IS IT TRUE JULY 19, 2017

11
IS IT TRUE that a group lead by the Chamber of Commerce employee Josh Armstrong is trying to cram a new tax down on downtown businesses?…they want to charge for Main Street frontage, space, fees, and they somehow expect more taxes to help a struggling collection of businesses?…downtown businesses are already wearing the yoke of excessive utility bills because of the old poorly insulated buildings and vigilant meter maids writing tickets against shoppers and diners?…this tax has got to be one of the most insane things proposed if downtown revival is a goal?…we say Josh, this is not Michigan Avenue or Madison Avenue?…Josh, you seem to have lost any perspective on where you are?…this is not LA, New York, or South Beach in Miami?…this is Evansville, where people earn paltry salaries and pay exorbitant utility bills?…you really just need to forget about taxing these struggling businesses if you want to succeed in your Chamber of Commerce subsidized job?
IS IT TRUE that the City of Evansville is trying to develop about 8 to 10 parcels of land in the Second,Third, Sycamore and Vine streets areas in hopes it will attract a multi-million  residential and retail development? …that Kelley Coures, Director of the Department of Metropolitan Development predicts that a RFP will attract some awesome development proposals?  …wouldn’t it be wise if Mr. Coures spend his time on correcting the expensive North Main Street curb mistake and also trying to get rid of the dilapidated and vacant North Main CVS building he purchased several years ago for the city around $650,000?
IS IT TRUE that the Ford Center management In the shape of one Executive Director, Scott Schoenike of VenuWorks owned up that athletic events drew sparse crowds last year but he sure did put a positive spin on things?…Schoenike actually said the Ford Center is doing great, right before he said overall attendance was down due to low attendance for Evansville Thunderbolts and University of Evansville basketball games?…these are the only two sports teams that use the Ford Center and there are reasons for the attendance to be down?…the Aces simply didn’t have a very good season last year so it should not surprise anyone that attendance was down after the previous year that was a decent team?…the Aces have been losing fans ever since moving downtown and the only thing that will cure this situation is winning over 25 games a year while beating some good teams like Wichita State?
IS IT TRUE that the Evansville Thunderbolts is a different situations altogether?…Schoenike says they will work on promotions and giveaways to try and pull hockey fans in?…this is no,way to put together a winning team in a second tier hockey league?…even with a private businessman on board the Thunderbolts put an inferior product on the ice?…it is time to face the fact that Evansville crammed a $127 Million hockey rink down the taxpayer’s throats and a hockey team that has not caught on?…it isn’t likely to do so either?…all of the talk about this just being a fluke down year are delusional?…we wonder how many of out elected members of the City Council actually believes this nonsense?…we can’t wait to see how many hundreds of thousands of dollars that the Evansville Thunderbolts costs the taxpayers of Evansville this hockey season?
IS IT TRUE that the City County Observer would like to thank and congratulate the law enforcement members who took down a drug gang in Evansville and confiscated 10 pounds of fentanyl laced heroin?…there were eight people arrested who we’re operating a sophisticated heroin franchise in Evansville from Riverside Drive to Franklin Street?…it is not widely publicized that there have already been 43 deaths from illegal drug overdoses in Evansville in 2017?…five years ago Evansville was the meth capital of America and it now seems like our addict citizens have moved on to heroin?…we hope the fight to eradicate this scourge continues and that some public education programs will be launched to hopefully keep the deaths and destruction of heroin addiction?
IS IT TRUE that a group of private citizens has formed a group to “Support Those Who Protect US”?  …that people from all walks of life shall be holding a “Public Safety Appreciation Ceremony” on August 23, 2017 on the steps of the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum?  …stay turned for additional information concerning this long overdue public event thanking the “Public Service Employees” of Vanderburgh County for doing an outstanding job in protecting us?  …its time for citizens of Evansville to stand up and be counted by attending the “Public Safety Appreciation Ceremony” on August 23, 2017 on the steps of the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum?
Todays READERS POLL question is: Do you feel that the city should add an additional tax on downtown businesses to encourage development?

Joe Donnelly’s Outsourcing – The Plot Thickens

Joe Donnelly’s Outsourcing – The Plot Thickens

Things are getting a bit strange in the wake of the AP’s revelation that Joe Donnelly has been profiting off of his family business’s outsourcing jobs to Mexico.

After the AP reported on the company’s outsourcing activity and Joe Donnelly was called out for the rank hypocrisy of attacking other businesses for outsourcing jobs while profiting from the same practice, Mexico Joe, in a panic, announced that he would sell his stock, locking in his profits. And now, his family’s company has removed reference to the Mexico facility from their website (compare the website as it stands today to as it appeared before Donnelly’s scandal). So did Mexico Joe and his family have a change of heart and move these jobs back to the United States? Or are they continuing to outsource manufacturing jobs to Mexico and just trying to hide it from Indiana voters?

“No amount of website editing can hide the fact that Joe Donnelly and his family business profited from shipping jobs to Mexico,” said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera. “Mexico Joe has been caught in the act engaging in astonishing hypocrisy, and Hoosiers are not likely to forget.”

Air Quality – Ozone Alert 7/19/17

0

Please be advised that outdoor ozone levels may reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for the 8-hour Ozone Standard.

About This Alert:  Abundant sunshine with little cloud cover will create an opportunity for ozone to breach the 8-hour standard on Wednesday. Even if the 8-hour standard isn’t exceeded, hourly readings could reach the USG category. High dew points and increasing humidity could potentially help stall ozone production, but uncertainty in the forecast models is too great not to call an alert.

Air Quality Index Ozone 8-hr average
Good (0-50) 0-54 ppb
Moderate (51 – 100) 55-70 ppb
→   Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (101 – 150) 71-85 ppb
Unhealthy (151 – 200) 86-105 ppb
Very Unhealthy (201 – 300) 106-200 ppb
HAZARDOUS (301 – 500+) >200 ppb

The U.S. EPA recommends that sensitive groups such as children, older adults, those with respiratory diseases, and people who are active outdoors limit prolonged outdoor exertion especially between the hours of 12:00 and 7:00 p.m. when the highest ozone concentrations are most likely to occur.

Within a few hours or days, exposure to higher levels of Ozone can cause lung and throat irritation, shortness of breath, and aggravate respiratory diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis.  For more information about ozone and your health please go to: http://www.epa.gov/airnow/ozone-c.pdf

To do your share to protect air quality and reduce pollution levels:

  • Conserve energy – turn off lights, reduce air conditioner use, etc.
  • Use Public transit, or limit driving and avoid unnecessary idling and drive-through windows, especially if there are long lines.
  • Postpone refueling your vehicle until after 6:00 p.m.; don’t ‘top-off’ the tank when filling up.
  • Consider using electric or manually operated lawn and garden equipment.   If you use gasoline-powered equipment, try to avoid use between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • Limit the use of cleaning fluids, paint thinners or other materials containing volatile organic compounds (VOC).
  • Postpone painting projects or use low-VOC coatings.
  • OPEN BURNING IS PROHIBITED during an air quality alert.  The use of gas and charcoal grills for cooking is permitted, however delaying until after 6 p.m. is recommended.

The extensive co-headlining tour will kick-off on October 12 at Shreveport’s Municipal Auditorium and includes stops at Houston’s Ziegenbock Festival, Charlotte’s Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre, Little Rock’s Verizon Arena, New York’s Terminal 5 and Philadelphia’s Tower Theatre among many others. Pre-sale begins tomorrow with general on-sale launching this Friday at 10:00am local time. See below for complete itinerary.

About Aaron Lewis:

Aaron Lewis, the self-proclaimed “Northern Redneck” and Staind front man, achieved critical and commercial success with his latest album, SINNER, which earned him the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums, Top Country Albums and Top Digital Albums Charts upon release. The 12-track project, voted one of Whiskey Riff’s 40 Best Country Albums of 2016, was recorded in 16 hours at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios with producer Buddy Cannon (George Strait, Merle Haggard, George Jones). Lewis penned eight of the songs, in addition to covering Chris Stapleton’s “Whiskey and You” and The Dixie Chicks’ “Travelin’ Soldier.” Additionally, Lewis collaborates with Willie Nelson on the album’s title track while Grammy Award-winning artists Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski and Vince Gill are also featured. SINNER was also one of Billboard’s 10 Best Country Albums of 2016, while The Boot raves, “Aaron Lewis shows a surprising understanding and respect for country music with his latest album, SINNER. Drawing from his childhood influences of listening to country music in his grandfather’s car, SINNER shows Aaron’s abilities as a singer, songwriter, musician and stylist. SINNER might just be the record that propels Aaron to a permanent place in country music.”

About Blackberry Smoke:

Blackberry Smoke’s acclaimed new album Like An Arrow debuted at No. 1 on both Billboard’s Country Albums and Americana Albums charts as well as No. 3 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart. Recorded just outside of the band’s native Atlanta at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw, GA, the 12-track album was self-produced and features very special guest Gregg Allman on the album’s closing track, “Free On The Wing.” Of the album, American Songwriter praises, “…Blackberry Smoke fills the bill for the next generation of gutsy, heartfelt and honest Southeast rocking with plenty of talent, tons of drive and no apologies,” while the Boston Globe asserts, “…the needle can be dropped on Like An Arrow until its grooves become as well-worn as the classic albums that inspired this band of country-rock workhorses.” Named “Country music’s most ferocious live band” by Rolling Stone, Blackberry Smoke has toured relentlessly since their debut in in 2001, building a strong and loyal community of fans. The five-piece band is made up of: Charlie Starr (lead vocals, guitar), Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals), and Brandon Still (keyboards).

Messer Urges Senate to Heed President’s Call and Pass Full Obamacare Repeal Now

0

U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) urged the Senate today to heed President Trump’s call to pass a full Obamacare repeal bill now and then work on a replacement package.

President Trump tweeted last night, “Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!”

The President’s tweet follows another setback in the Senate’s efforts to pass an Obamacare repeal and replace bill.

“Hoosiers are sick and tired of endless debate on the Obamacare repeal bill, and the failure of Congress to act. This is DC politics as usual, and exactly why Americans sent the President to Washington to shake things up and get something done,” Messer said. We’ve had more than enough time to deliver on this promise to Americans, who have sent us here for three election cycles to repeal this failed law.  I agree with President Trump that we must repeal Obamacare NOW and then work together on a plan to ensure Hoosiers get the health care they want and deserve.”

The House of Representatives passed their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare back in May.
