UE Announces New Graduate Program in Engineering

0

The University of Evansville has announced plans to implement a new Masters of Engineering (M.Eng.) graduate program. Students will be able to enroll in the program beginning in the Fall of 2019. The professional degree program will offer three options: Master of Engineering – Electrical Engineering, Master of Engineering – Computer Engineering, and Master of Engineering – Computer Science. This 12-month graduate program is designed for those with a bachelor’s degree in engineering who wish to gain advanced knowledge and experience in their field.

The program’s one-year time frame is especially beneficial for undergraduate engineering students as they can extend their studies by one more year and obtain both a bachelor’s and a M.Eng. degree.

“Earning a Master of Engineering degree enables students to begin their career at an advanced level,” explained Ying Shang, UE dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. “Most engineers only have a bachelor’s degree, so those who have a M.Eng. stand out in the job market and in their work place. In fact, the salary for an engineer with a M.Eng. degree is typically $20,000 higher than for an engineer who just has a bachelor’s degree.”

The curriculum of all three degree options in the program follow a similar format but differ in specific course requirements and content. Students take advanced courses in their engineering area option and in related fields.

Admission into the Master of Engineering degree program requires an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. The cost of the program is $525 per hour.

Helping Young Hoosiers Make Connections, Succeed

0

According to Youth Mentor, a worldwide program helping families in need, 1 in 3 children under the age of 18 lack adult role models, leaving them alone during impressionable times in life. I am supporting legislation to establish a mentorship pilot program that would connect students and senior citizens in local schools, as well as a pilot program to help Hoosier children who are at risk of becoming juvenile offenders.

The senior-youth mentorship program would provide opportunities for older community members to volunteer their time while sharing their life experiences and skills with students. Students would receive reliable guidance and develop life skills, while their mentors share their experience and help younger generations grow in their personal relationships and academic careers. If a student is facing difficulties, a mentor could provide students emotional support and connect them with the right resources.

The Indiana Department of Education can select three schools to participate in the pilot program, and these schools would receive a safety grant to assist with the costs of implementation and other related expenses. Retired military and law enforcement members have voiced their support of this mentorship program, and see it as a valuable experience for everyone who participates. Volunteers aged 55 and over would be eligible to work with students after passing a thorough background check and child protection index check.

Another bill I am supporting would establish a program to help children with extreme behavioral issues who are at-risk of entering the criminal justice system. This program would offer mentoring, mental health counseling and tutoring at no cost to families. Participation would be voluntary and confidential, and the program is designed for those referred by school staff, police, court officials, agencies and parents with concerns about a child.

Five counties could launch the program to serve as an intervention initiative for children not yet in the court system. Schools would work with the local government to determine the needs of young Hoosiers, identify any missing support systems and establish a plan.

Our young Hoosiers cannot stand alone, and these pilot programs could be extremely impactful on school-age kids. As always, I encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback on legislation as it moves through the process. Contact me with any input or questions at h75@iga.in.gov or 317-232-9643.

Ivy Tech Evansville Hosts Wellness Fair and Mental Health Expo

0

Ivy Tech Community College will conduct a Wellness Fair and Mental Health Expo on Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Koch Student Center at Ivy Tech Evansville Campus located at 3501 N. First Avenue. There will also be a free presentation, video and discussion pertaining to mental health in college students at 1:30 p.m. in the Vectren Auditorium, Room 147. These events are free and open to the community.

“This year, we decided to add a new twist to our Annual Wellness Fair by bringing more awareness and education for mental health.” said Ivy Tech’s Wellness Director Amy Lutzel.  “Too many people still don’t know enough about mental illness which creates a stigma that needs to end. Mental illness does exist and we want you to learn as much as you can about the resources in our area as well as what things you can do to treat it. This event is also a convenient opportunity for the community to learn about some of the health-related programs we offer at Ivy Tech.”

The Wellness Fair and Mental Health Expo will also showcase booths from more than 50 area vendors including Mental Health America of Vanderburgh Co., AhaNOW! Counseling, Southwestern Behavioral Health, Suicide Prevention Coalition, Tri-State Alliance, Boyett Recovery, Gilda’s Club, Tri-State Holistic Wellness, Deaconess Hospital, YWCA, ECHO, Evansville Parks Department, and many more. There will also be free blood pressure screenings, chair massages, and cholesterol screenings provided by our students as they showcase what they’re learning in their programs. The Ivy Tech nursing students will also be providing health-related information as part of their community project.
