Soon after the first professional baseball league in the United States was organized in 1871, Evansville could boast of its own minor league team, which was a member of the Northwestern League. The ball park pictured here, built in 1895, served local teams for two decades. Located on Louisiana Street between Baker Avenue and Read Street, it was adjacent to the Evansville Union Stockyards. Although bleachers and a grandstand provided seating, fans could often be seen watching from the roof of the stockyard’s hotel. The last professional game was played at the park on June 16, 1915; on the following day, the more spacious and modern Bosse Field was dedicated before a large, enthusiastic crowd.

Air Quality Forecast
Air quality forecasts for Evansville and Vanderburgh County are provided as a public service. They are best estimates of predicted pollution levels that can be used as a guide so people can modify their activities and reduce their exposure to air quality conditions that may affect their health. The forecasts are routinely made available at least a day in advance, and are posted by 10:30 AM Evansville time on Monday (for Tuesday through Thursday) and Thursday (for Friday through Monday). When atmospheric conditions are uncertain or favor pollution levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, forecasts are made on a daily basis.
Ozone forecasts are available from mid-April through September 30th. Fine particulate (PM2.5) forecasts are available year round.

Air Quality Action Days
Ozone Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when maximum ozone readings averaged over a period of eight hours are forecasted to reach 71 parts per billion (ppb), or unhealthy for sensitive groups on the USEPA Air Quality Index scale.
Particulate Alerts are issued by the Evansville EPA when PM2.5 readings averaged over the period of midnight to midnight are forecasted to reach 35 micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3).
Current conditions of OZONE and FINE PARTICULATE MATTER are available in near real-time on the Indiana Department of Environment Management’s website.

Solar eclipse viewing party to be held on Quad
The USI Geology and Physics Department will hold a viewing party for the near total solar eclipse at 11 a.m. Monday, August 21 in the Quad on USI’s campus. The event will be free of charge and open to the public. Attendees will be able to view the eclipse through specially-equipped telescopes, and safety glasses will be handed out as they are available. Messer Supports Petition to Trigger Vote on Full Obamacare Repeal
U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) today announced his support for a discharge petition that would trigger a vote on a full Obamacare repeal bill.
The discharge petition would force lawmakers to vote on H.R. 1436, which repeals Obamacare, including its burdensome taxes and mandates, by the end of 2018. It includes the same Obamacare repeal language that passed both the House and the Senate in 2015.
“Frankly, Hoosiers are tired of endless debate on Obamacare, and the failure of Congress to act,â€Â Messer said. “We have promised the American people we would repeal this failed law for seven years. It is not OK to shrug and walk away, while everyday Hoosiers continue to struggle with sky-high health costs, and government-mandated taxes and fees. It’s way past time to do what we said we would do, and finally provide relief.â€
More than 150,000 Hoosiers making less than $50,000 a year were forced to pay $34 million in Obamacare penalties for not having insurance in 2014. In Indiana, health insurance costs on the individual marketplace have increased by 70 percent since Obamacare’s implementation. Only two health insurers remain on the Indiana marketplace, and some Indiana counties have access to not even one insurer.
To trigger a vote by the full House, the discharge petition must receive 218 signatures.
The House of Representatives passed its plan to repeal and replace Obamacare back in May. The Senate has failed to pass similar legislation.
Messer has been an outspoken critic of failed action on Obamacare. He called the Senate’s recent failure to repeal Obamacare “unacceptable†and a “broken promise to the American people.â€
