Walmart Theft/ Car Chase On The East Side

Evansville Police arrested two men following a car chase on the east side. The incident began around 11:35am on Friday when officers were sent the Walmart at 401 N Burkhardt for two shoplifters.

Officers arrived as Jason Wilkinson (32) and Wesley Sellner (23) were leaving in a silver Dodge Charger. Police later determined Wilkinson was the driver. Officers tried to pull them over, but they fled in the car. Officers pursued them through the area of Virginia and Cross Point until Wilkinson’s driving became too aggressive. Due to Wilkinson’s driving, the pursuit was terminated a supervisor. 

About one minute after the pursuit ended, a citizen called 911 about a crash in the 1400 block of N. Royal Ave. The silver dodge had been wrecked and the two men had ran into a field. A witness stopped Sellner in the field and kept him there until police arrived. An officer found Wilkinson a short time later. Both were arrested without further incident.

Police confirmed the two men were the shoplifting suspects from Walmart. Police also determined the car had been reported stolen in Chandler IN on January 15th. Wilkinson had an active misdemeanor warrant and Sellner had an active felony warrant. 

Both men will be booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on multiple charges related to these events.

Gov. Holcomb Names Wimer As New IDVA Director

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb today announced he has selected Dennis Wimer as the new director of the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

“I have directed Dennis to make any and all necessary changes to restore the confidence of the department and the trust of Hoosier veterans,” Gov. Holcomb said. “Dennis is a strong leader with a passion to serve. His experience and expertise, which combines military service with a deep knowledge of the inner workings of state and federal programs, have prepared him to transform the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs.”

Wimer served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years on active duty, rising to the rank of captain. He served as a C-141B navigator and his last assignment was the Operations Officer of a C-141B Special Operations unit.

His experience includes positions at Butler University and LADS Consulting, a family-owned civil engineering consulting firm. From 2011 to 2017, he worked for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in various roles including Associate Chief Operating Officer.

During his time at DWD, he led multiple federal and state workforce programs, including Jobs for Veterans state grants, Jobs for Hoosiers and Hoosier Initiative to Reemploy Ex-offenders (HIRE) program. Wimer was a board member of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) and selected to serve as the chair of the NASWA Veterans Affairs Committee. He was invited by the U.S. Secretary of Labor to speak at the 2016 U.S. Department of Labor Salute to Veterans.

Wimer earned his Bachelor of Arts from Purdue University and his Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He will begin his new position on Jan. 28.

Two Suspects Arrested in Triple Homicide

JANUARY 18TH, 2019 JOYLYN BUKOVAC KENTUCKY, OWENSBORO

Owensboro police have identified the victims and the suspects in Thursday’s triple homicide. The shooting happened around 11:30 Thursday morning on Audubon Avenue.

Police say the two suspects in the case are now behind bars and facing charges. Neighbors say these arrests make them feel at ease.

“I was afraid to go to sleep last but I made it through the night,” says Margie Ashworth, a concerned neighbor.

Owensboro police say they believe this is an isolated issue.

“We were able to make multiple arrests in reference to the homicide yesterday on Audubon Avenue. We were able to charge Arnette B. Baines, 30 years old of Owensboro, and Cylar Shemwell 31, also of Owensboro. Both have been charged with three counts of murder and one count of an assault on the 1st degree,” says Officer Andrew Boggess.

The victims have been identified as 43-year-old Jay Sowders, 35-year-old Robert Smith Jr., and 18-year-old Christopher Carie. and 35-year-old Carmen Vanegas who is recovering in the hospital.

Officials confirm three children live in the home where the shooting happened, but thankfully they were in school when the shooting happened.

Police say they believe the victims knew the shooters, but the investigation is far from over.

“It’s still obviously very early in the investigation. There are still search warrants being executed, still, people of interest that we would like to talk to. We do not have another suspect at this point that we have identified, however, like I said it’s very early; lots of evidence to come in so it is entirely possible there could be additional charges either for these two individuals or we could have another person charged subsequent to this investigation.”

AFTER MUCH THOUGHT AND PRAYER, I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO SEEK RE-ELECTION AS EVANSVILLE’S CITY COUNCILWOMAN 4TH WARD.  MY FIRST CAMPAIGN WAS BASED ON THE SLOGAN “A NEW BEGINNING” AND OVER THE LAST 2 DECADES MANY THINGS HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED.  

WHILE SERVING AS YOUR REPRESENTATIVE I HAVE TRULY ENJOYED WORKING FOR THE 4TH WARD AND THE CITY OF EVANSVILLE.  I HAVE TRIED TO BE A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS.   I HAVE NOT ALWAYS TAKEN THE EASY POLITICAL PATH AND AT TIMES HAVE TAKEN POSITIONS SOME HAVE DISAGREED.   WHILE I HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY FOR THE 4TH WARD IT IS QUITE EVIDENT I LOVE MY COMMUNITY.

Eagles roll by the Hawks, 78-59

 University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball took control from the opening basket and rolled to a 78-59 victory over Rockhurst University Thursday evening in Kansas City, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles go to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the GLVC, while the Hawks are 10-6, 4-2 GLVC.

From the first two points of the game by USI junior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell (Bowling Green, Kentucky), the Eagles flew out to a commanding lead during the first half. USI led by as many as 16 points, 28-12, before taking a 36-22 advantage into the intermission.

Senior guard Alex Stein (Evansville, Indiana) paced the Eagles during the opening half with 12 points, while senior guard/forward Nate Hansen (Evansville, Indiana) followed with nine points on three-of-four from beyond the three-point arc.

In the second half, the Eagles continued to cruise and extended the halftime lead to as many as 19 points three times before the Hawks made a run in the final three minutes. Rockhurts would shrink the USI lead to 13 points twice (70-57 and 72-59), but a Hansen three-point bomb ended the Hawk’s run as the Eagles closed out the 78-59 victory.

Stein added 12 second half points and finished the game with a game-high 26 points. He was a blistering seven-of-nine from the field, three-of-three from downtown, and nine-of-12 from the line. The seven-of-nine from the field bolstered Stein’s field goal percentage over the last three games to 67.6 percent (23-34).

Caldwell, Hansen, and sophomore forward Emmanuel Little (Indianapolis, Indiana) followed Stein in the scoring column with 12 points each. Little, who scored six of USI’s first eight points of the game, also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for his team-best fifth double-double of the season.

USI concludes its quick two-game trip to the GLVC’s west coast when it visits William Jewell College Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest in Liberty, Missouri. The Cardinals saw their record go to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the GLVC after falling to top-ranked Bellarmine University, 85-65, at home tonight.

The Eagles lead the all-time series versus William Jewell, 5-1, since the Cardinals joined the league in 2010-11. USI lost last year’s match-up, 94-81, and was by senior Hansen and forward DayJar Dickson led the Eagles with 18 and 17 points, a respectively Stein and Little rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15 points and 11 points.

Eagles ride dominate first half to GLVC win over Rockhurst

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball used a dominating first-half effort to cruise past host Rockhurst University, 86-64, in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Thursday evening.

The Screaming Eagles (12-4, 5-1 GLVC) used a 19-2 first-quarter run and a 16-7 second-quarter surge to go into the break with a comfortable 53-24 halftime advantage. USI shot 56.7 percent (18-31) from the field in the opening half as it essentially put the game out of reach with 20 minutes to play.

USI’s lead expanded to as much as 33 early in the third period as it coasted to its second straight win.

The Hawks (5-9, 1-5 GLVC) cut USI’s lead to 24 late in the third quarter, but an 11-4 run that began with a three-pointer by sophomore forward Imani Guy(Columbus, Indiana) extended USI’s lead to 78-47 with just over six minutes to play.

19-2 run
USI used a 19-2 run that lasted the final six minutes of the opening period as it turned a 9-9 tie into a commanding 28-11 lead heading into the second period. The Eagles went 6-of-9 from the field and got scoring contributions from seven different players during the run. USI held the Hawks to just 1-of-9 shooting and five turnovers during the final six minutes of the opening period.

16-7 run
USI went 7-of-9 from the field and got three-pointers from senior guard Alex Davidson (Salem, Indiana) and Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) as turned a 37-17 lead into a 29-point halftime advantage. Davidson and DeHart each had five points in the run, while junior guard Ashley Johnson(Louisville, Kentucky) added four points.

Season highs
USI scored a season-high 86 points against Rockhurst and shot a season-best 55.4 percent (31-56) from the field, marking the second straight game with a shooting percentage of 50.0 percent or better.

Key stats
USI dominated the paint, outscoring the Hawks 46-20 in the lane and earning a 39-25 rebounding advantage.

Statistical leaders
Davidson led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and three steals, while DeHart finished with a career-high 18 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. Johnson tallied 14 points and a game-high five assists, with just one turnover, while Guy tallied 12 points and four rebounds.

Senior forward/center Mikayla Rowan (Brazil, Indiana) rounded out the Eagles’ season-high five double-digit scorers with 11 points, while junior guard Madeline Ronshausen had 14 points to lead Rockhurst.

Up next
The Eagles conclude their two-game road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Liberty, Missouri, to take on William Jewell College in a GLVC bout. The Cardinals (9-5, 3-3 GLVC) defeated Bellarmine University, 76-61, Thursday evening for their third straight win and sixth victory in their last seven outings.

Right to Life of Southwest Indiana annual bus trip to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

The March for Life, which is Friday, January 18, 2019 is the nation’s largest annual pro-life event where hundreds of thousands of Americans will attend.  January 22, 1973 is ingrained in the minds of pro-lifers because on that infamous historic day the Supreme Court invalidated 50 state laws and made abortion legal and available on demand throughout the United States in the now-infamous decisions in Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton.

The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary every year since 1973 is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand.  Over 60 MILLION unborn children have been aborted in America since 1973.
