Gilda’s Club, A Cancer Support Community – Celebrating 5 Year Birthday!

Open house set for Wednesday, February 6, 2019 between 4-6pm

Gilda’s Club 5 year birthday party will be Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Gilda’s Club Evansville, 5740 Vogel Road, Evansville, IN 47715.   The celebration is open to the public.  There will be a timeline of pictures and inspiration highlighting the impact Gilda’s Club has brought to our community over the last 5 years. 

Gilda’s Club Evansville’s mission is to serve as a community of caring individuals that provide social, emotional and educational support to anyone impacted by cancer.   100% locally funded, together we share a vision that no one should face cancer alone. 

Gilda’s Club Evansville is an affiliate of the Cancer Support Community (CSC), a global organization providing psychosocial cancer support to tens of thousands of people through a network of nearly 50 local affiliates, more than 100 satellite locations and online.  

School Bus Involved in Minor Crash

Yesterday, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle collision involving an Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation School Bus
and a pickup truck at the intersection of North Saint Joseph Avenue and Allens Lane.
It was reported that the EVSC school bus was attempting to turn east onto Allens Lane
when it collided with a 2010 Ford F-150 traveling northbound on Saint Joseph Avenue.

There were only three students aboard the school bus at the time of the accident and each complained of minor pain at the scene. The children did not require any further medical treament and were released to their respective guardians to be taken to school. According to the investigating deputies no injuries were reported by the drivers. The intersection had a lane restriction for a short time so the vehicles could be removed by wrecker services.

USI Visits #1 Bellarmine Saturday

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball visit number-one ranked Bellarmine University Saturday at 7 p.m. (CST) in Louisville, Kentucky to begin the second half of the GLVC schedule. Saturday’s showdown is the start of a three-game road trip for USI, the longest of the year for the Screaming Eagles.Game coverage for all of USI’s GLVC games, including live stats, the GLVCSN, and audio broadcasts, is available at GoUSIEagles.com. USI splits homestand. The University of Southern Indiana split its homestand last week with a 96-64 victory over Missouri University of Science & Technology and a 76-72 loss to Drury University. Senior guard Alex Stein led USI with 18.0 points, while junior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell and sophomore forward Emmanuel Little averaged 15.5 points and 15.0 points per game, respectively.

Eagles on the road in 2018-19. USI is officially 3-1 on the road in 2018-19. Senior guard Alex Stein is averaging 19.8 points per game on the road, while junior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell and sophomore forward Emmanuel Little are posting 18.5 points and 10.0 points per road game, respectively.

USI in January. The Eagles were 6-2 in the month of January, which included a five-game winning streak. USI averaged an impressive 80.4-68.4 margin versus opponents and won the battle on the glass, 38.2-29.9. During the first two months of the season, USI was 4-1 in November and 4-2 in December.

Stein closing in on 100 double-digit games. Senior guard Alex Stein has 97 double-digit scoring in his USI career and has scored in double-figures in the last 14 games, three games shy of a personal best of 17 last season.

Little notches 6th & 7th double-doubles of the year. Sophomore forward Emmanuel Little notched a two-year best last week with his sixth and seventh double-doubles of the year. Little, who has had back-to-back double-doubles three times this season, had 15 points/10 rebounds in the win over Missouri S&T and 15 points/11 rebounds in the loss to Drury.

USI vs. Bellarmine. USI leads the all-time series with Bellarmine, 50-43, but has lost the last six to the Knights and nine of the last 10 (2014-15 to 2018-19). The last USI win over Bellarmine in Knights Hall was in the 2013-14 season, 68-66, in overtime.
 
USI vs. Bellarmine in December. The Knights took the first meeting of the year, 92-80, at the PAC. Senior guard Alex Stein led the Eagles with 25 points, followed by sophomore forward Josh Price with 22 points.
 
Bellarmine in 2018-19. The Knights saw their record rise to 19-0 overall and 9-0 in the GLVC with their 90-61 victory over Missouri S&T. Bellarmine is one of two undefeated teams in the NCAA Division II.
 
USI vs. #1 Teams. USI is 4-7 historically versus number one ranked teams (2-3 vs. Bellarmine; 0-3 vs. Kentucky Wesleyan College; 0-1 vs. University of Findlay; 1-0 versus Michigan Tech University; 1-0 versus Metropolitan State University of Denver).

Documentary and Public Forum on School Funding

The Indiana State Teachers Association and LPAC-20, a local political action committee for education, is hosting a screening of the critically acclaimed 2016 documentary “Backpack Full of Cash” on Saturday, February 2 at Harrison High School.

The film explores the cost of privatization efforts to public schools across the country and it will be followed by a panel discussion including Sen. Vaneta Becker, Rep. Ryan Hatfield, EVSC Superintendent Dr. David Smith, Warrick County School Corporation Superintendent Brad Schneider, EVSC School Board member Andy Guarino, and Education Justice Advocate Dountonia S. Batts.

The free and open-to-the-public event will take place in the Harrison High School Auditorium, beginning with a reception at 9:30 AM. The film will begin at 10:00 AM with the panel discussion to follow.

 

Aces Basketball Game To Be Played As Scheduled

Game time is 6 p.m.

While the University of Evansville campus is set to be closed on Wednesday, the Purple Aces men’s basketball game against Bradley will go on as scheduled.

The Aces and Braves will meet up at 6 p.m. inside the Ford Center.  Tickets are still available up until game time.  The Carson Center ticket office WILL be open on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and tickets will also be available for purchase at the Ford Center.

Axel is one of four bunnies in a litter – aptly named Axel, Rose, Gene, and Simmons! Gene & Simmons have been adopted already. These four bunnies were part of a group of thirteen total from one household. As usual, pet store bunnies are not fixed when you purchase them, and their population can get out of hand very quickly! Axel’s adoption fee is $40 and includes his neuter & microchip.

Women’s Tennis Set to Host Quincy for 2019 Start

Head Coach Keely Porter and the University of Southern Indiana women’s tennis team will continue their 2018-19 campaign on Friday at the Evansville Tennis Center.

LAST SEASON

USI concluded 2017-18 with a 9-13 record overall with a 1-4 record in the Conference going 6-4 at home and 2-7 away.

The Eagles have already compiled a 2-1 record in 2018 so far with 7-0 wins over Kentucky Wesleyan and Oakland City in the fall. USI also fell 0-7 to the University of Charleston back in September.

RETURNING EAGLES AND NEW FACES

Junior Lauren Hambrock (Terre Haute, Indiana), junior Alex Jamison (Floyd Knobs, Indiana), and sophomore Lauryn Thompson (Evansville, Indiana) all return from 2018 with a combined record of 21-51 for the group.

New faces on the team include freshmen Rachel Anderson (Racine, Wisconsin), Shelby Braselton(Haubstadt, Indiana), Lindsey McCord (Greenfield, Indiana), and Kylie Skepnek (Algonquin, Illinois) who all look to make an impact this year.

THIS WEEKEND

The Eagles were selected fifth in the east division for the preseason 2019 GLVC women’s tennis poll back on January 25.

USI will host Quincy University to open up 2019 on Friday, February 1 at Noon at the Evansville Tennis Center.
