Kayla Katterhenry Wins MVC Championship

Championship Is First In UE Women’s Golf Program History

Senior Kayla Katterhenry made program history as she became the first women’s golfer in University of Evansville history to win a conference championship as she was the medalist at the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Championship.

Katterhenry finished the final round with a 74 to win the championship by four strokes at Dalhousie Country Club.  She was also named the MVC Golfer of the Year and her win, the 11th of her career, set the all-time conference mark.  Katterhenry is the first-even champion for the women’s golf program and the first UE golfer since 1986 to win the conference championship as Tom Nelson did so on the men’s side in the MCC.

“It was a great day for our program,” Aces head coach Jim Hamilton said.  “Kayla broke the MVC mark for the most tournament wins and was named the Player of the Year on top of winning the tournament.  It is a great way for her to end her career.”

Her total for the tournament finished out at 218, just two over par over the course of three rounds.  She registered even rounds of 72 in each of the opening two days.  The performance comes one year after finishing the event as the runner-up, just one stroke off of the win.

“I cannot imagine a better way to finish up my career.  It was great to have all of the girls out there watching me over the last few holes and cheering me on,” Katterhenry said.  “I had a little extra determination to come out on top this year after losing by one last year.  It pushed me a lot harder to focus.  I knew I was good enough and it was just my turn.”

Second on the team was Maria Pickens, who tied for 37th place.  She carded an 82 on Tuesday to finish with a total of 247 over 54 holes.  Giulia Mallmann was third for the Aces.  She had her lowest round of the tournament in the final round, posting an 80, to complete play with a 251.

Evansville’s second senior – Maggie Camp – played her final collegiate round on Tuesday, notching an 81.  Her total of 253 was good for a 44thplace finish.  Madison Chaney wrapped up the third round with an 89, carding a total of 264 in the event.

UE came home in 9th place on the team list with a 969.  They finished 19 shots ahead of 10th.  Missouri State was the top team finisher with a score of 913, besting Wichita State by 20 strokes.

UE To Face SIU In Midweek Doubleheader

Already off to its best conference start in 15 years, the University of Evansville softball team looks for more as it faces Southern Illinois in a Wednesday doubleheader at Cooper Stadium.

Game one is set for a 3 p.m. start with the second to follow just after 5 p.m.

Evansville made it 5 out of 6 with another MVC road series win over the weekend at Missouri State.  After dropping game one, the Aces were able to take the last two games to win the series.  Ashleigh Downing allowed one run on four hits in game two, a 3-1 win, before Morgan Florey got the job done in the finale.

Chandra Parr batted an unbelievable .800 in the series, notching 8 hits in 10 at-bats, including a pair of doubles.  Brittany Hay and Morgan Lambert also hit home runs in the series.  It was a huge win for the program as the Aces had lost 11 of the last 12 series versus MSU.

Just minutes after the Bears took the series opener over the weekend, Ashleigh Downing stepped in the circle and had her best outing while helping the Aces tie the series.  The redshirt sophomore allowed one run on four hits as UE picked up a 3-1 win.  Downing has been extremely effective in league games, accumulating a 2.66 ERA while going 2-2.  She has also held Valley squads to an impressive .206 batting average.  Over her last three conference starts, Downing has tossed 19.0 innings, allowing just four earned runs over that span.

Morgan Florey was back in the circle in the Drake series and quickly returned to form, throwing all seven innings in the series opener on her way to an 8-2 win. She struck out 8 while giving up one earned run on three hits.  Florey has gone the distance in 10 of her last 12 outings while her ERA of 1.96 puts her third in the MVC.  She had a pair of huge games against Missouri State.  In the opener, a tough 2-1 defeat, she gave up two runs on five hits.  She came back in the finale with another complete game effort, allowing three earned runs as the Aces took the series with a 6-4 win.

Southern Illinois comes to town with a 22-20 mark while tied with the Purple Aces in league play at 9-6.  Over the weekend, they dropped two out of three contests at Loyola.  Shaye Harre leads the offense with a .330 average along with 13 doubles.  Merrie Anne Patterson has the top power numbers, checking in with 31 RBI.

Evansville To Host 2021 NCAA DI Cross Country Regional

The City of Evansville has been selected to host the 2021 NCAA Division I Great Lakes Cross Country Regional at Angel Mounds Cross Country Course in an announcement today by the NCAA.

Set for November 12, 2021, the regional will bring well over 400 student-athletes to town along with Division I college programs from all over the Midwest.

All you have to do is dream it, stay with it and eventually it will happen,” Purple Aces head cross country coach Don Walters said.  “We have a great facility and it will be great for the city.  That is a lot of hotel rooms and meals that we will be bringing in to put this event on.  We had to have the course to make it happen and we are very excited that our efforts have paid off.  Once we get it here, we hope to keep it here for a long time.”

The bid for the tournament was a joint effort between the University of Evansville and the Evansville Sports Corporation.  Officially formed in 2010, the Evansville Sports Corporation has been instrumental in bringing major sporting events to the region, which creates an economic impact to the region.  Other national and regional events include the 2012-2014 PGA Tour’s Web.com Tour; the 2012 and 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament; and the 2013, 2014, 2016 GLVC Basketball Tournaments.

“We are very excited to partner with the Evansville Sports Corporation for what is going to be a great event,” UE Director of Athletics Mark Spencer said.  “This is an opportunity for us to showcase our city and add to its vast sports history.”

Officially opened in 2014, the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course was designed by Coach Walters and is one of the top facilities in the region.  The facility was the site of the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Championships, regular-season meets hosted by UE and numerous high school and NCAA Division II events.

In coordination with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Albion Fellows Bacon Center is hosting our 20th Annual Take Back the Night Event on Thursday, April 27th at 6:30 p.m. at Tropicana Events Plaza.  The event’s purpose is for advocates, survivors, and supporters throughout our community to take a stand against sexual violence.  The event will include a march, a candlelight vigil honoring survivors, a survivor testimonial, and a speak out for attendees.  This year’s featured survivor is Holly K. Dunn Pendleton, the only known survivor of the Railroad Serial Killer.  Holly will share her story and discuss her lifelong process of healing emotionally.

Every 98 seconds an American is sexually assaulted.  During 2016, Albion Fellows Bacon Center served 687 individuals impacted by sexual violence.  This was an increase of 105 individuals in comparison to 2015.  These numbers establish the need for a call to action to raise community awareness about sexual assault.  Community awareness is vital to ending sexual violence.  We must change how our society views sexual violence. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a chance for our community to come together to make a change.  Join us to Take Back the Night and get involved in the movement to end sexual violence.

Rep. Messer Introduces Legislation to Ensure Election Integrity

0

WASHINGTON (Monday, April 17, 2017) — Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) has introduced legislation to help ensure integrity in federal elections.

The Election Integrity Act of 2017, H.R. 2090, would require voters to present a valid, government-issued photo ID in order to vote in federal elections beginning in 2020.  If an individual is unable to pay the cost of obtaining a government-issued photo ID, H.R. 2090 requires states to provide the individual with a valid photo ID free of charge.

H.R. 2090 is modeled after Indiana’s voter identification law enacted in 2005 and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008. Messer helped advance Indiana’s voter identification law while serving in the Indiana General Assembly.

According to the Congressional Research Service, Indiana is one of 18 states that currently requires a photo ID for in-person voting. Eighteen other states and the District of Columbia do not require a voter to provide any ID to vote.

“Many Hoosiers are surprised to know voters in some states don’t have to show any form of identification to vote in national elections,” Messer said. “This legislation is a common-sense fix to provide consistency in voter ID laws, uphold the integrity of our federal elections and improve voter confidence in the process. It also ensures voters who genuinely can’t afford a photo ID can obtain one without charge to them.”

Under Messer’s bill, if an individual does not present a photo ID at the time they are voting, they may cast a provisional ballot and present their ID within 10 days.

States like Indiana that already have similar photo ID laws in effect can be exempted from the law.

Junior led UE to a 7-0 win over Missouri State

  1. ST.LOUIS – Junior Chieko Yamada helped the University of Evansville women’s tennis team to a 7-0 win over Missouri State on Friday and was honored today as the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

“This is really well-deserved.  Chieko has taken on the top player from every team we have played all season; even though she started out the season with some really tough matches, she has come back really strong over the last two months.  She has taken on the best players the MVC has to offer and has beaten most of them.”

Yamada helped the UE women’s tennis team end its home schedule in style, leading her team to a 7-0 win over Missouri State.  At top doubles, she teamed up with Theodora Soldatou to defeat Fati Khamissi and Ekaterina Donetskova by a 6-1 final.

She also got the job done in a dominating effort at #1 singles, earning the win over Alye Darter, 6-2, 6-1.

This weekend, the Purple Aces wrap up the regular season with matches at Drake and UNI.
