HATFIELD: HOUSE GOP CONTINUES TO STAND AGAINST ELECTION REFORM

1

Indiana House Republicans have taken another stand against lasting election reform by rejecting a proposal from State Rep. Ryan Hatfield (D-Evansville) that would have helped remove politics from drawing new districts for the Indiana General Assembly and our state’s congressional delegation.

House Republicans refused to consider an amendment from Hatfield that would have prohibited the use of political data to draw districts for the Indiana House and Senate and our state’s members of Congress. The proposal, rejected on a party-line vote, was offered to Senate Bill 220.

“This amendment simply said that officials may not use data related to party registrations, voting histories, and election returns in drawing new legislative and congressional districts,” Hatfield said.

“Approval of this proposal would have sent a clear sign that the Indiana General Assembly is in favor of a full, fair and completely impartial election system, rather than a system that leaves the people of Indiana feeling that our elections are rigged,” he added. “Right now, our legislative and congressional districts are drawn through an overtly political  system that maximizes every opportunity for the party in power to maintain its control over state government. This amendment answers Hoosiers’ calls to take politics out of our redistricting process.”

Hatfield and other Indiana House Democrats have made several attempts to raise election reform as an issue worthy of consideration during the 2017 legislative session, only to be rebuffed by House Republicans at every opportunity.

“There was a bill that would have paved the way for an independent, nonpartisan commission to handle redistricting, but the chairman of the House Elections and Apportionment Committee (State Rep. Milo Smith, R-Columbus) refused my call to vote on the bill in committee,” Hatfield noted. “Then his House Republican colleagues rejected attempts by myself and one of my colleagues to keep the idea of an independent commission alive this session.

“The House Republicans may not want to talk about election reform, but the people of Indiana do,” Hatfield said. “I will continue to talk about it in the weeks we have left in this 2017 session.”

FIRST STEP helps you to do just that–assess, intervene, and guide students back to a safe place–back to the FIRST STEP–the place they were before they began to travel down The Path to Violence.

This two-day advanced professional development course gives you 12 new skills to stop a school attack, change students’ lives, as well as to increase your personal growth and enhance your professional worth.

8. Integrate suspended and expelled students safely back into the school

9. Prevent stigmatizing students and alienating parents

10. Positively change the lives of students

11. Enhance your quality of life and raise your school’s total climate

12. Protect your school and yourself against civil liability

FIRST STEP can be used as a stand-alone program or to supplement your existing procedures!

YESTERYEAR: Evansville Red Cross Chapter by Pat Sides

YESTERYEAR: Evansville Red Cross Chapter by Pat Sides

In 1952, the Evansville Red Cross chapter organized an emergency committee of civic leaders to oversee a drive to replenish blood supplies in military hospitals, bringing in a bloodmobile from Indianapolis to visit local industrial plants. The United States was at war with Korea, which prompted a critical shortage in the country’s blood bank. Briggs Indiana Corporation on East Columbia Street, which manufactured automobile bodies for the Chrysler Corporation, was one of the sites visited by the bloodmobile. This image shows Red Cross staff busily preparing Briggs employees to donate their blood, as “Evansville continued to break one record right after another,” according to the local Red Cross chairman.

New Microchip Reader Helps Reunite Missing Dog from Illinois with Owner

New Microchip Reader Helps Reunite Missing Dog from Illinois with Owner
Thanks to newly acquired microchip readers, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office was able to reunite a missing Illinois pet with his family.

Last Saturday evening the Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Darmstadt Road near Highland School upon receiving report of a found dog. A concerned family had found a Great Pyrenees in their yard, but had no way to contact the owner as the dog was not wearing a collar.

Luckily for “Tuscy” (short for Tuscaloosa as we later learned), the Sheriff’s Office recently acquired microchip readers that allow sheriff’s deputies to scan micro-chipped pets and trace the identity of the owner. Not only was Tuscy chipped and his information current, we were able to contact the owner and advise him that we found his dog. When we informed Mr. Aaron O’Daniel that Tuscy was in Evansville, Indiana he was quite puzzled. Mr. O’Daniel explained that he last saw Tuscy around 3:00 PM at his house in Crossville, Illinois (which is nearly a hour away). Mr. O’Daniel had no idea how Tuscy made it to Evansville.

To verify ownership, Mr. O’Daniel described his dog to the deputy. Mr. O’Daniel explained that Tuscy had lived through the tornado that destroyed their home on February 28, 2017, but as a result Tuscy has a scar under his left eye. After confirming the description, Mr. O’Daniel was invited to Evansville to pick up his missing pet.

Deputies transported Tuscy to the Sheriff’s Command Post where he attended roll call and waited for his owner. Once Mr. O’Daniel arrived, Tuscy immediately recognized him. Mr. O’Daniel was very appreciative that Tuscy was found. Everyone wished Tuscy could tell us where he had been all day and how he made his way to Evansville.

Prior to receiving the pet scanners, a deputy who found a missing pet had few options other than checking with nearby neighbors or contacting Animal Control to have the pet placed at their facility. After 10 PM, an Animal Control Officer must be called in to respond to a request for assistance. Sergeant Kerri Blessinger explained, “The ability to quickly identify a pet’s owner saves us time and increases the chances of a pet being returned to his or her rightful owner.”

The pet microchips are tiny transponders that are implanted just under the pet’s skin. About the size of a grain of rice, the microchip is usually placed between the shoulder blades of the animal. Each microchip contains a registration number, which is displayed on the scanner’s LCD screen after being scanned. The Sheriff’s Office can then contact the chip company and obtain the owner information. Although there are several chip companies, the scanner is able to read the registration numbers regardless of the manufacturer.

Pets (canines and felines) that are adopted from area shelters and humane societies are often chipped prior to adoption. Vanderburgh County Animal Control, as well as most rescue centers, will chip your pet for a small fee. After adoption, pet owners can contact the respective chip company and have the pet owner information updated.

Sheriff Dave Wedding stated, “Pets are valuable family members, the loss of which can cause much grief and stress. As a member of the local Animal Cruelty Taskforce, the Sheriff’s Office is excited about this new technology which will increase our ability to keep Vanderburgh County’s pets safe.”

Pet owners must keep chip information current in order to ensure lost pets are successfully reunited. Thanks to the microchip, even after losing his collar Tuscy still made it home safe and sound.

USI’s Hodges named GLVC Player of Week

0

University of Southern Indiana senior catcher Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week for softball in an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.

Hodges hit .579 with a home run and eight RBIs to lead the No. 14 Screaming Eagles to a 5-1 record on the road this past week.

In USI’s doubleheader sweep of Midwest Region foe Trevecca Nazarene University, Hodges became USI’s all-time leader in home runs and RBIs as she finished the day with a solo shot and five runs batted in.

She returned to the plate Friday to go 3-for-3 with an RBI in USI’s game-one victory over Drury University. She was a combined 4-of-8 with a double and two RBIs in USI’s doubleheader split with Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday.

For the week, Hodges posted a .789 slugging percentage and a .636 on-base percentage. She had a hit and at least one RBI in five of USI’s six games.

Hodges, who is earning GLVC Player of the Week for the third time in her career, joins sophomore second basemanClaire Johnson (Pittsboro, Indiana), senior shortstop Lexi Reese (Lebanon, Indiana) and freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (Louisville, Kentucky) in earning a GLVC weekly award this season. It also is the third straight week and fifth time in the last six weeks that a USI Softball player has been recognized as either a GLVC Player of Pitcher of the Week.

USI (24-6, 5-3 GLVC) returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts former GLVC foe Kentucky Wesleyan College in a Midwest Region doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles resume GLVC play Saturday with a noon doubleheader against McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. They travel to Springfield, Illinois Sunday at noon to take on the University of Illinois Springfield in a GLVC doubleheader.
