INDIANAPOLIS — Republic Airways announced Thursday that it will open a U.S.-based aviation training school in Indianapolis called Leadership In Flight Training Academy.

LIFT Academy, which will be located at Indianapolis International Airport, will train hundreds of students and professional aviators each year. Republic is opening LIFT Academy to make a career as a commercial pilot more accessible to all by reducing the high cost of flight training.

“We are investing in adventure-seeking, aspiring aviators and offering them a world-class, innovative training program and a guaranteed, post-graduation pathway to a career at Republic,” said Matt Koscal, senior vice president of Republic Airways, in a news release.

This training program will bring 600 new full-time jobs to the state by 2028. Gov. Eric Holcomb said in a written statement that Republic’s investment in Indiana is a “big win” for the state and the workforce.

“Today’s announcement means new jobs, new life on the airport property, and new investment in the people of Indiana,” Holcomb said. “We’re full steam ahead to ensure Indiana’s talented Hoosiers are equipped with the skills they need for a 21st-century economy.”

LIFT Academy will be one of the largest aviation schools in the U.S. with the potential enrollment of 300-400 students each year, helping with the large need for more pilots in Indiana and nationwide.

The academy will also team up with Vincennes University to offer training to students in the flight training program.

“Today’s announcement creates an entry point for hundreds of individuals to pursue a successful career in aviation,” said Mayor of Indianapolis Joe Hogsett in a statement. “With cutting-edge technology to train its students and the infrastructure of Indy’s world-renowned airport, this new training campus will have an impact on our community for generations.”

Student enrollment opened Thursday. Aviation classes start in September.

USI to consolidate Community Health Centers

0

The University of Southern Indiana announced plans to consolidate its three Community Health Centers in Evansville into one primary location beginning September 1, 2018. Glenwood Leadership Academy, which was the first community health center opened by USI on January 9, 2012, will continue to provide patient care. The Cedar Hall Community School location will be open one Wednesday a month and the Lodge Community School location will be closed.

Dr. Ann White, dean of USI’s College of Nursing and Health Professions, said the decision was based on a lack of continued grant funding. USI has been supplementing the operation of the three centers since the five-year, $1.2 million grant funding for the project from the Health Resources and Services Administration at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ran out in the spring of 2017 and was not renewed. In order to maintain these services, the University is seeking a sustainable funding source.

“We remain committed to providing primary care services to our patients, but with the lack of grant funding, it made the most sense for us to consolidate our efforts at Glenwood,” said White.

Staff have been notified of the changes and patients will receive notification letters in the coming days. Staff were offered employment at the Glenwood health center or through the College of Nursing and

DCS launching online background check portal Monday

IL for www.theindianalawyer.com

The Indiana Department of Child Services will begin using an online background check program next week, a change the department expects will expedite new employee processing by about two weeks.

DCS will launch its online background check portal on Monday, when it will begin using a new online program to screen teachers and other volunteers who want to work with children. The portal will replace traditional pen-and-paper background check procedures and is expected to decrease the turnaround time from 21 to 10 days.

“Reduced wait time is paramount to helping potential employers make sound decisions about applicants who want to work with youth,” Andria Hoying, DCS deputy director of placement support and compliance, said in a Thursday statement. “Moving the system online helps us evaluate history in a more timely fashion in order to assure the safety of children.”

When an agency enters a request for employee and volunteer information, the portal will send the applicant an email notifying them that a request for information has been made. The applicant can then log in to the portal and enter the requested information, which will be cross-referenced with local law enforcement history, sex offender records and previous DCS records related to child abuse and neglect. Applicants are also fingerprinted, but prints are not routed through the portal.

“Organizations of all types make requests to DCS to verify child protective histories,” Cindy Hewett, the department’s background check program manager, said in a statement. Hewett also noted Hoying’s department completed nearly 100,000 background check forms last year.

Homeowner arrested on drug dealing charge during investigation into to home invasion robbery that left suspect dead

0

After finding evidence of drug dealing, Evansville Police arrested the homeowner who was targeted by a home invasion robbery suspect. Rickey D. Boyd, 48, was arrested for dealing marijuana.
The robbery attempt happened at 1713 Coker around 11:45am on Saturday. The suspect in the robbery, Eric J Thomas, died after being shot by Boyd. During the investigation, police recovered approximately 1/2 pound of marijuana from Boyd’s vehicle. Other items were found at the scene that indicated Boyd was dealing marijuana. It appears that Boyd was specifically targeted.
Boyd is on Federal Parole from a previous drug dealing arrest in Texas. He is in Vanderburgh County Jail. The investigation is ongoing.
