Messer Supports Petition to Trigger Vote on Full Obamacare Repeal

0

U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) today announced his support for a discharge petition that would trigger a vote on a full Obamacare repeal bill.

The discharge petition would force lawmakers to vote on H.R. 1436, which repeals Obamacare, including its burdensome taxes and mandates, by the end of 2018. It includes the same Obamacare repeal language that passed both the House and the Senate in 2015.

“Frankly, Hoosiers are tired of endless debate on Obamacare, and the failure of Congress to act,” Messer said. “We have promised the American people we would repeal this failed law for seven years. It is not OK to shrug and walk away, while everyday Hoosiers continue to struggle with sky-high health costs, and government-mandated taxes and fees. It’s way past time to do what we said we would do, and finally provide relief.”

More than 150,000 Hoosiers making less than $50,000 a year were forced to pay $34 million in Obamacare penalties for not having insurance in 2014. In Indiana, health insurance costs on the individual marketplace have increased by 70 percent since Obamacare’s implementation. Only two health insurers remain on the Indiana marketplace, and some Indiana counties have access to not even one insurer.

To trigger a vote by the full House, the discharge petition must receive 218 signatures.

The House of Representatives passed its plan to repeal and replace Obamacare back in May. The Senate has failed to pass similar legislation.

Messer has been an outspoken critic of failed action on Obamacare. He called the Senate’s recent failure to repeal Obamacare “unacceptable” and a “broken promise to the American people.”

View the Eclipse at Ivy Tech Evansville on Aug. 21

0

An Eclipse viewing party is planned at Ivy Tech Evansville, on Aug. 21, from the beginning of the Eclipse through the end. Led by Michael Hosack, assistant professor of physics at Ivy Tech, Ivy Tech students and the public will have the opportunity to learn about the Eclipse as they are viewing it.

The event, “It’s a New Day at Ivy Tech,” will take place from 11:55 p.m. (CST) to 2:49 p.m. (CST) with maximum coverage at 1:24 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 21. The viewing party will be located on Ivy Tech’s northeast parking lot, at the corner of Colonial Avenue and Tremont Road on the Ivy Tech Campus at 3501 N. First Avenue in Evansville. The event is free and open to the public.

“We are pleased to be able to share our faculty’s expertise with our students and members of the community, during this unusual Eclipse which is occurring not only here – but across the United States,” said Chancellor Jonathan Weinzapfel. “Our faculty member, Dr. Hosack, is looking forward to sharing his insight in a safe and informative environment, as the moon passes between the earth and the sun.”

Hosack has been with Ivy Tech since 2013. Prior to Ivy Tech, he was a visiting assistant professor of physics at Purdue University, and worked for three years at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, as a scientist working on radiation detectors for satellites. He will lead an informal discussion intermittently as the first hour of the Eclipse is viewed.

Free ISO certified solar viewing glasses and souvenir t-shirts will be provided by Ivy Tech while supplies last. Also at the event will be materials to make small pinhole projectors for group or individual viewing of the eclipse. The solar glasses and the projector are the only safe ways to view the eclipse.

According to the website, “Great American Eclipse,” solar eclipses occur because of a cosmic coincidence: “the Sun is just about the same apparent size in our sky as the Moon. While the sun is actually about 400 times larger in diameter that the moon, the moon is also about 400 times closer than the sun. Therefore, the sun and moon appear to be about the same size in our sky.” The coming Eclipse is special because “it will be accessible to so many millions of Americans…There is a 60 to 70 mile wide path of totality,” according to the website. This year’s Eclipse is special because it cuts diagonally across the entire United States. The last time a total solar eclipse swept the whole width of the U.S. was in 1918.

Totality will cross from Oregon to Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Evansville is not in that path of totality, but individuals will be able to see an Eclipse that covers 99% of the sun. The next total solar Eclipse that will be in the U.S. will occur on April 8, 2024. The line of totality will cross from Texas, up through the Midwest, almost directly over Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, NY, and over New England to Maine, then to Canada.

Flatlined Returns To Old Self In Cliff Guilliams under Rocco

At bottom recap: Links to video of Groupie Doll and Gulliams interviews
Flatlined rallied through the stretch under Joe Rocco Jr. to get by One Mean Man and pacesetting One Go All Go for a half-length victory in the $50,000 Cliff Guilliams Handicap at Ellis Park.

The 5-year-old gelding has finished no better than seventh in four starts since capturing Gulfstream Park’s Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale, which followed being second by a neck in that track’s $100,000 El Prado. Turned out for a month after he was 10th in Churchill Downs’ Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on May 6, Flatlined covered 1 1/16 miles over firm turf in 1:41.67 and paid $17.20 as the fourth choice in the field of eight older horses.
“Yeah, those four races were pretty rough,” said winning trainer Scooter Dickey, who is stabled at Churchill Downs. “It was a lot of different things.  He had a lot of different little issues.  But it is good to have him back.  He beat a lot of good horses down there (at Gulfstream Park).  We knew he had the talent.”
“He’s a really super cool horse,” said jockey Joe Rocco, who won two races on the card. “He has a lot of quality to him, as you can tell from his past performances. Scooter did a really good job getting him here… When I fanned him out wide, he really just took off on me and I could see we were making up a lot of ground on the leaders.  I really did think that we had a good chance to get there and he just went on by them. He just kept running.  It was fun.”
Flatlined, a son of Flatter, now is 6-4-2 in 24 starts, earning $387,725 with the $30,070 payday for owners Brian Hytrek, Rodney Paden and Ryan Kuhn.
The Bernie Flint-trained One Mean Man, a multiple stakes-winner ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., put the most pressure on One Go All Go, winning that battle before losing the war.
“Turning for home, I know my little horse is a fighter,” Hernandez said. “I didn’t worry about the horse on my inside.  I knew he wasn’t going to let him by him, but that other horse (Flatlined) is a good horse; he arrived on the scene late and just nailed us.  You’re talking about two quality horses and we were just second-best today. The racetrack is playing very fair.  Winners are coming from everywhere. The crowd was good; really into it. It’s exciting here today.”
Declan Cannon guided One Go All Go through a methodical pace, only to get edged late while finishing a neck in front of 2016 Guilliams winner Pleuven, the 6-5 favorite.
“He gets out there in front, he likes to be ridden like that,” Cannon said. “He’s an old boy, he knows what he’s doing. He ran an honest race. Maybe he’ll go to Kentucky Downs; he won there (an allowance race) last year. He tries hard. I’m just waiting for him to show up this year. He’s been knocking at the door.”

Otters take series behind 3-0 win over Miners

0

The Evansville Otters got a home run from Ryan Long and an impressive start from Shane Weedman on the mound Sunday in a 3-0 win over the Southern Illinois Miners in front of 1,953 at Bosse Field.

Long led off the bottom of the first by leaving the park with his second homer of the season.

Evansville doubled the lead in the third with a Jeff Gardner sacrifice fly, scoring Josh Allen.

The Otters took a 3-0 lead in the sixth as Zach Welz grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out, which allowed Gardner to score.

Weedman earned his fifth win of the year, pitching 5 2/3 innings with no runs and one hit allowed. Weedman struck out four in the start as he improved to 5-3 on the season.

Matt Parish took the loss after surrendering two runs and four walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.

The Otters will make a brief road trip for a three-game series at Florence this week, starting with a doubleheader on Wednesday at 4:35 p.m. CT.

Fans can listen live to all three games on 91.5 FM WUEV as Lucas Corley (play-by-play) will provide coverage.

The Otters return home to Bosse Field on Friday to begin a series against the River City Rascals at 6:35 p.m. On Friday, the Otters partner with the city of Evansville and the ‘E is for Everyone’ campaign.

Admission to the game will be free with a special voucher courtesy of the campaign and vouchers can be picked up at any Evansville public library in advance of the game and a limited number will also be available at the Otters front office.

Fans must have a ticket to enter, either with the campaign voucher or a regular game ticket. The first 500 fans through the gates will also receive a t-shirt and postgame fireworks will follow the game.

Tickets for August home games are still available by going to evansvilleotters.com or calling 812-435-8686.

Flaming Tire Leads to two Drunk Driving Arrests

0
A flaming front tire caught the attention of a deputy working Drive Sober or Get Pulled Overtraffic enforcement early this morning. While investigating that driver for intoxication, a second intoxicated motorist was stopped trying to enter I-69 against traffic.

On Sunday, August 13, 2017 at 1:35 AM a sheriff’s deputy was patrolling the area of Covert Avenue near Season’s Ridge Boulevard when he observed a Toyota Sienna minivan traveling eastbound. The van was weaving between lanes and throwing sparks and debris from the right front wheel. As the deputy moved closer, he observed the front wheel was severely damaged and appeared to be on fire. The deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, but the vehicle continued, running the stop sign at Fuquay Road and Covert Avenue. The vehicle eventually stopped at the I-69 overpass. A second deputy working Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over traffic enforcement as well as an Evansville Police Department officer then arrived to assist.

The driver, Ms. Catherine Cecilia Javier, appeared to be intoxicated and was unable to successfully complete any of the standardized field sobriety tests offered to her. A certified breath alcohol test indicated her BrAC was .174, which is more than double the legal limit.

While still on scene with the disabled minivan, deputies observed a vehicle traveling west on Covert Avenue attempt to enter I-69 against traffic. Deputies directed the vehicle from the off ramp and then made contact with the driver, who identified himself as Mr. John Nicholas Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez appeared intoxicated and was unable to successfully complete any of the standardized field sobriety tests offered to him. A certified breath alcohol test indicated his BrAC was .147.

Sheriff Dave Wedding explained, “Thanks to funding from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, we are able to field additional deputies whose main focus is stopping drunk drivers.” The Sheriff added, “We will never know exactly how many lives are saved annually by this extra enforcement, but I can tell you that when we arrest intoxicated motorists driving vehicles close to catching fire or against interstate traffic, we are certainly having a positive impact on roadway safety.”

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, Evansville Police Department and Indiana State Policewill conduct Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement throughout August until Labor Day. Enforcement funding is provided by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

ARRESTED:

John Nicholas Gonzalez (pictured above), 30, of Henderson, KY. Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated as a Class A Misdemeanor

Minivan stopped by deputy on Covert Ave east of Newburgh Road.
