Statement from UE Athletics and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer

0

The University of Evansville Athletics Department and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer have released the following statement and timeline of events in regards to the column written this week by Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post Dispatch regarding former Aces men’s basketball player Dru Smith and his transfer to the University of Missouri.

Current NCAA rules in regards to men’s basketball transfers dictate that the student-athlete is required to sit out for a year in residency prior to being eligible to compete at the new institution.  There is currently no active legislation being proposed for this rule to change.  If the student-athlete wanted to seek immediate eligibility, it would be incumbent on the new institution to submit a waiver to the NCAA with supporting documentation.

On Tuesday, October 9th, 2018, the University of Missouri compliance department reached out to the University of Evansville compliance department wishing to discuss their intention to submit a waiver to the NCAA to request the immediate eligibility of Dru Smith.  UM specifically asked if UE would support the claim that Dru would meet the “run off’ standard regarding the new coaching staff.

The “run off” standard is when a coaching staff communicates to the student-athlete that they will not have their financial aid renewed and they would not have a place on the team.

UE responded that we did not believe the “run off” standard would apply given the fact that Dru voluntarily withdrew from the program on April 3rdand that the University of Evansville had offered to renew his financial aid and the new coaching staff had offered a roster spot to Dru.

On Thursday, October 25th, after filing the waiver with the NCAA, the University of Missouri compliance department again reached out to the University of Evansville compliance department regarding the waiver. UM inquired if UE had ever communicated to Dru our intentions to NOT renew his scholarship.

UE responded by pointing out that in a meeting on March 14th with UE Senior Associate AD Sarah Solinsky and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer, all of the student-athletes with the UE men’s basketball program would be given the opportunity to sign their financial aid agreements for the following year securing their scholarship regardless of the coaching change.

In subsequent conversations once the new coaching staff was hired, all of the student-athletes were again presented with the opportunity to retain their scholarships and solidify their place in the program.

The UM compliance director then alluded to the claim that the new coaching staff did not directly engage in communications with Dru. UE responded that they could also not support that claim, as UE head men’s basketball coach Walter McCarty, his staff and the entire athletic department went to great lengths to communicate with all of the student-athletes throughout the transition. The student-athletes were included in the hiring process and Dru Smith was outspoken throughout that process in his support of the hiring of Coach McCarty.

On Thursday, March 29th, six days after the announcement of the hiring of Coach McCarty, Dru Smith sent an email to Director of Athletics Mark Spencer informing him that he had made his decision to transfer.  Smith’s exact reasoning was “mainly because the opportunities that I have are too hard to pass up.”

The University of Evansville Athletics Department factually answered the questions submitted by the University of Missouri compliance department in preparation for the waiver request on Dru Smith’s behalf.  UE declined to support inaccurate claims that represented the University of Evansville, the athletic department, Coach McCarty and his staff in a negative light.

Outside of the communication that is outlined above, the University of Evansville has not had any communication or impact on the waiver that was submitted by the University of Missouri to the NCAA.

ABOUT BELLAMY BROTHERS

Howard and David continue to prove that the trail they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique astheir music itself—music that is now celebrating more than 40 years of success. The road thatstarted on the pop music charts in the ‘70’s, took a winding turn into country music in the ‘80’s,paving the way for duos to come, such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich andThe Judds. “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),” originallyscrawled on a dinner napkin by David, rocketed them to the top of the country charts the way“Let Your Love Flow,” had done in the pop market just a few years earlier. It proved to be thefirst of a string of 14 No. 1 singles in the U.S. alone. They’re the only U.S. country music actwho’ve toured in India, Sri Lanka, New Caledonia and Qatar. The Bellamy Brothers hold the record in both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association Awards (CMA) for the most duo nominations. EPD Officer injured during investigation into suspicious person at Fairlawn Elementary School

0

An Evansville Police Officer was injured while investigating a complaint of a suspicious person at Fairlawn Elementary School. The officer was sent to the school around 6:50 on Wednesday morning when a school employee called to report LOGAN STIDHAM was at the front doors acting suspicious. The employee asked Stidham why he was at the school and he replied he had a child in daycare there. The employee knew that to be false and called 911.
The responding officer located Stidham near the school and attempted to question him. Stidham was uncooperative and would not comply with the officers instructions or identify himself.
When the officer tired to handcuff Stidham, he pulled away. The officer deployed his TASER, but it was unsuccessful in subduing Stidham. A physical altercation between the officer and Stidham resulted in the two wrestling on the ground. As Stidham resisted, the officer was able to call for assistance.
Stidham was able to gain control of the officer’s TASER and discharged it as he held it against the officer’s face.
Stidham lost control of the TASER, but ended up on top of the officer. While pinned on his back, the officer was able to partially control Stidham’s hands and wrist. He was able to do so until another officer arrived.
Stidham refused to let the officer up. Another TASER was used, but was also ineffective. The second officer then used physical force to stop Stidham’s actions. As other officers arrived, Stidham continued to ignore instructions. Additional force was used. Stidham was eventually taken into custody.
The officer received facial injuries during the assault. He was treated at a local hospital and released. Stidham was examined at a local hospital and then booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. He is charged with:
Battery with a Deadly Weapon

Customers can save nearly $200 annually on energy bills by reducing vampire load

0

This Halloween, Vectren is reminding customers they can save nearly $200 per year on their electric bills by cutting “vampire” load. The average home has up to 40 devices contributing to vampire load, often called phantom load, which refers to the amount of electricity that’s being drained by equipment when it’s off or in standby mode.

Any device that has a remote control or instant-on capability is slowly draining power. Examples of these energy vampires include Blu-Ray and DVD players, digital cable boxes, DVRs, microwaves, video gaming systems, alarm clocks, cell phones that are fully charged, computers, televisions and any device with a digital display.

“Most people don’t realize just how easy it is to shave significant dollars off your electric bill by ridding your home of these energy vampires,” said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana – South. “The individual vampire loads range from a fraction of a watt to more than 45 watts, and these electric appliances may account for as much as 10 percent of the total electric bill even when switched off.”

For instance, mobile phone chargers that are left plugged in after your phone is disconnected consume .26 watts of energy — and 2.24 watts when your phone is fully charged and still connected. According to the Department of Energy, 45 “vampire” watts feeding off of your electric power bill for a year totals nearly 400 kilowatt hours – enough energy to operate a new, 21 cubic-feet refrigerator for nearly one year.

Combat these energy vampires in the following ways:

  • Plug all components of a home entertainment system into a power strip and turn it off when the equipment is not in use. Anything plugged into the strip is then truly turned off.
  • Computers and their peripherals should be placed on a Smart Strip, which automatically powers down a computer’s peripherals, such as speakers, modems and printers, once the computer is turned off. Smart Strips range from $25 to $40. Essentially, a Smart Strip detects when the primary appliance in a group has been turned off and then electronically powers-off the associated peripherals.
  • Unplug devices that are rarely used as well as chargers that aren’t in use. Unplug items such as televisions, toaster ovens and other well-used appliances before leaving on vacation or more frequently as desired.
  • Curb idle time by simply setting your computer to sleep mode, or stopping a game and powering down your video game console instead of leaving it paused for a prolonged period.
  • Buy energy-efficient appliances or those bearing the ENERGY STAR® label. ENERGY STAR-qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10 to 50 percent less energy than standard models. Find a list of products at EnergyStar.gov.
