BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana swimming and diving athletes Andrew Capobianco and Carson Tyler qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics on the 3-meter springboard Sunday (June 23) at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials inside the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Capobianco makes his second Olympics after medaling at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the 3-meter synchronized competition and finishing 10th in the individual event.

Tyler, who won the 10-meter event on Saturday, earned his second event with his second-place finish on the springboard. He becomes the first U.S. diver since Mark Ruiz in 2000 to qualify for the Olympics in both individual events.

IU divers were the top-three finishers on the 3-meter springboard as Capobianco won with a score of 971.80, Tyler finished second (945.75) and Quinn Henninger took third (870.50). Capobianco and Tyler created a 55-point cushion between themselves and the field through Friday’s semifinal and did not let up Sunday. Boasting an average 3.6 degree of difficulty, Capobianco scored at least 80 points on five of his six dives Sunday. Tyler was sharp on his lower DD list, recording better than 70 points on each attempt. Henninger outscored both Olympians on Sunday after Friday’s scores carried over, hitting two dives for 91 points.

Indiana will send three divers to the 2024 Paris Games as Jessica Parratto earned her third Olympics, qualifying in the women’s synchronized 10-meter. The Indiana swimming and diving program has produced an Olympic diver in every Summer Games since 1964.

Two Hoosiers were added to the U.S. Olympic Team, USA Swimming announced Sunday night during its final session.

• IU associate head swimming coach Cory Chitwood was named an assistant coach for the open water national team, his first appointment to an Olympic Team.
• Blake Pieroni was the final addition to the 26-man roster as the sixth-place finisher in the 200-meter freestyle. He will represent Team USA on the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
• Additionally, incoming transfer Matt King was named to the Olympic team as the sixth-place finisher in the 100-meter freestyle. King will begin training at IU in the fall following his Olympic debut.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters blanked the Windy City ThunderBolts Sunday at Bosse Field, winning 9-0 for their first shutout of the year.

Right-hander Zach Smith (3-4) strung together a dazzling performance, going the distance and tossing the first nine-inning complete-game shutout of any Otter this season.

While backed with exemplary pitching, the Otters (16-23) tagged the ThunderBolts (16-24) early and never looked back.

In the first inning, Randy Bednar scored two with a double to right-center for the game’s first runs. He later came in to score on a Logan Brown fielder’s choice RBI.

Another trio of runs were put on the board in the third. Evansville strung together a two-out rally, ignited by Brown with a two-strike single to left field. The next batter was hit by a pitch. Four walks in a row followed, in addition to a wild pitch to score all runs.

Later in the fifth frame, Giovanni DiGiacomo doubled with one out. He came in to score on an error by the ThunderBolts shortstop, making it 7-0.

Mason White drove in the final runs in the seventh inning. Justin Felix and Delvin Zinn led off with a single and a walk, then scored on a ball hit to right-center field.

Despite the Otters even in hits at six with Windy City, 13 walks helped propel the Evansville bats. Pavin Parks drew four walks, with DiGiacomo garnering three.

Back to .500 on the home stand, the Otters will conclude the nine-game stint against the Joliet Slammers with a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.
