USI needs a win in the last three conference matches to clinch a spot in the GLVC Tournament and will likely need at least two wins to earn a first round home game depending upon tie breakers.

Eagles sweep last week: The Screaming Eagles (8-5-2, 6-3-1 GLVC) swept last week’s games, posting a 3-1 victory over Maryville University and a 1-0 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Hopkins climbs in USI record book: USI senior goalkeeper Emily Hopkins is climbing the Eagles’ all-time ranking for shutouts, moving to third all-time with 16.3 shutouts in three-plus seasons. She also ranks fourth all-time in saves (256) and is currently third in goals against average (1.25 through October 14). Hopkins has four shutouts, 65 saves and a 1.21 GAA this fall.

Winter holds the lead in scoring: Sophomore forward Maggie Winter holds the Eagles’ lead in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Junior forward Emilie Blomenkamp, who is tied with Winter for the team lead with four goals; sophomore midfielder Rachel Gray; and sophomore forward Taylor McCormick are tied for second with eight points each. Senior forward Ryley Hancock has the team lead in assists with four.

Schoenstein in his third year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his third season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 25-19-8 mark and back-to-back GLVC Tournament appearances.

USI vs. Rockhurst: Rockhurst leads the all-time series with USI, 12-1-0, dating back to 2005. The Hawks also have had the upper hand the last five meetings, winning all five, including a 2-1 win last year over the Eagles at home.

Hawks in 2018: The Hawks are 8-5-1 overall and 7-3-0 in the GLVC after sweeping last weekend with a 2-0 win over Lewis and a 2-1 win over the University of Indianapolis.

USI vs. William Jewell: William Jewell leads the all-time series, 4-3-0, since the Cardinals joined the GLVC in 2011. USI won last year’s match-up in Kansas City, Missouri, 1-0.

Cardinals in 2018: William Jewell, which plays at Bellarmine University on Friday before visiting USI, is 7-7-1 overall and 4-6-0 in the GLVC after losing twice last weekend and losing three of its last four matches.

USI versus Rockhurst: Rockhurst leads the all-time series with USI, 20-3-1, dating back to 1997. The Hawks also have the lead in the last five matches, winning all five, including last year’s match that ended in a 1-0 Rockhurst victory in Kansas City, Missouri.

USI Predicted To Place Fourth By GLVC Coaches

0

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team is predicted to place fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2018-19 by the conference head coaches. USI was 20-11 overall and an 11-7 in the GLVC a year ago, earning an eighth-straight trip to the conference’s post-season tournament.

The Screaming Eagles, who collected 141 points in the poll, return six players and three starters in 2018-19. USI senior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana), a preseason All-American, leads the returning players with 19.7 points per contest.

The prediction of a USI fourth-place finish comes in the first non-division GLVC preseason poll since 2004-05 when the league was comprised of 11 teams.

Bellarmine University (29-3, 16-2 GLVC), the defending GLVC champion, was awarded the top spot with 181 points and 12 of the 13 first place votes. Drury University (21-8, 13-5 GLVC), which won a share of the West Division last year, was second with 160 points, while Lewis University (15-14, 10-8 GLVC) was slotted in third with 157 points and the final two first place votes. The University of Indianapolis (19-9, 12-6 GLVC) rounded out the top five with 138 votes.

Truman State University (20-11, 13-5), which shared the West Division title last year with Drury, earned 118 points in the poll to place sixth. The league coaches closed out the top-half of the GLVC with William Jewell College (20-9, 10-8), which garnered 101 points for seventh place.

The bottom half of the GLVC poll was comprised of Maryville University (20-8, 12-6 GLVC; 94 points); Rockhurst University (14-14, 7-11 GLVC; 91 points); University of Missouri-St. Louis (14-13, 9-9 GLVC; 74 points); McKendree University (12-16, 3-15 GLVC; 64 points); University of Illinois Springfield (14-15, 6-12 GLVC: 61 points); Quincy University (9-18, 5-13 GLVC; 48 points); and Missouri University of Science & Technology (3-23, 1-17 GLVC: 28 points).

The 2018-19 USI campaign begins with exhibition games November 1 at Indiana University and November 3 at Butler University. The regular season campaign tips off November 9-10 with the GLVC/GMAC Crossover in Springfield Illinois. The home schedule begins with Martin Methodist College November 17 in the Physical Activities Center.

TROPICANA EVANSVILLE TEAM MEMBERS DONATE $500 TO ST. JUDE’S

0

n a commitment to civic support and outreach, Tropicana Evansville encourages activities that allow employees to contribute to local charities.

“It feels good to give and we are pleased to offer fundraising opportunities to our employees,” Executive Director of Human Resources Bill Plahn explains.  “Traditionally, we set aside two days each month as ‘Jeans Days’.”

On Jeans Days, departmental dress codes are relaxed so that employees may donate to a pre-selected charity thereby earning the right to come to work casually clad in blue denim.

For September, the company proudly announces a $500 gift to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through combined contributions of Team Members and Tropicana Evansville.

St. Jude’s is the well-known Memphis, Tennessee, pediatric cancer research and treatment hospital founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962.  While there is no charge to the patient, operational costs for the hospital run about $2.4 million per day.

In October, Tropicana Evansville employees will be wearing jeans to support It Takes a Village Canine Rescue.
