Methylene Chloride Draft Risk Evaluation Available for Public and Scientific Review

0

EPA is asking for public input on a draft risk evaluation of more than 70 uses of Methylene Chloride (MC), including commercial paint and coating removal, consumer adhesives, sealants, degreasers, cleaners and automobile care products. This is the next step in a process outlined by the amended Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to review the risks associated with uses of MC—a process that is designed to thoroughly evaluate the available science before taking action to manage the risk associated with the use of the chemical. Methylene chloride is the fifth of the first ten chemicals to undergo risk evaluation under the amended TSCA.

The draft risk evaluation is not a final agency action. The draft risk evaluation represents the agency’s initial review of the scientific data on these chemicals and will be peer reviewed by independent, scientific experts as well as open to public comment. EPA will use feedback received from the peer review and public comment process to inform the final risk evaluation and will provide frequent updates on the agency’s progress through this process. If EPA’s final risk evaluation finds there are adverse health risks associated with this chemical under any of the specific conditions of use, the agency will propose actions to address those risks within the timeframe required by TSCA. EPA’s actions could include proposed regulations to prohibit or limit the manufacture, processing, distribution in the marketplace, use, or disposal of this chemical, as applicable.

The draft risk evaluation for MC discusses how workers, occupational non-users, consumers, and bystanders could be adversely affected by MC under certain conditions of use. As with any chemical product, EPA strongly recommends that users carefully follow all instructions on the product’s label.

EPA will accept comments on the draft risk evaluation until December 30, 2019 in docket EPA-HQ-OPPT-2019-0437 on regulations.gov. EPA will also hold a peer review meeting of EPA’s Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC) on the draft risk evaluation for this chemical’s conditions of use on December 3-4, 2019. The peer review meeting is open to the public to attend and provide comments.

Week 9 Eagle Notes:

Eagles split on the road: The Eagles salvaged a split last week on the road in the GLVC, falling in a heartbreaker to Truman State Univesity, 2-1, in overtime before bouncing back to defeat Quincy University, 2-0. Freshman defender Natalie Jostes had the goal in the loss to Truman, while sophomore forward Katlyn Andres and junior forward Taylor McCormick had the goals in the win at Quincy.

The GLVC Standings: USI enters this week’s action tied for fifth in the GLVC with Maryville University. Between the posts:  Freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne leads the Eagles in goal with a 9-3-1 record, a 0.66 goals against average, eight shutouts, and 72 saves during her first collegiate campaign. Etienne is one shutout away from tying Angie Gries (1996-99) for the USI single-season record (9).

Schoenstein enters his 4th year: USI Head Coach Eric Schoenstein is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Eagles, producing a 39-23-8 mark, a share of a GLVC regular season title, and three-straight GLVC Tournament appearances.

Maryville in 2019: The Saints of Maryville are 9-4-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the GLVC being swept on the first half of a four-match road swing. Maryville also is 2-3-0 in its last five matches.

USI vs. Maryville: USI leads the all-time series with Maryville, 6-4-1, after a pair of wins last year at Strassweg Field, winning 3-1 during the regular season and 2-0 in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. Overall, the Eagles won three of the last four matches between the two programs.

AG Curtis Hill issues statement on prosecutor’s decision to ignore marijuana law

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill today made the following statement regarding a declaration by Marion County’s acting prosecutor that he will not file charges against anyone accused solely of possessing one ounce or less of marijuana:

“I respect and support the fact that prosecutors have absolute discretion in deciding when to file criminal charges and how to allocate their resources. Typically, though, prosecutors carefully exercise this discretion on a case-by-case basis rather than proclaiming that in all cases they will ignore a particular state law not to their liking. I am concerned that this proclamation in Marion County will attract to Indianapolis people with a particular interest in communities where drug enforcement is lax. It seems to me a curious strategy to put out a welcome mat for lawbreakers in a community already facing challenges related to crime, homelessness and other social problems stemming from drug abuse.”
