IS IT TRUE that the Evansville City Councilwoman from the Third Ward, Anna Hargis has announced her resignation from the City Council?…the Evansville City Council will now be without a Certified Public Accountant for the first time since former Councilman John Friend decided not to seek re-election?…competent financial analysis is something the Evansville City Council does not seem to listen to with or without a CPA on the dais so Councilwoman Hargis may have been wasting her talent on the tax and spend cast of elected officials anyway?…Hargis will be moving on to bigger and better things like managing other people’s money at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor?…that sort of takes advantage of the time spent on the City Council where all that happens is taking money from one person and giving it to others in one form or another?…at least the role of financial advisor has a profit motive involved and the accountability of customer disappointment if the profits are not realized?…we certainly wish the University of Evansville graduate a long and successful career as a financial advisor and hope to God that Wayne Parke and the Vanderburgh County Republican Party appoints someone who has the brains to do analysis and the chutzpah to keep the tax and spend club known as the Evansville City Council from driving the city into bankruptcy?

IS IT TRUE that the founding general manager of the downtown Doubletree Hotel has tendered his resignation but has not yet disclosed where he will be going?…this is not a sign of any trouble in paradise as start-up general managers and plain old every day general managers are cut from a different cloth?…we do understand by virtue of a text message from Mole #12 that there was some trouble in paradise last Saturday night at the Doubletree when 3 guests were trapped in an elevator on the fourth floor and had to be extricated because the elevator which had lost its ability to stop where it was supposed to?…we have gotten several reports of growing pains over the course of the last 5 months since the Doubletree opened?…we are confident with the start-up general manager leaving town that everything at the downtown Evansville Doubletree will be utopian and free unicorn rides will be available on the proposed 10th floor rooftop martini bar?

IS IT TRUE that Evansville’s Olympic Gold Medalist Lilly King has made news again?…the former Reitz Lady Panther has broken the world record in the 100 meter backstroke at the World Championships in elegant form as she did last summer at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics?…the City County Observer and all of Evansville is very proud of what this likable young lady has accomplished in the pool?

IS IT TRUE that Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and President Donald Trump finally got a win yesterday with the passage of the bill that will allow discussions on the floor of the Senate regarding what to do about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known in some circles as the Unaffordable Care Act for its over 100% rise in insurance premiums, sky high deductibles and oppressive co-payments?…people have not forgotten that the ACA was born in deceptions like “if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor”, “If you like your plan you can keep your plan”, and “the average family will be saving $2,500 per year if we (Democrats) pass the ACA?…the chickens of those deceptions have come home to roost and are not appreciated at all outside of a small group with pre-existing conditions and some people who are getting a free ride?…it is now up to all of the members of congress to own up to the problems created by this partisan monstrosity and work together to repair whatever the heck the ACA actually turned out to be?

St. Vincent Names New President Of Its Southwest Indiana Region

St. Vincent has appointed Dan Parod to serve as the president of its Southwest Region, effective immediately.

In his new role, Parod is responsible for advancing St. Vincent’s mission of service in Evansville and the Warrick County Tri-State area, as well as providing leadership and guidance to the more than 750 physicians and 3,500 associates on staff at St. Vincent Evansville and St. Vincent Warrick.

Parod joined St. Vincent as the chief operating officer of its Southwest Region in August 2016 and began serving as the region’s interim president in February 2017.

During that time, Parod has built strong relationships with board members, physicians, associates and community leaders. Through his leadership, the St. Vincent Southwest Region has continued to grow with projects like the St. Vincent Orthopedic Hospital, which is scheduled to open in May 2019, and the St. Vincent Evansville management agreement with Daviess Community Hospital in Washington, Indiana.

“I’m thrilled about the work we’re doing to further our mission to serve our patients and communities here in the Tri-State area,” said Parod, who came to St. Vincent after serving as the senior vice president and chief operating officer at Rockford Health System in Rockford, Illinois.

“Dan brings nearly 25 years of experience in healthcare leadership to this role,” said Cheryl Harmon, chief operating officer for St. Vincent, one of the largest health systems within St. Louis-based Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system. “His extensive background in clinical integration, human resources, performance improvement, leading change and shaping culture makes him an ideal fit for this opportunity.”

Parod earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication from Illinois Wesleyan University and Master of Arts in Labor and Industrial Relations from the University of Illinois. He has also held a number of volunteer community leadership positions, including serving on the board of directors for both the United Way and YMCA.

Additional Guidance Issued On Pro Bono Reporting

With the annual attorney registration set to begin Tuesday in Indiana, the Coalition for Court Access has issued additional guidance for reporting pro bono hours.

Lawyers registering in Indiana are required to report either the number of hours they volunteered their legal services or the amount of money they donated to a legal aid provider. The CCA has developed a Frequently Asked Questions document to further explain the Professional Conduct Rule 6.7 on reporting pro bono hours and contributions.

In 2016, lawyers were first required to state whether they provided any pro bono services during their annual registration. An analysis of the registrations by the CCA found that 7,672 attorneys, roughly half of the lawyers in Indiana, contributed either time or money during the calendar year 2015. A total of 363,709 hours was provided and $987,075 were donated.

“Capturing this baseline information will allow us to put together a roadmap for areas of service that need improvement,” Chief Justice Loretta Rush said in a press release. “It’s encouraging to confirm there are thousands of lawyers helping those in need every year.”

USI to play Augustana and KWC in SCB HOF Classic

Small College Basketball announced that University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball will play Augustana University (South Dakota) and Kentucky Wesleyan College in the 2017 Hall of Fame Classic in November at the Ford Center. USI tips off the season with Augustana on November 3 and finishes the season-opening tournament with KWC on November 4. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. tipoffs.

USI was 2-0 last year in the SCB Hall of Fame Classic, defeating Florida Southern College, 108-94, and KWC, 85-81. Screaming Eagles’ forward Jeril Taylor was named the inaugural tournament’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 30.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest.

The Eagles are coming off a 25-5 campaign in 2016-17 that included trips to the GLVC Tournament and the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. USI was 12-1 at home, 7-2 on the road, and 6-2 on neutral courts last year.

Augustana, which won the 2016 NCAA II national championship, finished 24-9 last season advancing to the finals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the semifinals of the NCAA II Central Regional. KWC completed 2016-17 with a 28-3 mark, winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference before appearing in the NCAA II Midwest Regional.

In addition to USI, Augustana, and KWC, the SCB Hall of Fame Classic slate includes Ferris State University (28-5, 2017 NCAA II Midwest Semifinalist), St. Thomas Aquinas College (28-6, 2017 NCAA II Elite Eight), Indiana University (Pennsylvania) (28-4, 2017 NCAA II Atlantic Semifinalist), the University of Findlay (25-7, NCAA II Midwest Finalist), and the University of Montevallo (17-10).  The 2017 Hall of Fame Classic schedule of games is:

Dottie is already spayed, so she would qualify as a permissible “Pig in the City.” Her $100 adoption fee also includes her piggie vaccines. Kyle Lloyd To Make MLB Debut Against Mets

Lloyd Becomes Seventh Ace To Reach Majors

  Former Purple Ace Kyle Lloyd has been called-up to the San Diego Padres active roster and will make his Major League Baseball debut on Tuesday night as announced in a transaction by the team Tuesday evening.

In his debut, Lloyd will face the New York Mets at 9:10 p.m. (CDT) in Petco Park in San Diego, California.

The right-handed pitcher amassed a 7-5 record with a 3.71 ERA in 89.2 innings this season for the Padres’ Double-A affiliate, the San Antonio Missions, while making five starts with Triple-A El Paso in three separate stints with the Chihuauas.

Following a stellar career with the Purple Aces, Lloyd was drafted in the 29th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Padres. With the call-up, Lloyd becomes just the sixth-ever UE player to be elevated to an active MLB roster and the first since current Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland made his MLB debut on April 7.

“What was great about (Kyle) was his work ethic,” said UE Baseball head coach Wes Carroll. “He was a guy who worked extremely hard both on the field and off the field and he was a great teammate. He represents what the University of Evansville baseball program is all about and we couldn’t be more proud of Kyle Lloyd.”

Lloyd spent the first three seasons of his professional career in short-season A, full-season A, and advanced-A baseball before finding his stride in 2016. The California native spent the entirety of the 2016 season with Double-A San Antonio, where Lloyd finished with a 3.71 ERA and a 7-7 record with 99 strikeouts in 130.1 innings pitched.

With Lloyd being called-up, UE is the only university from the Missouri Valley Conference to have two pitchers on active MLB rosters.

 

House Passes Rep. Messer’s Proposal to Help Vets Impacted by ITT Tech Closure

A bipartisan proposal spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (R-IN) and U.S. Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) to help veterans impacted by school closures unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives today, as part of a landmark GI Bill reform package.

The Takano-Messer proposal retroactively restores GI Bill benefits to veterans who were attending Indiana-based ITT Technical Institute and California-based Corinthian Colleges, both of which closed abruptly impacting tens of thousands of students nationwide, including thousands of veterans.

The Takano-Messer proposal passed the House today as part of the Harry Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017, which improves and modernizes several aspects of the GI Bill.

“Today’s bipartisan GI Bill reform package is a big win for our veterans. Among many improvements, the bill helps thousands of veterans who lost their GI Bill benefits when ITT Tech closed,” Messer said. “Our military men and women count on their GI Bill benefits to build a career and life after serving our country. This bill will make sure they get that chance.”

Messer heard from many veterans following ITT Tech’s closure, including Jason Nyikos, a U.S. Navy veteran from Greenfield, Indiana, who had to start his degree completely from scratch, after spending two years at ITT Tech.

“Not a single credit transferred, and Jason’s GI Bill is going to run out before he can finish a new degree,” Messer said. “Jason’s story is one among thousands. Our veterans deserve better.”

The Takano-Messer proposal provides full restoration of GI Bill benefits within 90 days to students who attended ITT Tech and Corinthian Colleges, if they were not able to transfer their credits to a new institution. It also helps veterans who may be impacted by a school closure in the future. It mirrors previous legislation introduced by Takano and Messer.

“Restoring both tuition and housing benefits to veterans for a semester cut short by a school closure is simply the right thing to do,” Takano said. “And by making this provision retroactive, we are restoring a measure of justice for the students at ITT Tech and Corinthian, as well as others across the country who have been left out in the cold by a college that shuts down without warning.”

The Harry Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017 must now pass the Senate and be signed by the President to become law.

 

YESTERYEAR: Crescent Furniture Company By Pat Sides

When this building was razed in 1968, after standing for nearly a century, a small strip mall replaced it, drastically altering the appearance of the northeast corner of First Avenue at West Franklin Street. The Crescent Furniture Company was one of the “8 Great Factories,” an exclusive conglomeration of factories in Evansville that produced furniture from about 1860 to the late 1920s. By 1924, the city boasted over thirty factories that shipped furniture from coast to coast, as well as internationally. During the Great Depression, which closed many of them, the building functioned as a WPA recreational facility.
