Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb will deliver his 2019 State of the State address on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, to a joint session of the Indiana General Assembly in the House of Representatives chamber. The address will begin at 7 p.m. ET and is expected to fit in a 30-minute window.

Eagles rocket by the Hawks, 78-56

 University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball rocketed by Quincy University, 78-56, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. The Screaming Eagles go to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC, while the Hawks are 7-9, 1-5 GLVC.

The Eagles took the lead 5-4 on a jumper by senior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) at 17:52 of the opening half and never looked by before taking a 37-29 lead into the intermission. Stein would score 14 points in the opening half, hitting five of his first six shots, as the Eagles led for over 18 of the first 20 minutes.

USI led by as many as 10 points twice during the first stanza before settling for the eight-point, 37-29, advantage at the break. The Eagles shot 50 percent in the first half (15-30), 33.3 percent (3-9) from long range.

After scoring the last four points of the first half, the Eagles scored the first 10 points of the second half for a 14-0 run to take a commanding 47-29 lead with 16:44 left to play. USI was a blistering five-of-seven from the field during the 14-0 run and was led by sophomore forward Emmanuel Little (Indianapolis, Indiana), who scored have of the points in the run.

The Eagles continued to extend the margin to as many as 28 points, 68-40, on a three-point bomb by sophomore guard Mateo Rivera (Indianapolis, Indiana) with 7:49 to play. Quincy would shrink the USI lead to 18 points, 74-56, in the final minutes before the Eagles closed out the 78-56 victory.

As a team, USI shot 51.7 percent from the field (31-60), 36.8 percent from beyond the arc (7-19), and 50 percent from the stripe (9-18). The Eagles also won the battle on the glass with a 31-29 margin.

Individually, Stein led five players in double-digits with 19 points, adding eight in the final 20 minutes. Little followed with 15 points and completed his fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Rivera, sophomore forward Josh Price (Indianapolis, Indiana), and senior guard/forward Nate Hansen (Evansville, Indiana) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points each in the victory.

USI travels to the far west part of the GLVC next week with a visit to Rockhurst University Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and William Jewell University Saturday at 3 p.m. Game coverage information for USI Men’s Basketball can be found on GoUSIEagles.com.

Evansville Water and Sewer Utilities Acquires Park At 4th And Main Street For $450,000

One of the key components of the Evansville Downtown Master Plan Update is moving forward with the installation of fencing around the park at 4th and Main streets. Fence Pros began enclosing the astro turf covered park today to ensure public safety and in preparation for site work this winter to stabilize the infrastructure and remediate possible issues underground.

The park property was acquired from a private owner this year by the Evansville Water & Sewer Utility as part of a land exchange with the Evansville Department of Parks and Recreation for Sunrise Park on Water Works Road. Sunrise Park, where Kids Kingdom playground is located, is adjacent to the East Side Waste Water Treatment facility on land that is needed to comply with federally mandated sewer infrastructure improvements.

The Master Plan Update envisions a “thriving Main Street” as the “core of downtown” that can become more active and vital with the addition of local and independent retail shops and restaurants. The park at 4th and Main streets will serve as an anchor and focal point for activities.

“The first step is to make sure the area is safe and then prepare the site,” said Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. Next, the Parks Department will work with the downtown Economic Improvement District to develop more specific plans for the green space.

ETFCU Returns Nearly $4 Million To Members Via Checking Account Programs

Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union paid out nearly $4 million to its members through consumer checking counts alone in 2018.

The $3,797,732 returned to members through ETFCU’s premier checking accounts represent a 61 percent increase over the 2017 total. That included a return of 3% APY on balances of up to $20,000 for members who use Vertical Checking (up from a maximum of $15,000 in 2017); reward points on debit card purchases plus bonus ScoreCard reward points each month to Platinum Rewards Checking members, who can redeem for brand-name merchandise, travel, gift cards and more; and ATM-fee reimbursement anywhere worldwide up to $15 on both accounts.

“Our mission is to provide the best value for our members,” ETFCU President and CEO Bill Schirmer wrote in a letter to members. “We do this through innovative products and services that provide real benefits on a monthly basis.”

Members received $2,299,956 in interest on Vertical Checking, $1,099,583 in redeemable points for Platinum Rewards Checking, and $393,193 in ATM-fee reimbursements.

ETFCU, which was recognized as Best in State for Banking and Credit Unions by Forbes in 2018, has grown to more than 205,000 members with assets of $1.8 billion. Schirmer was honored with the Indiana Credit Union League’s Professional Achievement Award in 2018, marking a first for an Evansville-based credit union leader.

The credit union operates six offices in Evansville, along with Indiana locations in Fort Branch, Mount Vernon, Newburgh, Princeton and Vincennes, and Kentucky locations in Henderson and Owensboro (2). An office will open in Washington, Indiana, in the spring.

FJ Reitz High School Boosters Plan Two 100th Anniversary Events

FJ Reitz High School Big Blue Boosters continues its leadership of the school’s historic 100th anniversary commemoration.  This winter two events are planned.
On Tuesday, February 15, at Willard Library Conference Room, from 6 until 7:45 pm, Boosters are hosting a panel discussion on integration at FJ Reitz.  The period covered will be the 1950s through the mid 1980s with personal reflection.  Moderator will be retired educator Patricia Wisdom. On Saturday, March 16, in FJ Reitz Big Blue Boosters will host a 100th anniversary Re-dedication Brunch in the school cafeteria. Doors open at 10 am.  Brunch is served at 10:30, priced at $12.  History tours of the school will be offered and an exhibit of memorabilia.  Retired teachers are especially sought and encouraged to attend.  The event is ADA accessible. Big Blue Boosters is a 35-year-old non-profit supporting extracurricular activities at FJ Reitz High School.  In the last 10 years alone the group has raised and donated more than a quarter million dollars for student programs and teams. Since 2015, Big Blue has assumed a mantle of leadership for the school’s 2018-2019 100th anniversary events and fund campaign.
