Albion – Emergency Shelter Fire

0
Evansville, IN – Local crisis intervention shelter, Albion Fellows Bacon Center, has experienced an overnight fire that has caused damage within its facility. Shelter residents have been safely relocated and alternate plans for providing services have been enacted. One staff member has been treated for smoke inhalation and is recovering. That staff member is being hailed as acting calmly and heroically in trying to put out the fire, seeking assistance, and evacuating the facility of its residents and residents’ pets who were being sheltered.
The organization had just recently added a sprinkler system during a renovation of the emergency shelter part of the building, with grant funding made available through the Westside Nut Club, the City of Evansville Endowment Fund, and The Brave Heart Foundation. That project had just been completed when the newly installed sprinkler system was called upon last night and successfully prevented the fire from spreading throughout the building.
The staff and board of directors are working diligently to begin restoration efforts so that the shelter might open again soon. In the meantime, Albion Fellows Bacon Center is working with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Holly’s House, and the YWCA Evansville to continue providing survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking with shelter and crisis intervention services.
Albion Fellows Bacon Center continues to provide mobile advocacy and crisis intervention support services 24/7 and is working with partner programs to provide emergency shelter until its own shelter can reopen. Anyone needing help and assistance can call: 812-422-9372, EMAIL: hope@albioncenter.org, or find Albion on social media: Albion Fellows Bacon Center
The community can financially support Albion Fellows Bacon Center through this challenging time by making contributions at www.albionfellowbacon.org or by mailing them to P.O. Box 3164, Evansville, IN 47731. The organization is not able to accept items currently but needs gas and grocery gift cards to assist survivors with basic needs.

AVOID CONGRESS, DIOGENES

AVOID CONGRESS, DIOGENES

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to a Joint Session of Congress. However, one honest member of Congress, Senator Bernie Sanders Independent of Vermont, stated on MSNBC news on June 05, 2024:

“You do not honor a foreign leader by addressing a Joint Session of Congress who is currently engaged in creating the worst humanitarian disaster in the modern history of this country. Obviously as we all know, Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas terrorism and the terrible attack of October 7th. But what it is doing now is going to war against the entire Palestinian people and what we are seeing now is starvation and famine impacting thousands and thousands of children. The architect of that policy is not someone you honor by bringing to the United States Congress, in my view.”

Sanders was born into a working-class Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. Sanders’ mother and father immigrated from Poland. His father’s family were killed in the Holocaust. Bernie attended Hebrew school in New York and had a bar mitzvah in 1954. The common trope of antisemitism for anyone who opposes Zionism lands lamely on Senator Sanders.

Sanders has run for president twice and has served in Congress since 2007. One might wonder how our two current presidential hopefuls with their blind eyes on Israel’s Zionist atrocities have the temerity to continue gainsaying their lack of humanity in the face of Sanders’ courage.

The western world just celebrated the 80th anniversary of D-Day. During the ceremony each speaker concentrated on the critical importance of honoring the WWII veterans by not forgetting that tyranny must be confronted, not appeased. The Zionists in Israel are the contemporaries of the Nazis of Germany. The victims have become the aggressors. As was said repeatedly on June 06, 2024, “Lest we forget” we may repeat history. Especially America must lead by example as Americans did 80 years ago.

When we invite someone to address a Joint Session of Congress, we tell the world such a person is representative of our values and ideals. If anyone should be addressing the world as a beacon of what we hold dear, I suggest Bernie Sanders.

The Centers for Medicaid & Medicaid Services (CMS) has notified the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration that it has approved the agency’s proposed waivers and amendments for launching the Indiana PathWays for Aging program and continuing to provide home and community-based services to eligible Hoosiers across a number of programs, including PathWays, starting July 1, 2024.

The approved waivers include the following 1915(c) home and community-based services waivers: Community Integration and Habilitation Waiver, the Family Supports Waiver, the Health and Wellness Waiver, the Indiana PathWays for Aging Waiver and the Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver. Additionally, CMS has approved via a 1915(b) waiver the transition to managed care for Indiana’s long-term services and supports program under the Indiana PathWays for Aging program.

The approved waivers can be found HERE. The approval comes after two public comment periods in 2023 and early 2024.

The PathWays Waiver is a new waiver, replacing the Aged and Disabled Waiver for individuals aged 60 and over and will be administered by the Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning. The Health and Wellness Waiver is the former Aged and Disabled Waiver. It now serves individuals under age 60 and will be administered by the Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services (DDRS). The Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver is also moving from FSSA’s Division of Aging to DDRS.

The new PathWays Waiver has been approved for five years. The other amended waivers remain on their current CMS-approved timelines.

Some noteworthy changes in the newly approved PathWays, H&W, and TBI home and community-based services waivers include:

  • Adjustments to Structured Family Caregiving including clarifying when an eligible individual can receive skilled respite, permitting foster parents to provide Structured Family Caregiving services, and clarifying how individuals are assigned a tier.
  • Settings in which individuals can receive home and community-based services was clarified.
  • Alignment of expectations, requirements, and service limitations across all waivers.

BASEBALL ACES TO BATTLE #1 TENNESSEE FRIDAY IN NCAA SUPER REGIONAL ROUND

0
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –  The University of Evansville baseball team will open up Knoxville Super Regional Round play of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Aces will take on #1 Tennessee in the first game of the best-of-three Super Regional series.  First-pitch is set for 2 p.m. central time and Friday’s game can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and seen live nationally on ESPN2.
Friday’s game will mark the second time in program history in which UE will face the nation’s top team in the NCAA Tournament.  Evansville also faced #1 Arizona State in its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament game in 1988, a game which the Purple Aces won 1-0 behind Andy Benes’ complete-game shutout.  Now, UE will face a different kind of top overall seed, as Tennessee enters Friday’s match-up leading the country in home runs with 159, while boasting a nation’s best 53-11 overall record.
Evansville will bring a 38-24 overall record into Friday’s Super Regional opener.  The Purple Aces went 3-1 last weekend to win the Greenville (N.C.) Regional, including posting a pair of victories over #16 national seed East Carolina to clinch UE’s first-ever regional title.  Senior DH Kip Fougerousse earned Greenville Regional Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after hitting home runs in all four games to run his season total to a school-record tying 21 home runs.  Fougerousse has homered in six-straight games and in eight out of nine games overall, while Evansville currently ranks second in the NCAA Tournament with 10 post-season home runs.
Tennessee advanced to the Super Regional round by sweeping the Knoxville (TN) Regional with wins over Northern Kentucky (9-3), Indiana (12-6) and Southern Miss (12-3).  The Volunteers launched an NCAA Tournament-best 12 home runs on their way to a three-game regional sweep.  Tennessee and Evansville currently rank as the number one and number two teams in terms of home runs in the NCAA Tournament.
Evansville will turn to freshman LHP Kenton Deverman (9-1, 3.81 ERA) to start Friday’s Super Regional opener.  Deverman beat #16 East Carolina, 4-1, last Friday behind 8.0 solid innings of three-hit baseball.  Tennessee will start graduate LHP Chris Stamos (3-0, 3.60 ERA).  Stamos typically is used in an “opener” situation, as he has not thrown more than 3.1 innings in a contest this season.
The full schedule for the three-game, best-of-three series is as follows:
Friday, June 7:  2 PM central (ESPN2)
Saturday, June 8:  10 AM central (ESPN2)
Sunday, June 9:  5 PM central (If Necessary – ESPNU)
The winner of the Knoxville Super Regional will advance on to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
