1 in the MVC, the Panthers opened league play on Sept. 16 with a 3-2 home loss to Illinois State in their home tournament.  Since then, the Panthers have swept their last three opponents – Northwestern, Syracuse and North Dakota State.  Heather Hook leads the way in the conference with 11.17 assists per set while Kayla Haneline is fourth in the conference, averaging 3.40 kills per set.

On Monday, the Aces travel out to Wichita State, who enter conference play with a 9-4 mark.  They open MVC action on Friday at Missouri State.  The Shockers are winners of three of their last four matches, including a 3-0 victory over Texas Tech last weekend in San Antonio.  WSU features one of the top hitters in the league as junior Abbie Lehman is second in the MVC, hitting .420.

Reeves earns first career GLVC Runner of the Week award

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Cross Country senior Jessica Reeves (Midland, Michigan) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Runner of the Week after a third place finish at the Spartan Invite last Friday in East Lansing, Michigan.
Reeve’s time of 21 minutes, 36 seconds helped secure a second place finish for the Screaming Eagles to defeat Hillsdale University, currently ranked number-seven in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll. The team finish allowed USI to jump past the Chargers to number-six in the USTFCCCA poll.

It is the first GLVC weekly award of Reeves’ career at USI.

The last USI Women’s Cross Country runner to win the award was junior Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) who won the first GLVC weekly award of 2016.

After two weeks off, USI will return to action October 1 at the Greater Louisville Classic. The women’s 5k and men’s 8k races will begin at 8 a.m. at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

Air Quality – Ozone Alert Extended Effective Dates: September 21-22, 2016

0

Air Quality Forecast:  Please be advised that outdoor Ozone levels may reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for the 8-hour Ozone Standard.

Air Quality Index Ozone 8-hr average
Good (0-50) 0-54 ppb
Moderate (51 – 100) 55-70 ppb
→   Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (101 – 150) 71-85 ppb
Unhealthy (151 – 200) 86-105 ppb
Very Unhealthy (201 – 300) 106-200 ppb
HAZARDOUS (301 – 500+) >200 ppb

The U.S. EPA recommends that sensitive groups such as children, older adults, those with respiratory diseases, and people who are active outdoors limit prolonged outdoor exertion especially between the hours of 12:00 and 7:00 p.m. when the highest Ozone concentrations are most likely to occur.

Within a few hours or days, exposure to higher levels of Ozone can cause lung and throat irritation, shortness of breath, and aggravate respiratory diseases such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis.  For more information about Ozone and your health please go to: http://www.epa.gov/airnow/ozone-c.pdf

To do your share to protect air quality and reduce pollution levels:

  • Conserve energy – turn off lights, reduce air conditioner use, etc.
  • Use Public transit, or limit driving and avoid unnecessary idling and drive-through windows, especially if there are long lines.
  • Postpone refueling your vehicle until after 6:00 p.m.; don’t ‘top-off’ the tank when filling up.
  • Consider using electric or manually operated lawn and garden equipment.   If you use gasoline-powered equipment, try to avoid use between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • Limit the use of cleaning fluids, paint thinners or other materials containing volatile organic compounds (VOC).
  • Postpone painting projects or use low-VOC coatings.
  • OPEN BURNING IS PROHIBITED during an air quality alert.  The use of gas and charcoal grills for cooking is permitted, however delaying until after 6 p.m. is recommended.
