We hope that todays “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?”
IS IT TRUE that the House of Representative of the United States has many doctors who have given up their life’s work to run for elected office and Southwest Indiana is not without and example of such an official?…Dr. Larry Bucshon was a respected doctor before turning in his medical practice to run for congress?…the newly acknowledged issue with nationwide opiate addiction is just the kind of problem that congressional doctors should be taking on and Congressman Bucshon has stepped up to contribute?…Bucshon was in town last week to meet with the Vanderburgh County Substance Abuse Council?…while doctors are now grabbing the headlines to find ways to reduce drug addiction, they were also a significant part of the cause of the opiate epidemic when they were writing prescriptions for painkillers like they were handing out vouchers for happy meals?…in return for handing out vouchers for opiate based drugs like Percocet and Oxycodon, physicians across the country were being courted and rewarded by drug companies with trips, awards, and fancy titles?…many of the doctors in congress have been the recipients of campaign contributions from the very companies that manufacture the opiates that the doctors wrote prescriptions for?…today we are all aghast at the 55 deaths in little Evansville this year from heroin overdoses?…exercising a little knowledge and common sense could have gone a long way toward preventing the mass addiction problem that the United States is faced with today?…the question is, “should we trust the architects of the addiction problem to find a cure?
IS IT TRUE that the Evansville Thunderbolts took to the Ford Center ice for their first home game of the year last weekend?…adrenaline must have been at play as the Thunderbolts broke out to a 4-1 lead over the team from Peoria but eventually grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory to lose the game in a shoot out?…losing a 4-1 lead in hockey is about like losing a 28-7 lead in a football game?…the official attendance announced over the public address system in Ford Center was a respectable 3,679?…the City County Observer MOLES in attendance have advised us that there was no where remotely close to 3,679 people in the seats?…the announced attendance must have been based on how many free tickets were handed out to try to re-introduce Evansville to hockey?
IS IT TRUE that a website known as Niche.com that tracks the cost of living across the United States has just named the Indiana cities of Fort Wayne, Evansville, and South Bend as the cheapest places in the country to live?…the City County Observer is confident that no one who contributed to this article has ever faced a utility bill from Vectren with respect to local earnings or an ever increasing (unreasonable) bill from the City of Evansville Sewer and Water Utility?…when digging an inch below the surface one finds that Niche.com only considers housing, food, fuel, and property taxes?…property taxes are by definition 1% of the market value of the house so cheap houses means low taxes?…with the always under attack HOMESTEAD TAX CREDIT there are some homeowners who pay nearly no property taxes at all?…fuel may be cheap in Evansville but it is always cheaper across the money saving bridge in Kentucky or down at Marina Point?…food is and always has been reasonably priced in Evansville but part of that is because locals tend not to be willing to pay for designer brands and have an appetite for very inexpensive fast food from a drive up window?…Niche also excluded the cost of healthcare which is quite high due to the high levels of obesity, smoking, sedentary living and abuse of alcohol?…while Evansville is not even close to the cost of places like San Francisco, it is far from the cheapest place in the United States?
IS IT TRUE the statement make by Steve Hammer that he was approached by members of the local Chamber of Commerce to run for Vanderburgh County Commissioner didn’t sit well with some rural voters?  …years ago the area Chamber of Commerce played a major role in the campaign to approve the Unification of Vanderburgh City/County Government and some rural voters haven’t forgotten that?  …we are pleased to see someone with Mr. Hammer business and educational background running for elected office?
IS IT TRUE we wonder if the newly announced independent member of the Evansville City Council Dan McGinn will be changing his leadership style as the current City Council Finance Chairman?  …or will he continue to be an out of control tax and spend liberal?
IS IT TRUE we are hearing that a group of Evansville taxpayers are quietly working on putting together a detailed Freedom Of Information Request concerning the financial information that City Controller Russ Lloyd presented to City Council during the 2018 budget hearings?

Channel 44 News: City Council Updates Affordable Housing Trust Fund Guidelines

 Evansville City Council approves a set of rules creating guidelines for spending money from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

This comes after council voted against transferring $100,000 into the fund a few weeks ago.

The new set of guidelines approved by city council will allow the board to have a say in how the money in the fund is spent.

The reason is to become more transparent.

“Council should have the right to know what’s being funded,” said councilwoman Missy Mosby. “And what’s going on.”

Before the approval of the ordinance, the AHTF could be used within Vanderburgh County. It’s been changed to only allow the funds to be used within Evansville city limits.

These changes will not affect the process people or Community Development Corporations (CDC) must go through to apply for the money.

City Councilwoman Connie Robinson was the lone ‘no’ vote against the ordinance.

Sullivan Named Aviation IN State Representative Of The Year

State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) was recently named State Representative of the Year by Aviation Indiana for her support of the state’s balanced biennial budget, which included funding for local airports.

“When we passed the state’s two-year budget, special emphasis was placed on infrastructure and economic development in our state,” Sullivan said. “By prioritizing funding for our state’s airports, Indiana will be able to invest an additional $1.7 million in revenue in the Airport Development Grant Fund. These funds can be used by INDOT to pursue aviation infrastructure projects. I want to thank Aviation Indiana for this award, and I will continue supporting commonsense policies that invest in our infrastructure, which has a positive impact on our economy.”

Doug Joest, Aviation Indiana president and executive director of the Evansville-Vanderburgh Airport Authority, presented the award to Sullivan at a Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce event in Evansville.

“Representative Sullivan was instrumental in passing legislation that created a dedicated fund for airports in the state,” Joest said. “By having a state-dedicated fund that matches grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, airports across the state can better plan federal projects. We think that by having these funds in place, Indiana airports will be in a better position to receive additional federal discretionary funds. She understands the important role aviation serves in helping local businesses connect to their customers. By being connected, this creates jobs in our communities. We appreciate all of Holli’s hard work so that airports can continue to help Hoosier businesses grow.”

Sullivan serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, which reviews all revenue-related policies and is the primary architect of the state’s biennial budget.

State Rep. Holli Sullivan represents House District 78, which includes portions of Vanderburgh and Warrick counties.

AG Curtis Hill Scheduled To Appear Tuesday On ‘Fox and Friends’

Attorney General Curtis Hill is scheduled to return Tuesday, Oct.24, as a guest on Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends,” the nation’s No. 1-rated morning cable television program. He is expected to appear live by satellite around 7:20 a.m. EST.

Gen. Hill appeared on the show Saturday, Oct. 21, to discuss his recent op-ed regarding NFL protests and the issue of black-on-black violence. Tuesday’s conversation is expected to revolve around similar topics.

Judge Rules Against Workers In ‘Popcorn-Lung’ Lawsuit

A federal judge Wednesday ruled against 27 workers who claimed they suffered respiratory injuries from exposure to a microwave popcorn butter flavor ingredient that has been linked to lung disease in the manufacturing process.

Senior Judge Sarah Evans Barker granted summary judgment to Givaudan Flavors Corp. on the final remaining claim in a suit brought in February 2014 in the District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. The plaintiffs claimed they suffered respiratory injuries from exposure to the flavoring ingredient diacetyl while working at the ConAgra Snack Foods Group plant in Rensselaer.

Barker previously ruled for Givaudan, leaving only the plaintiffs’ complaint of defective product design remaining in the case. Her ruling Wednesday on that issue likewise found for Givaudan, which supplied the diacetyl-containing ingredient to the ConAgra plant.

 “Plaintiffs provide no expert testimony on the costs and benefits of a diacetyl-free butter flavor or that the diacetyl-free butter flavors that existed prior to 2007 were cost-effective alternatives under general negligence principles,” Barker wrote in Gregory Aregood Jr., et al. v. Givaudan Flavors Corp., et al., 1:14-cv-00274. “… The costs and benefits of diacetyl-free butter flavors, or their cost effectiveness, is not common knowledge. Further, the fact that a diacetyl-free alternative existed is not enough; Plaintiffs must present evidence that the diacetyl-free butter flavors’ risks, benefits, and costs were favorable.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, current scientific evidence points to diacetyl as one agent that can cause flavorings-related lung disease. Other flavoring ingredients may also play a role.

Glenwood Leadership Academy Hosts Don’s Claytons Coat-A-Kid Kickoff

Glenwood Leadership Academy in Evansville, Indiana will host the 2017 Don’s Claytons Coat-A-Kid campaign kickoff on Tuesday October 24th at 8:30 a.m. (CST). Students from the K-8 school will be at the event providing youthful enthusiasm and generating support for the program. In previous years, local kickoff sites have included Caze, Harwood, Lincoln, Culver, and many other schools. At each Coat-A-Kid kickoff, 95-110 students have received winter coats.

Since its implementation at the local level, the Coat-A-Kid initiative has distributed over 150,000 coats throughout the community. Steve Schmitt, owner of Don’s Claytons DCI Fine DryCleaning, is committed to annually providing a winter coat for every child who needs one. Each year, from October through December, community members are invited to bring gently used and new coats to any Don’s Claytons location. The coats are cleaned, if needed, and distributed to area infants, children, and teens via the Salvation Army, Evansville Christian Life Center, and in Boonville, at Hope Central.

Steve Schmitt notes nearly 5000 coats were donated to the 2016 Coat-A-Kid campaign.

16th Annual Norwegian Foot March set to host over 500 on USI campus

On Saturday, November 4, just one week before Veteran’s Day, over 500 participants will take on a University of Southern Indiana Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) tradition. The Norwegian Foot March will host cadets, military personnel, veterans and civilians who hope to finish the 18.6-mile race in under 4.5 hours. At 7:30 a.m., the start of the race will be marked by the firing of a U.S. Army howitzer.
