GAIL RIECKEN A PERSON OF PRINCIPAL AND PASSION

GAIL RIECKEN A PERSON OF PRINCIPAL AND PASSION

by Bryan Fox

Prominent democratic officials have been scarce these days around Evansville/Vanderburgh County due to the past several election cycles.  Currently, the Democrats hold a slim majority on the City Council, but the Republicans hold a majority of the County Council seats, County Commissioner seats, a majority of the area State Representatives and Senators are Republicans, and the mayor is a Republican.

Even though there have been several well-known names that have aligned themselves with the Democratic party locally over past 30 years, the only recent name that many around the city may be familiar with is the recently retired District 77 State Representative Gail Riecken.

Over the course of a 25 year political career, Riecken became an elected official and/or candidate for local, state, and federal offices.  This would include almost 10 years on the Evansville City Council, a run for congress where she eventually lost, serving three terms as state representative, and being defeated twice while running for mayor.

When Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel was elected mayor, he appointed Riecken as the Director of City Parks and Recreation Department.   While working under Weinzapfel in this department, Riecken says, “I enjoyed the support of the mayor in parks projects, whether ongoing maintenance or the Greenway.  He understood the work of the department was labor intensive and costly to taxpayers.  The public was very concerned what would happen when pools were no longer operational and he supported a community wide pools committee that made recommendations for improvements.”

During her tenure as State Representative-District 77, the Democratic caucus was the minority party for most of her time representing this area in the state house.  Her caucus made state and national headlines when the state house Democrats fled the state to Illinois over opposition to Right to Work legislation the Republicans were attempting to pass.  Rules stipulated that there needed to be 67 house members present to conduct a quorum.  Since 38 house Democrats left the state and there are a total of 100 members, the General Assembly was unable to conduct business.  Reflecting on this time, Riecken says, “We tried to keep bad legislation from happening to working people.  However, there was a lot of backlash, even from some in organized labor, because people just didn’t understand. Workers’ rights kept diminishing with more legislation, including the worst, the law that ended support of competitive wages for local workers that also benefitted local contractors.”

In 2015, Riecken ran for mayor against incumbent Lloyd Winnecke.  She was soundly defeated and the Democrats lost 3 city council seats.  In retrospect, Riecken has no regrets running for mayor.  “I ran because I thought with my conservative spending approach, I would do a better job than the mayor (Winnecke) controlling the budget. I can say I tried, I took a stand.”  Riecken also made reference to the newly developed downtown hotel and IU med school.  “I still hold that it was a bad deal for taxpayers on the hotel and I still don’t know how much taxpayers are over-obligated for the IU medical school. If Ivy Tech were part of the IU project as promised, it would be easier to accept. But it’s not. There was to be 1200 plus students with Ivy Tech included instead of the now, 400 without Ivy Tech. I’ve been told the opportunity for on-site, advanced medical training for the young people of our community is lost.”

So what is Gail Riecken’s greatest accomplishment as a public servant?  “Standing up for working families whether protecting our children, fighting for better wages, safety on the job, improved education for children and adults, opportunity for better jobs, good government, and fair and just treatment for all.”

There you have it; Gail Riecken at the end of a lustrous career.  There were some victories, defeats, accomplishments, and controversies.  Whether you agreed or disagreed with her, Gail Riecken served the community honorably and was respected.

Aces defeat Northern Illinois on Tuesday

Brittany Hay and Morgan Florey were the top performers for the University of Evansville softball team as they defeated Northern Illinois by a final of 4-2 in the home opener on Tuesday at Cooper Stadium.

Hay was a perfect 2-2 from the plate while scoring three runs.  Florey went the distance in the circle, tying her career mark with 14 strikeouts.  She also notched a home run and two RBIs on the offensive side for the Purple Aces (8-12).

“This was a good team win for us.  We played a great game defensively with no errors,” Aces head coach Mat Mundell said.  “Morgan did a great job in the circle while the offensive was able to execute with some good sacrifice hits and timely hitting.”

Northern Illinois (9-10) struck first as a Kayti Grable single gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Florey made sure that lead was short-lived as she hit a long home run to right field in the bottom of the frame.  The homer brought home Hay, who had a 1-out single in the inning.

After NIU tied it up in the top of the third, the Aces took the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning.  Brittany Hay led off with a triple to right-center and came home on a sacrifice fly by Michal Luckett.

Evansville added an insurance run in the fifth when Hay scored her third run of the game on a single by Chandra Parr.  From there, Florey took care of business in the circle.  She allowed just one hit in the final three innings en route to her sixth victory of the season.

Florey gave up two runs on six hits for UE while striking out 14 and walking one batter.  Alex Frenz took the loss for NIU.  She gave up three earned runs in two innings of work.

This weekend, UE will open up Missouri Valley Conference play against Loyola.  A Saturday doubleheader at noon begins the action before a single game on Sunday, which starts at 11 a.m.

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball senior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association All-Midwest Region second team in a vote by the region’s sports information directors.

A first-team All-GLVC honoree, Marcum averaged a career-high 14.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game during her final season in a USI uniform. She was twice named GLVC Player of the Week and became the 16th player in program history reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Marcum finished her career at USI ranked seventh all-time in program history in career steals (170), eighth in three-point field goals made (118), 10th in assists (226) and 12th in scoring (1,134).

The All-Region honor is the first for Marcum and the first for a USI Women’s Basketball player since Anna Hackert earned first-team honors in 2014-15.

Marcum’s efforts this year helped the Screaming Eagles to a 24-5 overall record and a 16-2 mark in GLVC play. USI missed out on an NCAA Division II Tournament berth despite winning the GLVC East Division by three games and having a 3-1 record against teams that advanced to the Midwest Regional.

IS IT TRUE MARCH 15, 2017

25

IS IT TRUE Jacob Murphy was the Vanderburgh County Burdette Park Director for over 2 years?  …guess what  County Commissioners (Cheryl Musgrave (R) and Ben Shoulders (D)) did to him yesterday?  …the answer is they fired him and replace him with County Commissioner Ben Shoulders (D) campaign manager?  …we been told by people in the know that this decision should be considered an act of political patronage?

IS IT TRUE yesterday Vanderburgh County Commissioners Cheryl Musgrave (R) and Ben Shoulders (D) approved the hiring of former Democratic County Commissioner Pat Tuley to be the new Director of Burdette Park less than an hour after informing 28 year old Burdette Park Director Jacob Murphy that he was fired? … the time frame in which the firing of Jacob Murphy happened and the hiring of Pat and his wife Z Tuley may suggests that a backroom political deal may have been cut before the Commission meeting?  …if this is correct it looks like the State Sunshine laws may have been violated?

IS IT TRUE we wonder why the newly vacant position for Burdette Park Director wasn’t publicly advertised in our local paper? …during the election didn’t Commissioners Musgrave and Shoulders campaigns promise open and transparent government?

IS IT TRUE facts are that former Burdette Park Director Jacob Murphy was a very good Director of Burdette Park?  …he reduced his Department budget in 2016 by 11%. or $118,000 dollars?  … Mr. Murphy not only increased park attendance but also introduced some very creative ideas in order to improve Burdette Park?  … recently Mr. Murphy has been holding discussions to create a holiday theme at Burdette Park with a firm from Louisville in hopes that it would create a regional draw to the park and Evansville alike?

IS IT TRUE that Commissioners Musgrave (R) and Shoulders (D) also approved the hiring of Pat Tuley’s wife as part-time Campgrounds Manager for Burdette Park?  …we hope that Commissioners Musgrave and Shoulders read the Vanderburgh County “Nepotism Policy” statement posted in the employee handbook?  …they may be in direct violation of this policy because they officially hired a husband and wife team to run Burdette Park?

IS IT TRUE we find it laughable when County Commissioner Shoulder (D) said “removing Murphy from the post was not reflective of how the park was managed”?  …we wonder what was the real reason why Mr. Shoulders decided to fire Mr. Murphy?  …we have been told by several long time political office holders in both the city and county that County Commissioner Ben Shoulders (D) is quickly establishing the reputation of being less than truthful and somewhat self serving?

IS IT TRUE could a backroom political deal be the real reason for the firing of a young, qualified and hard working non-political county employee?  …the footnote on Jacob Murphy resume can now read “I was fired as Burdette Park Director because of politics and without cause”?

IS IT TRUE many people are now saying that the decision of Commissioners Musgrave and Shoulders to fire Burdette Park Director Jacob Murphy reeks of nepotism and political patronage?

IS IT TRUE tonight members of the local FOP will be talking about conducting a “VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE” against Evansville Chief of Police Billy Bolin? …this meeting will be closed to the media and the public? …we are also told if the FOP membership hold such a vote against Chief Bolin and it passes it could be extremely damaging to his professional reputation and future effectiveness as Police Chief?

FOOTNOTE: Todays “READERS POLL” question is: Do you feel that the decision to fire Burdette Park Director Jacob Murphy reeks of nepotism and political patronage?
