To accomplish, the office focuses on three objectives:

  • Third, build public-private partnerships to increase business and industry engagement with education systems.

AG Curtis Hill urges Congress to take action against robocalls

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill today urged the U.S. Senate to enact the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence (TRACED) Act, legislation to curb illegal robocalls and spoofing. A coalition of 54 attorneys general sent a letter to the U. S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation supporting the TRACED Act. The legislation is sponsored by Sens. John Thune, R-S.D.,  and Ed Markey, D-Mass.

“Everyone deserves to be able to enjoy peace and privacy without the interruption of unwanted calls,” Attorney General Hill said. “We need stronger measures aimed at stopping illegal robocalling. This legislation would be a definite step in the right direction.”

In their letter, the attorneys general state that the TRACED Act enables states, federal regulators and telecom providers to take steps to combat these illegal calls. The legislation will require voice service providers to participate in a call authentication framework to help block unwanted calls and creates an interagency working group to take additional actions to reduce robocalls and hold telemarketers and robocallers accountable.

More than 48 billion robocalls were made in 2018, making them the number one source of consumer complaints to the FTC and the FCC and resulting in millions in consumer losses. The state attorneys general work to enforce do-not-call laws and protect consumers in their states from being harassed and scammed by robocalls.

Attorney General Hill is joined in sending this letter by the attorneys general of all 50 states, the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories.

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s newest high school – New Tech Institute – was recently named a 21st Century Exemplar school by the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) for it’s outstanding practices in equipping learners with the necessary skills for success in college, career and life.  NTI was one of only 18 early learning centers, K-12 schools, districts and school programs across the U.S. to receive the distinction.

“Since 2013, P21’s 21st Century Learning Exemplar Program has been identifying and elevating examples of quality 21st century learning. Each year innovative education models are showcased to help other educators do better for every student,” said Karen Garza, President and CEO of Battelle for Kids.

Schools receiving the distinction demonstrated an exceptional implementation of the Framework for 21st Century Learning, a collective vision for learning that helps practitioners integrate skills into the teaching of key academic subjects. The Framework describes the skills, knowledge, and expertise students must master to success in work and life.

“Receiving this honor was not an easy task and we are so thrilled to be among the top 18 schools in the U.S. to receive this distinction,” said NTI Principal Chris Gibson. “It affirms the work we are doing here will benefit our students once they graduate and begin life after high school.”

Wife Arrested in Firefighter’s Death, Neighbor Reacts

0
The homicide investigation of the slain firefighter, Robert Doerr, uncovered a shocking revelation.

Becky Fox Doerr, the wife of Doerr is accused of deleting a phone call she received right before calling 911. She was arrested in the overnight hours for the obstruction of justice. According to court documents, this new information was not brought to the attention of investigators during the interview the night her husband was shot.

Neighbors say they heard the couple arguing from time to time, but they never thought Doerr’s homicide investigation would lead to his wife’s arrest.

“Something to go like this, something had to be wrong,” says Doerr’s neighbor, Jimmy Merida.

They seemed like a normal married couple in the eyes of the neighborhood and local fire department. She was even mentioned multiple times at his funeral.

According to some neighbors, there was one red flag. The couple’s relationship seemed to progress quickly.

“One minute you see them together and the next minute they are loading up to go to Florida to get married. I said Lord, isn’t that something,” says Merida.

Doerr’s friends say the couple was married last September. Members of the fire department made positive remarks about their marriage at the funeral Monday.
