Evansville To Host 2021 NCAA DI Cross Country Regional

The City of Evansville has been selected to host the 2021 NCAA Division I Great Lakes Cross Country Regional at Angel Mounds Cross Country Course in an announcement today by the NCAA.

Set for November 12, 2021, the regional will bring well over 400 student-athletes to town along with Division I college programs from all over the Midwest.

All you have to do is dream it, stay with it and eventually it will happen,” Purple Aces head cross country coach Don Walters said.  “We have a great facility and it will be great for the city.  That is a lot of hotel rooms and meals that we will be bringing in to put this event on.  We had to have the course to make it happen and we are very excited that our efforts have paid off.  Once we get it here, we hope to keep it here for a long time.”

The bid for the tournament was a joint effort between the University of Evansville and the Evansville Sports Corporation.  Officially formed in 2010, the Evansville Sports Corporation has been instrumental in bringing major sporting events to the region, which creates an economic impact to the region.  Other national and regional events include the 2012-2014 PGA Tour’s Web.com Tour; the 2012 and 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament; and the 2013, 2014, 2016 GLVC Basketball Tournaments.

“We are very excited to partner with the Evansville Sports Corporation for what is going to be a great event,” UE Director of Athletics Mark Spencer said.  “This is an opportunity for us to showcase our city and add to its vast sports history.”

Officially opened in 2014, the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course was designed by Coach Walters and is one of the top facilities in the region.  The facility was the site of the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Championships, regular-season meets hosted by UE and numerous high school and NCAA Division II events.
