OCRA Partners With Indiana Youth Institute In Rural Communities

0

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs have partnered with the Indiana Youth Institute to provide a unique opportunity to retain talent and build assets in rural areas for future generations.

“It is so important that young people in our communities are becoming engaged in their areas,” Crouch said. “When you have a personal stake in your hometown, you are more likely to stay there, which in turn will increase economic development in our state.”

Rural communities are invited to apply for an opportunity to launch a Promise Indiana initiative in their county. The Promise Indiana program works with collaborative communities to encourage saving behaviors, while engaging local schools and community and youth-serving organizations.

“We are excited to partner with the Indiana Youth Institute and Promise Indiana to provide this opportunity to rural communities,” said Jodi Golden, Executive Director of OCRA. “The program benefits not only the community with increasing leadership and capacity building, but also creates a strong sense of place for rural youth.”

Promise Indiana ensures every child has the assets, champions and community support to pursue their dreams by leveraging the entire community to begin saving for post-secondary education and training.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for rural communities to help open the doors to postsecondary education for their children,” said Tami Silverman, President, and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute. “We are thrilled to work with our partners to expand the Promise Indiana initiative and ensure that all Hoosier youth thrive.”

Interested communities must submit an application by June 30, 2019. The application will evaluate the potential capacity of communities based on the following criteria:

  • demonstrated alignment to the program, including leadership partnerships;
  • strength of potential strategy and action;
  • presence of available local skillsets;
  • local community accountability;
  • ability to leverage local resources; and
  • projected geographic reach.

Five communities will receive a wide array of capacity-building services from Indiana Youth Institute to develop a locally responsive collective engagement plan in preparation to become a Promise Indiana community.

“LEFT JAB AND RIGHT JAB”

“LEFT JAB AND RIGHT JAB”

“Right Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have two commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
Joe Biden and Ronald Reagan’s comments are mostly about issues of national interest.  The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give Mr. Biden and Mr. Reagan exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “Left Jab” is a liberal view and the “Right Jab is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments of the two gentlemen is free to do so.

The Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) is more than just a place to get people from one place to another, it’s the front door to a region called Indiana’s Great Southwest. When surveying travelers for the purpose of their trip, various reasons emerge: some are seeking new opportunity, while others are visiting established connections either for business or pleasure. Regardless the reason, EVV stands ready to welcome them while providing purposeful and beautiful environments to make their stay more comfortable and perhaps more memorable.
One of Southwest Indiana’s top Regional Cities projects, EVV’s $20 million terminal renovations along with its dedication to provide stellar service to passengers with added flights and destinations, has yielded a 35% increase in air traffic over the past four years. Besides enhancing walkways and enhanced pedestrian safety, EVV now offers a centralized screening area with a dedicated lane for TSA Pre-check, reconfigured amenities including a business lounge with private work spaces, as well as kids playground and pet relief area.

An Evening With Alice Cooper” Coming November 27th!

0

Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was
designed to shock.  Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created
a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. He continues to tour regularly, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he’s best known for.

With a schedule that includes six months each year on the road, Alice Cooper brings his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect
of shock-rock, Cooper (in both the original Alice Cooper band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages
and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise
fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie.

The camp is for students currently in the seventh and eighth grades in Gibson, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties who are interested in exploring epidemiology and careers in public health. The camp will be held in the morning, June 3-7, 2019, at the SICTC, 1901 Lynch Road in Evansville.

Dr. Erin Reynolds, assistant professor of Health Services in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of Southern Indiana, and Gwen Barnett, Health Science Education instructor at SICTC, will lead a variety of activities to teach students about epidemiology, food safety, global health, using a microscope and how to collect and analyze data.
