IS IT TRUE APRIL 3, 2018

19

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE yesterday City Councilman and Finance Chairmen Jonathan Weaver announced that members of the local Teamsters told him and other Council members they are in negotiations with the Winnecke Administration to receive 2% raise in this calendar year?

IS IT TRUE during the 2018 budget hearings City Council approved a 1% pay raise for all the public employees except members of the Fire and Police Departments who received a 2% increase?

IS IT TRUE Councilmen and Finance Chairman Jonathan Weaver is upset because the Teamsters and the Mayor have been quietly negotiating a 2% salary increase for this budget year without his knowledge? …Mr. Weaver claim he hasn’t seen a copy of the proposed budget contract amendment that will allow the Mayor to give all the local Teamsters employed by the City a 2% pay increase this year?

IS IT TRUE we find it  extremely interesting that the Finance Chairmen and City Councilman is publicly asking “where’s the transparency?” …ever since Mr. Weaver has been severing on City Council been asking him and his sidekick Missy Mosby “where’s the transparency?”  …we consider this to be a developing story?

IS IT TRUE all we can say to Mr. Weaver is that “taxpayers are getting sick and tired of the political promises and games of elected and appointed officials”?

IS IT TRUE a CCO reader sent this to us which we found interesting? …I  talked to a to a homeless man recently and asked him how he ended up this way? He said, “Up until last week, I still had it all.  I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had HDTV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library?” …he also added that “I was working on my MBA online.  I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage?” …I felt sorry for him, so I asked, “What happened?  Drugs?  Alcohol?  Divorce?”  …he said “Oh no, nothing like that,” he said.  “No, no… I was just paroled?”

IS IT TRUE some feel that Its time to challenge the out of control nepotism and political patronage practices at the Civic Center?

IS IT TRUE we urge you to attend the “Guns and Hoses XI” event this coming April 7, 2018, at the Ford Center because it’s for a worthy causes?

Todays “Readers Poll” question is: Do you feel that the Evansville City Council should give $500,000 of Federal and State tax dollars to EHO Housing without knowing the findings of the Forensic audit?

COMMENTARY: CONGRESSMAN BUCSHON SHOULD ATTEND THE COURIER AND PRESS AND WNIN TV DEBATE

4

We were taken aback by the incumbent 8th District Congressmen Dr. Larry Bucshon decision not participate in a public debate sponsored by the Evansville Courier and Press and WNIN TV.

In a recent interview with the Courier and Press, the Congressmen stated; “I’m probably not going to have any debates prior to the primary”. He also said; “I have over 90 percent name ID in my district, and my constituents pretty much know where I stand on the issues.”

We feel that Congressman Larry Bucshon decision not to debate his primary opponent is a disrespectful gesture towards the voters of Indiana’s 8th Congressional district. By dodging the only scheduled public primary debate he lost the opportunity to defend his past voting record and also confront his primary opponent, Dr. Richard Moss stance on issues that are beneficial to the voters of the 8th District.

It seems that Congressman Bucshon feels that attending a dinner engagement in Sullivan Indiana and his alleged 90% name recognition in the 8th District is all that he needs to win the upcoming Republican primary. The voters of the 8th Congressional District could care less about his name recognition but are more concerned about his voting record during the last two years?

The voters of the 8th Congressional District would like to see Congressman Bucshon defend his views and votes on Funded Abortions, Sanctuary Cities, Amnesty, Re-structure of Obamacare, The Trillion-Dollar Deficit Spending Bill That Was Tacked On The  $1.3 trillion Omnibus Bill, The Building And The Funding Of The Mexican “Wall”, North Korea Challenges, Future Education Funding, National Defense Spending to name a few issues worthy of public debate.

Perhaps the Congressman have lost sight that taxpayers are his employer and pay his salary.  When an elected official participates in a public debate it’s similar to that of a job performance review. A public debate gives the taxpayers a chance to review the elected official job performance and determining whether he should be rehired or fired.

Many people feel that Congressman Bucshon showed arrogance and contempt towards the 8th District voters by cowardly ducking this debate. By doing so the voters are now considering him as just another elitist Washington insider and a career politician.

Oh, if Congressmen Bucshon would have attended the Evansville Courier and Press and WNIN TV sponsored debate he would have faced a well prepared and articulate Richard Moss MD, a self-described constitutional conservative.

Gail Riecken Comments On The “State Government Isn’t Working Article by John Krull

1

by Gail Riecken, City-County Observer Statehouse Editor

If you missed John Krull’s recent article on State government where he comments that State government isn’t working, take a minute and read it at: https://city-countyobserver.com/commentary-a-state-that-works-a-government-that-doesnt/

Krull’s comments about our State government are on target. He agrees that people are working and Indiana seems to be doing well, but that it isn’t because State government is functioning well.

And, to be accurate not everybody is doing well. Krull notes that many Hoosiers at the “bottom of the middle class “ are working more hours and still are at risk of falling into poverty.

Does the State government have a role in changing the direction for struggling Hoosiers? Yes.

The State has the responsibility to develop ways that help workers get better jobs and jobs that pay a living wage. If there is one accomplishment where State government functioned fairly well this past session, workforce development for young people is it.

Gov. Holcomb and the legislature worked together to ensure a pilot program in southeastern Indiana where training for local jobs is integrated into secondary education. It involves a “coalition” of school corporations and seems a way to help more rural areas with their workforce needs.

HEA 1398 (PL 190) comes with many challenges and the bill certainly could have used more collaboration before voting it in, but we need to give those involved the chance to work through the many concerns and questions related to the concept. (The organizers would do well to ask EVSC about their successes with the technical school on Lynch Road.)

Does State government have to function well for its workers to earn more and for business to succeed? Yes.

If there isn’t a growing, trained workforce coming through the “pipeline”, businesses will have to look elsewhere for their workers and workers will move to other, more promising work environments.

So, on this topic, even though Krull and I agree State government isn’t working well, I give the Governor and State legislature this last session kudos for progress toward an accepted statewide education model training young people for better Hoosier jobs.

Evansville Sears to Close Sunday, April 8th

In less than a week another big brick and mortar store will close its doors in the Tri-State. Officials say the Evansville Sears at the Washington Square Mall is set to close Sunday, April 8th.

Local Real Estate agent, Joe Kiefer says the building is still on the market and they are actively looking for tenants.

This Sears location is one of dozens of stores around the country that will be closing in the next few months.

Kiefer says he would consider dividing up space, but he would like to lease the property rather than sell it.

To see a complete list of closings click here.
