Evansville To Host 2021 NCAA DI Cross Country Regional

The City of Evansville has been selected to host the 2021 NCAA Division I Great Lakes Cross Country Regional at Angel Mounds Cross Country Course in an announcement today by the NCAA.

Set for November 12, 2021, the regional will bring well over 400 student-athletes to town along with Division I college programs from all over the Midwest.

All you have to do is dream it, stay with it and eventually it will happen,” Purple Aces head cross country coach Don Walters said.  “We have a great facility and it will be great for the city.  That is a lot of hotel rooms and meals that we will be bringing in to put this event on.  We had to have the course to make it happen and we are very excited that our efforts have paid off.  Once we get it here, we hope to keep it here for a long time.”

The bid for the tournament was a joint effort between the University of Evansville and the Evansville Sports Corporation.  Officially formed in 2010, the Evansville Sports Corporation has been instrumental in bringing major sporting events to the region, which creates an economic impact to the region.  Other national and regional events include the 2012-2014 PGA Tour’s Web.com Tour; the 2012 and 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament; and the 2013, 2014, 2016 GLVC Basketball Tournaments.

“We are very excited to partner with the Evansville Sports Corporation for what is going to be a great event,” UE Director of Athletics Mark Spencer said.  “This is an opportunity for us to showcase our city and add to its vast sports history.”

Officially opened in 2014, the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course was designed by Coach Walters and is one of the top facilities in the region.  The facility was the site of the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Championships, regular-season meets hosted by UE and numerous high school and NCAA Division II events.

Take Back the Night

In coordination with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Albion Fellows Bacon Center is hosting our 20th Annual Take Back the Night Event on Thursday, April 27th at 6:30 p.m. at Tropicana Events Plaza.  The event’s purpose is for advocates, survivors, and supporters throughout our community to take a stand against sexual violence.  The event will include a march, a candlelight vigil honoring survivors, a survivor testimonial, and a speak out for attendees.  This year’s featured survivor is Holly K. Dunn Pendleton, the only known survivor of the Railroad Serial Killer.  Holly will share her story and discuss her lifelong process of healing emotionally.

Every 98 seconds an American is sexually assaulted.  During 2016, Albion Fellows Bacon Center served 687 individuals impacted by sexual violence.  This was an increase of 105 individuals in comparison to 2015.  These numbers establish the need for a call to action to raise community awareness about sexual assault.  Community awareness is vital to ending sexual violence.  We must change how our society views sexual violence. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a chance for our community to come together to make a change.  Join us to Take Back the Night and get involved in the movement to end sexual violence.

Rep. Messer Introduces Legislation to Ensure Election Integrity

0

WASHINGTON (Monday, April 17, 2017) — Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) has introduced legislation to help ensure integrity in federal elections.

The Election Integrity Act of 2017, H.R. 2090, would require voters to present a valid, government-issued photo ID in order to vote in federal elections beginning in 2020.  If an individual is unable to pay the cost of obtaining a government-issued photo ID, H.R. 2090 requires states to provide the individual with a valid photo ID free of charge.

H.R. 2090 is modeled after Indiana’s voter identification law enacted in 2005 and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008. Messer helped advance Indiana’s voter identification law while serving in the Indiana General Assembly.

According to the Congressional Research Service, Indiana is one of 18 states that currently requires a photo ID for in-person voting. Eighteen other states and the District of Columbia do not require a voter to provide any ID to vote.

“Many Hoosiers are surprised to know voters in some states don’t have to show any form of identification to vote in national elections,” Messer said. “This legislation is a common-sense fix to provide consistency in voter ID laws, uphold the integrity of our federal elections and improve voter confidence in the process. It also ensures voters who genuinely can’t afford a photo ID can obtain one without charge to them.”

Under Messer’s bill, if an individual does not present a photo ID at the time they are voting, they may cast a provisional ballot and present their ID within 10 days.

States like Indiana that already have similar photo ID laws in effect can be exempted from the law.

Junior led UE to a 7-0 win over Missouri State

  1. ST.LOUIS – Junior Chieko Yamada helped the University of Evansville women’s tennis team to a 7-0 win over Missouri State on Friday and was honored today as the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

“This is really well-deserved.  Chieko has taken on the top player from every team we have played all season; even though she started out the season with some really tough matches, she has come back really strong over the last two months.  She has taken on the best players the MVC has to offer and has beaten most of them.”

Yamada helped the UE women’s tennis team end its home schedule in style, leading her team to a 7-0 win over Missouri State.  At top doubles, she teamed up with Theodora Soldatou to defeat Fati Khamissi and Ekaterina Donetskova by a 6-1 final.

She also got the job done in a dominating effort at #1 singles, earning the win over Alye Darter, 6-2, 6-1.

This weekend, the Purple Aces wrap up the regular season with matches at Drake and UNI.

0

University of Evansville head men’s basketball coach Marty Simmons has announced the signing of Marty Hill to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Purple Aces next season.

Hill heads to Evansville from Northeast Community College in Nebraska.  The 6-5 guard is a native of Champlin, MN where he played at Champlin Park High School.

“Marty is a great young man with high character and great skill that will be a great addition to our program,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said.  “He is a long, athletic and explosive player who will bring a great deal of versatility to us.”

Last season at Northeast CC, Hill scored 14.8 points per game while recording 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists.  He brings a solid shot from outside, shooting 42.7% from 3-point range.

“He is a gym rat who really wants to be coached as much as he can; he fits into our culture very well,” Simmons added.

GOP Chairman Wayne Parke Calls For MUSGRAVE To Resign?

1

Earlier this afternoon we learned that Vanderburgh County GOP party Chairman Wayne Parke demanded that County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave resign her position.

In an e-mail statement he sent to Commissioner Musgrave Mr. Parke stated “that he doesn’t believe that Commissioner Musgrave is performing her County Commissioner responsibilities in the best interest of the Vanderburgh County citizens”  He went on to add that, ” Vanderburgh County needs people in office that unite-not a divider who has their own personal agenda.”

He concluded that in his judgement,  Mrs. Musgrave has lost her credibility and trustworthiness to effectively serve as a County Commissioner.”

This is a developing story.

FOOTNOTE: We just posted ‘Readers Poll” question: Do you feel that County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave should heed GOP Chairman Wayne Parke call for her to resign?Â
