BREAKING NEWS: The Vanderburgh County Commission as a collective body issued this statement today

5

“We — all commission members — are disappointed to hear of Pat Tuley’s decision to remove his name from consideration as manager of Burdette Park. We will resume our search for the best qualified candidate, and announce that selection at the appropriate time.”

BREAKING NEWS: PAT TULEY WITHDRAWS NAME FOR BURDETTE PARK DIRECTOR’S JOB

5

Dear President Ungethiem,

When Commissioner Musgrave first approached me about this position, and later Commissioner Ungethiem followed up with me about it, this position intrigued me. Throughout this process, I have given much thought about serving as the Manager of Burdette Park. I believed, and still believe, I have the experience and a demonstrated skill set that would provide for a positive contribution to this community and in particular to Burdette Park. For the past several years, I was the Chief Facilities Officer of the 3rd largest public school system in this state. As the chief of facilities, I oversaw nearly 5,000,000 square feet of buildings; approximately 700 acres of grounds, managed approximately 200 people, and oversaw millions of dollars of public funds on an annual basis.

Fact: The county reached out to me about this position. Fact: it was not Commissioner Shoulders who approached me about this position.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve as the Manager of Burdette Park. However, since the appointment, I witnessed the divisiveness of this appointment. As a former county commissioner, I recognize the importance of the county commissioners and the county council working together for the betterment of Vanderburgh County. The appointment is at the point that it has become a distraction to the board. You, the board, are challenged daily with very important issues that must be met in order to move this county forward. You must move on and not let this get in the way of the fine work you are doing on behalf of this community. Please redirect your time and energy into facing these difficult challenges.

Therefore, effectively immediately, I respectfully remove my name from consideration as Manager of Burdette Park. My personal recommendation is for the board to name Gerald “Jerry” Grannan interim manager of Burdette Park until you have completed your search for a new manager. I have full faith and confidence that Mr. Grannan will serve you with distinction in this role.

I was born and grew up in here. I was educated here and worked for 35+ years in the public sector. No matter where I may land in the future, Evansville and Vanderburgh County will always be my “home.” I thank the Board of Commissioners and wish you nothing but the best.

Pat Tuley

EDITORS FOOTNOTE:  This is a developing story.  We are now working on to see if the current Director of Burdette Park Jacob Murphy will remain Director of Burette Park.

IS IT TRUE MARCH 22, 2017

IS IT TRUE That the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville has hired its sixth person to serve as president and CEO in its ten years history?…the new leader of the often embattled organization is named Ellen Horan?…Ms. Horan came to Evansville as a trailing spouse when her spouse took an executive position at Accuride?…Horan most recently was employed as president and CEO of the Greater Reading (Pennsylvania) Chamber of Commerce and Industry until late 2015 when she came to Evansville with her husband?…as a well educated professional and a trailing spouse, we are glad to see her find a position in Evansville that may utilize both her experience and education?

IS IT TRUE we are hearing that a member of the Vanderburgh County Commission has been pushing members of the County Council to join her effort to combined both governmental office into one common area?  …she have been told several times by leadership of the County Council that they aren’t interested in consolidating both offices?  …we have been told that preliminary plans have been drawn for this project? …we also have been told that the cost to combine both county offices could be around $500,000?

IS IT TRUE during the early years, the Veterans Memorial Coliseum was the place where the best entertainment occurred. This included hosting car shows, the Shrine Circus, and Evansville College used to play its basketball games there. Once Roberts Stadium was built in the fifties, the Coliseum lost some of its appeal and it closed in 1969. The Coliseum that was built by the city and was given to Vanderburgh County around this time. During the waning years of not being in use, the Coliseum deteriorated until the Veterans Council of Vanderburgh County took it over and started to renovated the building.  …we want to thank members of the Veterans Council of Vanderburgh County for saving this historic landmark from the wreaking ball?  …we resent that a couple of our elected officials tried to meddle in the daily business activities of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum?  …we are pleased with the way that Veterans Council of Vanderburgh County Commander Mark Acker and his staff are running this facility on behalf of the taxpayers of this community?  …we would like for the person that demanded that Commander Acker hand over the keys to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum to  him please go and hide under a rock?

IS IT TRUE that Forbes Magazine has released it’s list of the 15 fastest growing cities in the United States for the period from July 2014 – July 2015?…there are some cities that are having some explosive population growth and the top two literally grew by more people than are in the City of Evansville in a single year?…Dallas and Houston both in the State of Texas grew by more than 120,000 people in a single year?…back before 1900 Evansville was larger than both Dallas and Houston, neither of which has any physical asset that compares to the Ohio River?…we don’t know what they are putting in the water to have an economy that can attract that many people but the low levels of regulation and high self esteem that Texans seem to have must be responsible for these population explosions?…other cities on the growth list were San Antonio, Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami, Tampa/St. Pete, and Seattle?

IS IT TRUE that this week is the 50th anniversary of the North High School Indiana State Basketball Championship that happened in 1967?…that is a good memory from childhood and it was a time when Evansville was a much more happening place than it is today?…a little known fact is that the Harrison Warriors that year had two players who went on to play for Jacksonville State?…the star of that Jacksonville team was future NBA star Artis Gilmore who led Jacksonville and the two stars from Harrison to the NCAA championship where the lost to John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins?

FOOTNOTE:  Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: Should the Vanderburgh County Council approve the spending of $500,000 to combined both county offices into one business pod?

County Council Approves Human Relations Commission Ordinance

The Vanderburgh County Commission votes on an ordinance that would expand protections against discrimination to the LGBT community. The Human Rights Commission Ordinance brings the county to almost mirror the City of Evansville’s civil rights…

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: LETTER SENT TO PRESIDENT TRUMP

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: LETTER SENT TO PRESIDENT TRUMP

from Rev. Jerry Wirth Evansville IN

Eleven years ago my sister-in-law contracted a fast growing stomach cancer which took her life in a few months.

Five years later her 24 year old daughter was diagnosed with the same cancer. One of her regrets was that her and her fiance had never married. Being a minister, we organized a wedding which preformed for her in the hospital chapel. The next day she passed away.
Last year, her brother contracted the same cancer. It was caught early. He was able to be treated at the Cancer Treatment Center of America.
It was determined that the he cancer was caused by a genetic abnormality. Another brother and sister along with some aunts and cousins were found to have the gene and required preventative gastronomy surgery, but for some their insurance did not permit them to choose the facility or doctor. A 29 year old cousin passed away from post operative problems. I performed her funeral last Saturday.
Recently my wife was diagnosed with a large uterine cyst which, will require a specialist. We are self employed and purchase our insurance off the market place, but was informed us that our insurance would not cover this necessary surgery. We are appealing that decision. My wife literally shook and vomited from the stress and fear of not being covered, and her surgery is being delayed.

While I support the proposed changes to the ACA, there are more changes we need.

Something as important as health insurance should be owned by the insured not one’s employer or government.
The choice of providers should be by the insured not the insurer.
Insurance networks should be eliminated. If an insurance corporation can contract with a health care provider for a reduced charge, then that provider should offer the same savings to every customer.
I have much more to say on this issue, but am limited by characters. The full story is tragic.

Sincerely,
Rev. Jerry Wirth
Evansville IN

IU placed ninth overall at the 2016 NCAA Championships with a score of 180.5 points. The top-10 finish for the Hoosiers at the NCAA Championships is the fourth in the last five years. IU’s 180.5 points are the most for the team since scoring 201 in 2013. IU finished ahead of Stanford (14th) for the first time since 1980 and Auburn (10th) for the first time since 1991.

With the ninth-place finish, the Hoosiers finished as the top Big Ten team at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1978. In total, Indiana earned 28 All-America honors at the 2016 NCAA Championships – the most for the program since 2013.

IU Wins 2017 Big Ten Championship

The Hoosiers went wire-to-wire at the 20117 Big Ten Championships, taking home the league title. Indiana’s Big Ten championship is the 25th in program history and the first for the team since 2006. IU also won four more titles on Saturday, pushing the team’s total to 12 for the week. The dozen league crowns are the most for the team since winning 13 in 1976.
