Eagles fly by Spartans in exhibition game

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball team opened the 2017-18 campaign with a 108-66 victory over Manchester University in an exhibition game Monday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI starts the 2017-18 regular season November 3-4 in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Ford Center in Evansville.

The SCB Hall of Fame Classic features the Screaming Eagles against Augustana University Friday at 6 p.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday at 6 p.m.

The first half saw USI build an impressive 52-33 lead by shooting a blistering 62.1 percent from the field (18-29). The Eagles were led during the first half run by the hot hands of junior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) and senior guard Marcellous Washington (Lexington, Kentucky).

Stein had a team-high 18 points on five-of-seven from the field, including a three-point field goal, and seven of eight from the stripe. Washington followed Stein in the scoring column with 12 points on four-of-five from the field and four-of-four from the stripe.

In the second half, the Eagles continued to cruise as the extended the first half lead to as many as 43 points, 102-59, with 4:45 to play before settling for the 108-66 victory. USI finished the game shooting 61.9 percent from the field (39-63), 47.8 from beyond the arc (11-23), and 76.0 percent from the line (19-25).

Stein finished the game with a double-double, including a game-high 26 points and 10 assists. He finished nine-of-12 from the field, one-of-two from long range, and seven-of-eight from line.

Washington ended the exhibition game behind Stein with 17 points. Senior forward Julius Rajala (Helsinki, Finland) and freshman forward Emmanuel Little (Indianapolis, Indiana) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 16 points and 13 points, respectively.

Little also finished the game with double-double, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.

Channel 44 News: Tropicana Riverboat Leaves Evansville Riverfront

OCTOBER 30TH, 2017  BRITNEY TAYLOR EVANSVILLE, INDIANA

 The Tropicana Riverboat is leaving the Evansville riverfront for good. After nearly 22 years, operating as Indiana’s first riverboat casino, the riverboat will leave the riverfront Monday afternoon.

Within the next hour, the riverboat will be moved from the riverfront to Evansville Marina to remove the boat’s smokestacks.

Tropicana officials have not given a statement about where the boat will be going, but some sources have told 44News that its headed south to New Orleans and it may become a tour boat.

The Tropicana riverboat has been a landmark in the community since December of 1995 and has served as a casino gaming vessel on the city’s riverfront. It closed permanently on October 16th to prepare for the new land-based casino, which opened on October 20th.

Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana To Host Holiday Local Art Sale

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana will host its annual Holiday Fine Art Sale from November 18th through December 22nd.  The sale will be held in the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery, located in the Arts Council, and will include jewelry, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, prints, fiber art, and other unique gift items.  All items in the sale will be made by local artists, and many will be representative of Evansville and our region.

The Holiday Fine Art Sale opening weekend will run from 12 to 4 pm on Saturday, November 18th, and Sunday, November 19th. Special hours for shopping will also be available on “Small Business Saturday,” November 25th, from 10 am – 5 pm.

Gov. Holcomb Makes Appointments to Various Boards, Commissions and Offices

INDIANAPOLIS—Governor Eric J. Holcomb today announced several appointments and reappointments to various state boards, commissions and offices.

Governor’s Residence Commission

The Governor made one new appointment to the Governor’s Residence Commission:

  • Michael Dilts (Indianapolis), president & CEO of Shiel Sexton, will join the commission and will serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

Indiana Bond Bank Board of Directors

The Governor made three reappointments to the board of directors of the Indiana Bond Bank:

  • David O. Mann (Indianapolis), managing partner at Spring Mill Venture Partners and co-managing partner at The Firefly Group, will continue his service on the board. His new term expires October 31, 2020.
  • Marjorie O’Laughlin (Indianapolis), former treasurer of the State of Indiana, will continue her service on the board. Her new term expires October 31, 2020.
  • Cynthia Walsh (Crown Point), president of Walsh Financial Services, will continue her service on the board. Her new term expires October 31, 2020.

The Governor Also Made Two New Appointments To The Board:

  • Teresa K. Randall (Guilford), president & CEO of One Dearborn Inc., will join the board. Her term expires October 31, 2020.
  • Charles L. Williams (Valparaiso), managing partner at C.L. Williams & Companies, LLC, will join the board. His term expires October 31, 2020.

 Ivy Tech Community College Board of Trustees

The Governor made two reappointments to the Ivy Tech Community College Board of Trustees:

  • Region 7: Clay, Greene (western portion), Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, & Vigo counties
    • Darrel D. Zeck, vice president & CAO of STARK Industries, will continue his service on the board until June 30, 2021.
  • Region 10: Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, & Jennings counties
    • Jesse Brand, president of Brands, Inc., will continue his service on the board until June 30, 2020.

The Governor Also Made Three New Appointments To The Board:

  • Region 11: Dearborn, Jefferson, Ohio, Ripley, & Switzerland counties
    • Harold Hunt, president and founder of SuperATV, will join the board on November 1 and will serve until June 30, 2021.
  • Region 13: Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Orange, Scott, & Washington counties
    • Kerry Stemler, owner and CEO of KM Stemler Co., Inc., will join the board on November 1 and will serve until June 30, 2021.
  • Region 14: Greene (eastern portion), Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, & Owen counties

Public Access Counselor

The Governor reappointed Public Access Counselor Luke Britt to a new term, which will expire October 31, 2021.
