The Kevin Hart Irresponsible Tour FORD CENTER- January 28

Tickets Go On Sale Friday, October 20 at 10 AM

Kevin Hart returns to Evansville with his “The Kevin Hart Irresponsible” Tour and will perform at Ford Center on January 28. Tickets will go on sale Friday, October 20 at 10 AM and can be purchased at Ford Center Ticket Office, Ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 800.745.3000.

Kevin Hart has made a name for himself as one of the foremost comedians, entertainers, authors and businessmen in the industry today.

2017 has already been a banner year for Hart, his memoir I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons debuted at Number One on the New York Times Bestseller list and has remained on the list for nine consecutive weeks. The book also toped records on the Audible platform, selling over 100,000 copies in the first five weeks. Earlier in the year Hart voiced a title character in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. To close 2017, Kevin will appear in the Sony reboot of the classic film Jumanji alongside Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black. In March of 2018, Kevin will star alongside Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman in his first dramatic role in the Untouchables for The Weinstein Co. Hart will soon begin shooting the Feature Comedy Night School for Universal, a film in which he co-wrote under the Hartbeat production banner and will also star in. The comedy follows a group of misfits who are forced to attend adult classes in the longshot chance they’ll pass the GED exam.

Hart’s newest business venture is his digital platform the LOL NETWORK – Laugh Out Loud, the comedy brand and multi- platform network founded by Hart in partnership global content leader Lionsgate. The streaming video service will launch on

August 3rd featuring a slate of original scripted and unscripted comedy series, stand-up specials, licensed programming, and live broadcasts. Laugh Out Loud combines Hart’s unparalleled social media savvy that earned him 100+ million followers with his vision for the future of comedy – social, mobile, multicultural, and seriously funny. Hart handpicked the boldest comedic voices to create, produce and star in content exclusive to the service. These include digital superstar comedy talents GloZell, King Bach, Emmanuel Hudson, DC Young Fly, Draya Michelle, David So, Timothy DeLaGhetto and Anjelah Johnson (MADtv, viral sensation Bon Qui Qui) – among others – who have amassed tens of millions of fans across social media. The Laugh Out Loud service will also feature up and coming comedians curated by Hart through LOL showcases at events, including a partnership with the world’s top comedy festival “Just for Laughs.”

Hart’s recent movie projects include the animated film The Secret Life of Pets (Illumination Entertainment) and the biggest grossing live action comedy Central Intelligence (New Line Cinema and Universal Pictures), Universal’s Ride Along 2, which grossed over $100 million worldwide, Screen Gems’ The Wedding Ringer, and Warner Brothers’ Get Hard. The consummate worker, Hart is also a force in television, executive producing the show, Real Husbands of Hollywood which is currently in Season 5. In addition, Comedy Central will launch 2 standup comedy series’ Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City and Untitled Kevin Hart Stand-Up Series.

In addition, Hart embarked on the multi-city domestic and international WHAT NOW comedy tour. Domestically, he sold out 8 tristate area arenas, including Madison Square Garden, Barclays, Prudential Center and Jones Beach, selling over 100,000 tickets in the NY market. He was also the first comedian to sell out an NFL stadium, selling over 50,000 tickets in one show. Internationally, he sold out over a dozen arenas in the European market, selling over 150,000 tickets, and sold out arenas across Australia, selling 100,000 tickets. Hart’s hit comedy tour grossed over $100 million worldwide.

In September, 2011 Hart released Laugh At My Pain the feature film version of his comedy tour (under the same name). The movie grossed over $7 million, and was 2011’s most successful film of those released in less than 300 theaters. The LAMP tour was so successful, it catapulted Hart to 2011’s number one comedian on Ticketmaster, and in February, 2011, he sold out the Nokia Theater for two nights in a row, breaking the record previously set by Eddie Murphy. This lead to the LAMP DVD hitting double platinum in February 2012, after being on sale for only a month.

Hart’s other television credits include, hosting BET’s classic stand-up comedy series Comic View: One Mic Stand, ABC’s The Big House, which he also executive produced and wrote, and recurring roles on Love, Inc, Barbershop, and Undeclared. He will soon begin production on Night School, the first comedic piece he wrote, which will be produced by HartBeat.

YESTERYEAR: Prohibition in Evansville by Pat Sides

0

Amused witnesses watch in the background as Lettie Payne destroys bottles of alcoholic beverages at an unidentified site in Evansville after Prohibition went into effect. Payne was an active member of the Indiana chapter of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, a national organization devoted to social reform that aimed to “protect the home” and uplift society in general. She served as president of the Vanderburgh County unit, as well as a delegate to the WCTU’s national convention in 1918.

In that year, the Indiana legislature passed a bill that made the state “dry,” although nationally, Prohibition did not go into effect until January 16, 1920. The ban on alcohol officially ended in Indiana on April 7, 1933.

Professor Arlen Kaufman Invested as University of Evansville’s G. Richard and Rita Eykamp Endowed Chair in Chemistry

0

The University of Evansville’s William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry has announced the investiture of UE professor Arlen Kaufman as the G. Richard and Rita Eykamp Endowed Chair in Chemistry. The investiture ceremony was held Saturday, October 14, on UE’s campus.

The G. Richard and Rita Eykamp Endowed Chair in Chemistry was established by the Eykamps to assist in promoting undergraduate teaching excellence in chemistry. This endowed chair is awarded to a faculty member in the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences who has demonstrated an understanding of the importance of teaching excellence in undergraduate chemistry, and demonstrated teaching excellence in her or his own classroom.

Kaufman, a professor of chemistry, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Kansas and his Doctorate of Philosophy in analytical chemistry from Purdue University, one of the top institutions in the field.

Since arriving at UE, Kaufman has demonstrated his commitment to actively engaging undergraduate students in novel research. The main areas of study in the Kaufman research group include developing analytical techniques for detecting biologically relevant molecules and monitoring chemical pollutants in the local environment. These efforts have resulted in collaborations with colleagues in chemistry and biology at UE and other institutions, and projects have been funded by Naval Surface Warfare and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Research students in the Kaufman group are exploring the use of ambient ionization techniques coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to increase speed and reliability of the analysis of secondary plant metabolites. The first stage of this work was published in Analytical Methods and was selected by the editors to be featured in their “Hot” article in Analytical Methods 2015.

Kaufman has taught a variety of courses in chemistry, environmental studies, and general education. His current teaching responsibilities include Principles of Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Analysis, and Chemistry Senior Seminar. He is a dedicated teacher who has worked tirelessly to engage students in active learning through the use of research projects in his lab-based courses. Kaufman has received the College of Liberal Arts and Science Dean’s Teaching Award and in 2010 was voted “Best College Professor” in Evansville by the readers of Evansville Living Magazine.

VHS’ LOW-COST SPAY & NEUTER CLINIC FIXES 39 COMMUNITY CATS IN VANDERBURGH COUNTY FOR NATIONAL FERAL CAT DAY

1

National Feral Cat Day was October 16th, 2017. The VHS Davidson Rausch Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic is a proud annual participant in this initiative. For 2017, the Clinic offered $10 spay/neuter surgeries for community cats in Vanderburgh County. 39 cats were fixed on Monday, October 16th as part of this initiative. This means 39 fewer cats reproducing and having unwanted litters of kittens on our community’s streets.

The VHS Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic opened in July of 2007 and has performed more than 65,000 surgeries since then. This has prevented millions of unwanted puppies & kittens from entering area shelters. Every year, a large portion of the 800+ kittens the VHs takes in come from mothers who are feral or community cats. The VHS offers a low-cost TNR (trap-neuter-release) program through our Clinic year-round. People can rent a trap or use their own, and get a community cat fixed at a low rate. The fees, which are $30 for males or $50 for females, also include vaccinations and an ear tip for identification. The Clinic is NOT restricted by income or residency; anyone, even those outside Vanderburgh County, can use these services.

The driving force behind this national effort is Alley Cat Allies, an agency that promotes the care and spay/neuter of community cats. Visit www.nationalferalcatday.org for more resources and information.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the VHS receives no funding from the city of Evansville or Vanderburgh County. The organization is not financially affiliated in any way with the Humane Society of the United States, Alley Cat Allies, or the ASPCA. Initiatives like this are made possible through the Spay/Neuter Fund. Supporters can contribute to sponsor a surgery in a number of ways. They can visit www.vhslifesaver.org and click “Donate Now,” specifying “spay/neuter” in the memo line. Donations can be made over the phone using a Visa, Discover, or Mastercard by calling (812) 426-2563 Tuesday through Saturday. Or, donations can be dropped off at the shelter at 400 Millner Industrial Drive in Evansville Tuesday-Saturday 9 am – 6 pm. Checks should be made payable to VHS.

ADOPT A PET

0

Pickle is an adult male American Staffordshire Terrier mix! He was found running out in the country of Warrick County with Dilly (hence their names.) Pickle happens to be heartworm-positive, but his adoption fee includes treatment (which normally costs $300+ for a dog Pickle’s size!) The VHS staff and volunteers say Pickle is absolutely wonderful. He would do just fine in a household with other dogs, cats, or young children. Take Pickle home neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped (and ready for heartworm treatment) for only $100. Contact the Vanderburgh Humane Society at (812) 426-2563 Tuesday-Saturday 12-6 for adoption details!

Admission ceremony reminds new attorneys of their duty

0

Marilyn Odendahl for www.theindianalawyer.com

Indiana’s newest lawyers were sworn in Monday morning as their families and friends took pride in their accomplishment and members of the Indiana judiciary offered advice.

The Indiana Supreme Court Admission Ceremony was held for close to 300 individuals who had passed the 2017 Indiana Bar Exam. Participants took the oath to be admitted to the Supreme Court of Indiana as well as the district courts for the Southern and Northern Indiana Districts.

Justices from the Indiana Supreme Court along with the Indiana Court of Appeals, Indiana Tax Court and the Southern and Northern Indiana District Courts were present. Also, representatives came from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, Valparaiso University Law School and Notre Dame University Law School as well as the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indiana Bar Foundation.

The speakers all emphasized the intangibles of being a lawyer and reminded the newest members of the bar that they now belong to a profession. Society will expect more from them as they now have the responsibility of helping others, seeking truth, solving problems, and standing up against oppression all while being respectful and ethical.

Indiana Court of Appeals Chief Judge Nancy Vaidik told the new attorneys the numbers that so mattered in their past — grade point average, LSAT score, class rank — were no longer important. Their legacies would be built on how they make their part of the world better.

Both Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana Paul Cherry and Indiana Justice Geoffrey Slaughter advised the lawyers to always make time for family and friends outside of the law.

“No success at the office is worth failure at home,” Slaughter said.

The Indiana oath was administered by Marion Superior Judge Sheila Carlisle and Indiana Legal Services executive director Jon Laramore, who both had children participating in the ceremony. Laura Briggs, clerk of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, and Robert Trgovich, clerk for the Northern Indiana District Court, administered the oaths for their respective courts.

As the new lawyers stood to take the oaths of the courts, many family and friends in the audience took photos and videos with their cameras and cellphones.

“’New occasions teach new duties,’” Senior Judge Sarah Evans Barker of the Southern Indiana District Court told the attorneys while quoting from James Russell Lowell’s poem, ‘The Present Crisis.’ “Today, for you is a new occasion and new duties are coming to you.”
