Vectren Reminds Hoosiers To Consider Location Of Utility Lines When Digging, Planting Trees
 Evansville, Ind.  – With the arrival of spring and April being National Safe Digging month, Vectren is reminding Hoosiers who are planning to dig in the yard, conduct construction or engage in any other earth-moving activity, to please call Indiana 811 at least two full working days in advance. By calling 811, residents can have underground utility lines in the work area located and identified at no cost.
“Home improvement projects such as landscaping or installing a fence often bring an increase in accidental and potentially dangerous encounters with underground facilities,†said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana – South. “We urge everyone planning these excavation activities to call 811 at least two full working days before beginning a project. It’s a simple call that can help avoid serious accidents and a significant financial burden associated with repairing the damaged lines.â€
Locating underground facilities prior to excavation is mandated under Indiana law. If a resident fails to notify Indiana 811, proceeds with an unmarked dig and strikes an underground facility, he or she will be responsible for the damages and costs to repair in addition to fines up to $10,000.
Likewise, customers who are planting new trees or shrubs this spring should give careful consideration to the tree’s growth characteristics to avoid future problems with nearby power lines and underground facilities. Gas emergency response
In the event a gas line has been struck or ruptured outside of a home or business, residents are reminded of the following:
·        Leave the area of the gas leak immediately, as well as areas where the odor of gas is noticeable.
·        Do not attempt to re-start or move powered equipment.
·        Call Vectren at 1-800-227-1376 from somewhere other than the location of the gas leak. The party responsible for the damage to the gas line should also call 911 and report the incident to police and/or fire officials and the state’s 811 center.
·        Remain in a safe area until emergency personnel arrive and do not enter the home/business or neighboring premises.
Natural gas contains an odorant called mercaptan that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur. In the event a gas leak is suspected inside of a home or business, residents are reminded of the following:
·        Leave the home or business of the gas leak immediately, as well as areas where the odor of gas is noticeable.
·        Do not use the phone, cell phone, or text anyone while in the building or who may be in the building. If you notice the leak while talking on the phone, do not hang up.
·        Do not turn any lights, appliances or any electrical sources on or off.
·        Do not light matches.
·        Do not open or close windows.
·        Do not start a vehicle if it’s parked in a garage that’s attached to the home/business of the suspected leak nor utilize an automatic garage door opener upon exiting.
·        The activities listed above could trigger an ignition if gas has significantly accumulated.
·        Call Vectren at 1-800-227-1376 from somewhere other than the location of the gas leak.
·        Remain in a safe area until emergency personnel arrive and do not re-enter the premises.
Please note: There is no charge to the customer for calling Vectren to inspect a potential gas leak. Vectren will respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Recently, a letter was published in the local newspaper stating that I’m not available to listen to my constituents.
I’m made aware of every phone call, email and letter I receive. As a public servant, I depend on feedback from the citizens living in House District 75. I value input from those who are impacted by the policies being considered. In fact, many of the laws passed in Indiana are the result of constituents reaching out to their representative.
Throughout the legislative session, which begins in January every year, I hold local town hall meetings every month. Town halls occurring in my district are my top priority, but I do like to attend town halls in the surrounding counties. So far I have had two town halls in Vanderburgh County and town halls in Evansville, Newburgh, Booneville and Rockport. I was scheduled to attend a town hall in Pike County, but unfortunately was unable to attend due to a death in my family.

In addition, I send regular legislative mailings to each household in the district, including a survey asking for voters to weigh in on issues facing the state, and weekly email updates to those who want to remain engaged and informed. These email updates allow constituents to respond directly to me, as well.
Online at iga.in.gov, every legislative committee hearing and session proceeding is streamed live. Vote tallies, reports and calendars are also available, which reflects our dedication to transparency.

Governor Signs Local Lawmakers’ Bill Fighting Cervical Cancer
Gov. Eric Holcomb today signed into law State Reps. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) and Wendy McNamara’s (R-Evansville) bill to reduce the number of cervical cancer deaths in Indiana.
According to the Indiana Cancer Consortium, approximately 250 new cervical cancer cases and 86 cervical cancer-related deaths occur annually among women in Indiana. House Enrolled Act 1278 requires the Indiana State Department of Health to develop a statewide strategic plan to decrease Indiana’s cervical cancer mortality rate. The state would work to identify barriers to cervical cancer prevention, screening and treatment, develop public and private partnerships to increase cervical cancer awareness and recommend actions to reduce the number of Hoosier deaths associated with the disease.
“It is imperative we take the necessary steps to reduce the amount of women who are diagnosed with cervical cancer in Indiana,†McNamara said. “Raising awareness about this very preventable disease will help inform women and avoid unnecessary deaths as a result of cervical cancer.â€
The new law requires ISDH to submit a report outlining their plan to the governor and General Assembly by Dec. 31, 2018.
“Prevention and early detection are key to successful treatment of cervical cancer,†Sullivan said. “We will be creating a plan, with the help of ISDH and the medical community, to educate women in Indiana about the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer, along with raising awareness about prevention.â€
Men’s Golf 21st at Purgatory Regional
he University of Southern Indiana men’s golf team concluded its regular season as they placed 21st out of 29 teams at the Purgatory Regional #4 at Purgatory Golf Club after the second round was canceled due to weather.
USI was able to complete its second round, but the second wave of teams did not finish, leaving the first round as final results. In that round, the Screaming Eagles shot a 26-over 314.
The Eagles faced tough competition, as senior Grant Saylor (Newburgh, Indiana) led the Eagles with a four-over 76 to tie for 40th.  Two strokes behind Saylor was junior Preston Van Winkle (Santa Claus, Indiana), as he finished tied for 74th with a six-over 78. Freshman Trevis Bell (Madisonville, Kentucky) tied for 93rd with a seven-over 79.
The Eagles will next compete at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship April 23-25 at River Cut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri.

Speed Painting Performance and Auction at Harper Elementary School
Harper Elementary School is hosting a speed painting performance and auction on Thursday, April 13, with benefits supporting a walking path at the school. Former Harper student Randall Hedden will be at Harper and will do a speed painting which will then be auctioned off. A complete list of events include:
