WELLS FARGO IS A BANK, NOT A CENTER FOR POLITICAL ACTIVISM

If Wells Fargo was focused on bank charges and interest rates rather than political hot button issues, perhaps they wouldn’t have had to fire thousands of employees for ripping off customers and be liable for millions in fines.

In a recent press release, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau [CFPB] recounted that Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. will pay “the largest penalty the CFPB has ever imposed,” $185 million, because thousands of Wells Fargo employees “covertly” opened “more than two million deposit and credit card accounts,” transferring funds from consumers’ authorized accounts without their knowledge or consent, often racking up fees or other charges.”

The press release says the employees who engaged in this “widespread illegal practice” were “spurred by sales targets and compensation incentives.” “Spurred” is a little mild, considering that CNN Money reports that a “pressure cooker environment” at Wells Fargo resulted in employees engaging “in all kinds of sordid practices.”

Specifically, approximately 5,300 employees may have opened roughly 1.5 million deposit accounts, transferring funds from consumers’ accounts to temporarily fund the new, unauthorized accounts. The CFPB reports that consumers were “sometimes harmed” from insufficient funds or overdraft charges. But it seems it was a win-win for Wells Fargo for those actions apparently helped the bank meet sales goals and also helped employees earn additional compensation.

Additionally, CFPB says employees applied for “roughly 565,000 credit card accounts that may not have been authorized by consumers, leading to “incurred annual fees, as well as associated finance or interest charges and other fees.” They also issued and activated debit cards and created PIN numbers and fake email addresses to enroll unaware consumers in online-banking services.

All this while Wells Fargo was simultaneously shoving social issues down consumers’ throats, something they’ve done for years.

Last year, in response to an advertisement featuring a lesbian couple, noteworthy Evangelicals like Franklin Graham said they’d had enough and closed out their accounts. Nonetheless, Wells Fargo remained resolute in its activist stance and has the right to do so.

But individuals also have the right to put their money in banks that leave what people do in the bedroom out of the boardroom.

During an interview in 2015 with the San Francisco Business Times, Wells Fargo executive Doug Case said, “…our CEO John Stumpf very frequently will talk about LGBT inclusiveness and, talk about walking the talk…”

Walking the talk? Sure, Wells Fargo repeatedly receives high rankings from the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBT advocacy group and political lobbying organization in the United States. But the bank’s latest scam is just one more in a “string of infractions,” reports USA Today.Wells Fargo “faced or settled four key areas of litigation as of the end of 2015” including FHA insurance claims, Visa and MasterCard interchange fees, mortgage products, and order of posting (overdraft) fees.

So why not try walking the bank talk? Obviously, Wells Fargo has lost its focus. It is easy to do. But when a distraction sidetracks your purpose, something’s got to give. Wells Fargo’s forgotten that a bank is not a social experimentation petri dish. It is a financial institution…a bank. Banks lend and borrow money and accept customers’ deposits and pay interest in return. Then they use those funds to lend to other customers. Pure and simple.

Given that 5,300 employees, not just a handful of bad actors, were fired for what boils down to identity theft for profit, Wells Fargo would be better served serving its purpose, rather than investing time and energy bartering in social and political activism.

UE women’s golf opens Loyola Fall Invitational

Aces in top five in Illinois

 FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – On a windy and warm day at Flossmoor Country Club, the University of Evansville women’s golf team wrapped up the opening two rounds of the Loyola Fall Invitational.

Evansville finished the day in fifth place out of the eight participating teams with a score of 665.  UE is just three behind 4thplace Chicago State.  Butler leads on the team side with a 644 while Loyola enters the final round just three strokes behind.  Southern Illinois is third, four shots off the lead.

Kayla Katterhenry was the top performer of the day for the Aces.  The senior began the day with an 80 before registering an 81 to finish Monday’s action with a 161.  She is tied for seventh place overall.

Maggie Camp and Madison Chaney finished the day in a tie for 24th place with scores of 169.  Camp’s rounds checked in at an 83 and 86 while Chaney carded scores of 81 and 88.

Giulia Mallmann and Maria Pickens ended the first two rounds tied for 31st.  Mallmann started off with a 92, but lowered her score to an 81 in round two.  Pickens also improved as the day went along, opening with an 89 before notching an 84.

Lexie Sollman and Carly Waggoner were the individuals for the Purple Aces.  Sollman finished the day with scores of 90 and 92 to rank in a tie for 45th with a 182.  Waggoner had identical scores of 94 and is tied for 47th with a 188.

Loyola’s Morgan Brown sits atop the leaderboard with a 155.  She shot the low round of the day in the second round, notching a 75.  Brooke Cusamano of SIU is one behind with a 156.  Butler has two players tied for third with scores of 158.  Katterhenry is six off the lead.

One more round of play is set for Tuesday morning.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With the cancellation of Saturday’s doubleheader against Wabash Valley, the University of Evansville softball team has finalized date changes for its final two weekends of fall play.

The doubleheader against Wabash Valley will now take place on Friday, September 30 at 4 and 6 p.m.  Another game has been added on Saturday, October 1 as the Purple Aces welcome Brescia to Cooper Stadium for a single game at noon.

This week, the squad will be in action on Friday evening as USI makes the trip across town for a 7 p.m. contest.

Roscoe is a huge staff/volunteer favorite at the Vanderburgh Humane Society. He’s a male black & white Lab/hound mix. He was transferred in from Evansville Animal Control, so VHS has no background information on him at all. He’s currently healing from an undiagnosed skin condition (it is not mange, but may be some type of allergy.) He also appears to have some hip problems that may require surgery, X-rays, or therapy. IS IT TRUE that Finance Chairman Dan McGinn asked City Council attorney to draft an ordinance that would reduce the Homestead Property Tax Credit from 8 percent to 6 percent for 2017? …the self proclaimed 1st Ward fiscal conservative McGinn also announced he wants to see the Homestead Property Tax Credit depleted by 2 percent every year “until it’s all gone.”?  …we wonder if the homeowners of Evansville are going to allow McGinn,, the Mayor and City Council to take our Homestead Property Tax Credit from us?

IS IT TRUE at the last City Council meeting Finance Chairman Dan McGinn stated that the current budget problems were caused by the spending practices of City Council over the last 12 years? …wasn’t Mr. McGinn a member of the Evansville City Council for 5 out of the last 12 years?  …it looks like by Mr. McGinn’s own admission that he has been a part of the major deficit spending practices of City Council?

IS IT TRUE we searched the 2017 proposed City budget breakdown to see what the  free City/County Employee Health Clinic actually costs the taxpayers?  …we are told by a credible source that this alleged free clinic costs the taxpayers of Vanderburgh County well over a million dollars a year? …it looks like former Mayor Weinzapfel’s prediction that this free clinic would save taxpayers many millions of dollars over the years is totally incorrect?

IS IT TRUE the Vanderburgh County Township trustees are asking for the burial costs to be increased from $2,000 to $3,000 for 2017?  …the Township Trustees claim that the reason for the big increase is that local funeral homes have asked for this big increase this year is to provide burial assistance to those who financially can’t afford to do so?  …we wonder when was the last time our elected officials did an audit on this fund?

IS IT TRUE last week 3rd Ward City Councilwoman Anna Hargis CPA recently contacted former City Councilman John Friend CPA to ask him to explain to her  a few items in the proposed 2017 budget? …Mr. Friend CPA explained to Ms. Hargis that the Employee Health Care costs are going to be catastrophic to the 2017 budget and she went into panic mode? …it’s obvious that the most qualify person on Council that can figure out the extremely complicated information listed in the draft of the proposed 2017 city budget is Anne Hargis CPA?  …we hope that Ms Hargis will come forward with reasonable, creative and obtainable ways to attack the major deficit spending practices of past and present city council?  …its time for Finance Chairman McGinn to stop his meat as approach to cutting the 2017 budget and let Ms. Hargis give her opinions how to address impending budget crisis in a well thought out manner?

At this point in the race, as his poll numbers are surging and Hillary Clinton is dealing with the negative fallout over her health scare and continual lying; only the media can stop Donald Trump from being elected the next President of the United States.

The media will have multiple opportunities in upcoming debates, featuring mostly liberal moderators. In fact, in an interview this week with the Washington Post, Trump questioned the impartiality of CNN’s Anderson Cooper. According to Trump, Anderson is “very biased, very biased. I don’t think he should be a moderator.” Trump also said that Cooper cannot “be fair” and that “CNN is the Clinton News Network.”

CNN is just like the other networks, tilted to the political left. Only Fox News has true ideological balance.

Thus, it is no surprise that Americans have a very dim view of the news media. According to a new Gallup survey, only 32% of Americans have a fair or great deal of faith in the news media to “report the news fully, accurately and fairly.” Among Republicans, it is even worse with only 14% expressing a belief that the media is fair. These are the lowest media ratings in the 44 year history of the Gallup survey, dropping eight points in just one year. In the view of Gallup, these dismal results are “a stunning development for an institution designed to inform the public.”

The problem is that the media does not inform; they mostly try to persuade. For example, Republicans have certainly noticed how horribly the media treats Donald Trump and they obviously do not like what they see. Among Democrats, there is much more support for the news media with 51% expressing faith in their work. Democrats obviously appreciate how the media has covered for Hillary Clinton on so many issues.

In the last week, a video showing Hillary collapsing and being dragged into her van forced the mainstream news media to reluctantly cover Hillary’s health problems. Previously, it was viewed as a major conspiracy theory pursued by suspicious websites and crazy Republicans. The media prefers to focus on Trump controversies and found a new one this week, the President’s birth certificate, to drag back into the spotlight.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Trump was questioned about whether he accepts that Obama was born in Hawaii. Of course, with so many important issues facing the nation, it is amazing that Trump would be asked about an old controversy. It was another media trap set to destroy Donald Trump.

After first refusing to acknowledge the authenticity of the birth certificate, Trump later said that he accepts that Obama was born in the United States. Today, at a media event at his new Washington D.C. hotel, Trump said that “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.”

Today, Trump handled the event masterfully by first introducing military heroes who endorsed his candidacy. He only addressed the birth certificate at the very end of the event, but only after getting the media to cover his powerful endorsements. This is exactly what happened during his highly anticipated immigration speech in Arizona. He used it as an opportunity to show endorsements from “Angel Moms,” parents who suffered the loss of a child due to the criminal actions of an illegal alien.

For the next few days, the media and their favored candidate will try to trumpet the birth certificate issue as another way of calling Trump a racist. Hillary Clinton said that the debate shows “bigotry and bias” and that Trump owes the President “an apology.” These attacks are only the beginning as Hillary and the media will join forces in an attempt to sidetrack Trump’s momentum in the polls.

The good news is that the public is wise to the media’s game. The Gallup poll results show that the American people understand what side the media is on and will discount much of what is reported. Luckily, the mainstream media cannot influence the American public like it once did. There are too many alternative news sources today and, clearly, the American people are too smart to fall for the media’s tricks once again.

The Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed summary judgment in favor of a Hendricks County woman’s insurer on her suit alleging breach of contract after the insurance company declined to cover her son’s auto accident, which occurred after she let her coverage lapse for nonpayment.

Heather Starr-Haller, who had coverage in six-month terms for her 1998 Chevy Blazer, had a history of failing to pay for the coverage from State Farm, which was billed on a monthly basis.

On three occasions in a two-year period, she missed her monthly installment due on her premium, in which State Farm sent her a notice with the amount due and a cancel date. The notices stated that there is no coverage between the date and time of cancellation and the date and time of reinstatement. Whenever she did pay the missed payment, she received a reinstatement notice that again said there was no coverage between the cancellation date and the reinstatement date.

In August 2014, she missed another payment and received another cancellation notice. The cancellation date was Sept. 18. On Oct. 30, she dropped a partial payment off at her State Farm agent’s place of business after business hours. That night, her son was injured in a one-car crash in the Blazer, which was totaled. Starr-Haller sometime thereafter paid the remaining balance, and she claims the policy was reinstated, although it is not supported by the evidence.

She filed a claim with the insurance company, but it denied it on the ground that it had cancelled her coverage and it was not reinstated at the time of the accident. Starr-Haller sued for breach of contract and other claims. The trial court granted State Farm’s motion for summary judgment in December.

Starr-Haller maintained that State Farm waived its right to deny and is estopped from denying her coverage because of the history of reinstating her coverage after she made the payment in full. She claimed because State Farm never refunded her for the time when the insurance had lapsed, it accepted the payments as though she had continuous, uninterrupted coverage.

“State Farm’s actions with respect to the dates that encompassed the October 30 accident were identical to its actions during the three prior occasions in which State Farm had also cancelled Starr-Haller’s coverage. That undisputed evidence plainly shows that State Farm did not intend to relinquish its right to deny Starr-Haller coverage during the period in which those cancellations of coverage had occurred. Likewise, that evidence demonstrates that State Farm’s course of conduct did not knowingly mislead or induce Starr-Haller to believe that she would have retroactive coverage if she did not pay her premium installment when due,” Judge Edward Najam wrote inBradley Starr by Next Friend Heather Starr-Haller and Heather Starr-Haller v. State Farm Automobile Insurance Company and the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, 32A05-1605-PL-976.
