Don’t Fall for Harvest Season Hazards
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind motorists to exercise caution on our county roadways as fall harvest season gets underway. “Our local farmers will be moving farm implements and other agricultural machinery along county roadways in order to access farm fields,†said Sheriff Dave Wedding. “Motorists should be prepared for machinery to enter a field from the roadway or exit a field onto the roadway.”
Machinery that travels under 25 miles per hour is required to display a slow moving vehicle emblem (see Indiana Code 9-21-9). “Crashes can occur when a motorist fails to recognize that the machinery they are approaching is moving at a significantly slower speed than normal traffic,†said Sheriff Wedding. “The risk of making this miscalculation increases at night. Don’t attempt to pass slow moving farm equipment unless it is safe and legal to do so.â€
October and November is breeding season for the white-tailed deer. Once corn starts being harvested, deer will lose their cover and begin moving across roadways frequently. Last year there were 154 crashes in Vanderburgh County that involved deer and 5 of those crashes resulted in injury. 67 of last year’s crashes that involved deer occured in October and November alone.
“Traffic typically increases on our rural roadways during the fall, especially in areas known for agricultural tourism,†said Sheriff Wedding. Motorists are advised to slow down and watch for increased traffic in the area of Mayse Farm Market on N. Saint Joseph Ave and Goebel Farms on W. Boonville-New Harmony Rd.”
“With motorists and farmers sharing the responsibility of keeping our roadways safe this fall, there is no reason to expect anything less that a successful harvest,” said Sheriff Wedding.
Fall Harvest Safety Tips:
- Exercise caution and patience when approaching farm machinery.
- Farm machinery may enter the roadway at any time, so slow down if you see equipment traveling towards or adjacent to a roadway.
- Do not pass farm machinery unless it is safe and legal to do so.
- Farm machinery is typically not equipped with turn signals, so watch for unanticipated left turns and increase your following distance at night.
- Be aware of increased traffic at agricultural tourism locations.
- Watch for deer! If you spot one, then expect more to cross.

USI Falters In 2nd Half To Bellarmine, 1-0
The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team allowed a second-half goal and fell to Bellarmine University, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles go to 3-2-0 overall and are 1-2-0 GLVC, while Bellarmine is 4-2-0 overall, 1-2-0 GLVC.
USI and Bellarmine battled to a 0-0 draw through the first half. The Eagles’ defense was solid and was able to keep the Knights off the board for the first 45 minutes despite being outshot, 9-4. Both teams had one shot on-goal before the intermission.
In the second half, Bellarmine broke through the USI defense for the only time at 70:14, but that lone goal would prove to be the game-winner. The Knights finished the game with a 21-13 advantage in total shots, 8-5 in shots-on-goal. USI freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne (Midland, Michigan) had a total of seven saves in the loss.
The Eagles come home to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field for a pair of matches next weekend. USI starts the homestand Friday when it hosts Lindenwood University at 5 p.m. and concludes September 29 against the University of Missouri-St. Louis at noon. Friday’s match will be Lindenwood’s first visit for to Strassweg Field and its first match-up all-time and in the GLVC versus USI in women’s soccer.
USI and UMSL are tied in the all-time series, 12-12-0, after the Eagles defeated the Tritons last year at home, 1-0, on a goal by forward Kennedy Moore. The Eagles also have won three of the last five matches versus the Tritons.
Princeton Man Arrested for DUI while transporting Daughter
Last night at approximately 9:00, Trooper Jordan Lee stopped the driver of a 1999 Pontiac for driving left of center on SR 168 near Church Street. The driver was identified as Bradley Beadles, 43, of Princeton. During the traffic stop Trooper Lee observed signs of impairment. Beadles’ nine-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed Beadles tested positive for marijuana and had a blood alcohol content of .10%. The nine-year-old was released to a family member. Beadles was arrested and taken to the Gibson County Jail where he posted bond and was later released.

EPA’s Campus RainWorks Challenge Invites Students to Design Innovative Infrastructure for Stormwater Management
Challenge Seeks To Attract Student Interest From Across The Country
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is launching its eighth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition that is open to colleges and universities across the country. EPA seeks to engage with students to design innovative green infrastructure solutions for stormwater management, showcasing the environmental, economic, and social benefits of these practices.
“The Campus RainWorks Challenge gets students excited about the innovative infrastructure that provides clean water for campus communities,†said EPA Assistant Administrator for Water David Ross. “The program engages the next generation of potential clean water professionals and fosters the interdisciplinary collaboration necessary to solve the problems of the future.â€
The 2019 Campus RainWorks Challenge will foster a dialogue about the need for innovative stormwater management, asking interdisciplinary student teams to design creative green infrastructure solutions that address stormwater pollution and benefit the campus community. Teams may submit entries in two categories—demonstration projects or master planning.
Each first-place team will earn a student prize of $5,000 to be divided evenly among student team members and a faculty prize of $5,000 to support green infrastructure research or training. Second-place teams will win a $2,500 student prize and a $2,500 faculty prize.
Registration for the 2019 Challenge opened Sept. 1, 2019, and closes Oct. 15, 2019. Registrants must submit their entries by Dec. 17, 2019, and winners will be announced in Spring 2020.
