Contact us BY EMAIL ONLY at adoptions@vhslifesaver.org to inquire about adopting a pet during this time.
  • All current Spay/Neuter Clinic appointments still stand. We currently have all of the medical supplies required to perform surgeries & vaccinations as usual. If you currently have an appointment with us through March 31st, you should have received an email on Monday 3/16 with amended drop-off and pickup instructions. (If your appointment is after March 31st, you will not have received an email.)
  • We are not accepting new Spay/Neuter Clinic appointments at this time. If you do not currently have an appointment, please contact us after April 1st. Our current bookings are scheduled out into late April/early May.
  • We are suspending our Low-Cost Vaccine Clinics until further notice.
  • Our Intake Department will be closed until further notice unless you currently have an appointment. If you need to surrender a pet, contact us after April 1st.

  • Our Happy Tails Resale Shop will be CLOSED through Saturday, March 28th for both donations AND shopping. This is for the safety of our shop volunteers, most of whom are 60 or older. • River Kitty Cat Café is still open for carry-out only. By order of Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, all bars & restaurants must close to dine-in customers. Please do still order carry-out wine, beer, macarons, and merchandise from River Kitty! Adjusted business hours through March 31st will be updated on the River Kitty Facebook page. River Kitty also offers Grubhub delivery! (If you are interested in adopting a cat from River Kitty, contact our Adoptions team to make an appointment.)
  • There will not be Emergency Food Assistance in April.

Q: Why is public support continuously needed for the VHS?
The Vanderburgh Humane Society senior leadership team wants to stress to the public that donations and support are vital, now more than ever, to make sure that our 200+ animals are cared for. The organization depends 100% on donations from the public and fees from in-person services & programming including:

  • Clinic fees
  • adoption fees
  • Happy Tails Resale Shop revenue
  • River Kitty Cat Café revenue

The VHS receives zero tax dollars or state/national funding from larger organizations.

Any reduction in public support and especially the closure of our Happy Tails Resale Shop/reduction in River Kitty income will mean a significant drop in public-facing revenue to help offset those expenses.

As a reminder, even when the shelter is closed to the public, expenses remain largely unchanged because a team of paid staff members must be there to care for the animals. It costs approximately $56,000 just to pay for two weeks of shelter operations. Several wonderful volunteers also assist, but volunteers are not ever required to be here. Additionally, many VHS volunteers are retired or older, and have been encouraged to stay home during this crisis. The shelter’s animals and the cats at River Kitty will always be cared for without any interruption in their daily routines.

LOCAL STUDENT ARTIST TO PROVIDE OUTDOOR MURAL AT RIVER KITTY CAT CAFE

0

A local University of Southern Indiana student named Jenna Sharp will be painting an outdoor mural at River Kitty Cat Café thanks to a $2,500 Endeavor Award for Research & Creativity.

According to USI, the purpose of the Endeavor Awards is to support the creative and research efforts of undergraduate students. All USI students from all majors are welcome.

Jenna traveled to Denver, Colorado in August 2019 to spend some time working with mural artist Lindee Zimmer. The remaining funds went towards supplies for the mural itself.

Jenna reached out to the Vanderburgh Humane Society team in early 2020 about selecting River Kitty Cat Café as the site of her mural.

“We were thrilled that Jenna thought of River Kitty when considering where she would create her mural,” says Amanda Coburn, VHS Development Coordinator. “Public art enriches all our lives, and with our downtown district thriving the way it is, this is the perfect time for a new mural downtown. It will help attract more visitors to River Kitty which will ultimately help raise funds for homeless shelter cats in our community.”

Jenna will be working on the mural through approximately this Thursday, March 19th, weather permitting.

Mandy Gunasekara Sworn in as EPA Chief of Staff

0
Mandy Gunasekara began her tenure as Chief of Staff to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler.

“I am pleased that Mandy Gunasekara has rejoined us here at the Environmental Protection Agency to serve as our Chief of Staff to further our mission of protecting human health and the environment,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “I am honored to have her join our team and help me lead the agency. I am confident that she will be a great success as we work to advance the Trump Administration’s environmental goals.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join a highly-effective team of experts. Continuing our nation’s environmental and public health progress is of the utmost importance. I intend to use my time, energy and resources helping Administrator Wheeler and President Trump achieve this noble goal,” said EPA Chief of Staff Mandy Gunasekara.

Mandy Gunasekara is a veteran Republican strategist and communicator with extensive experience in environmental issues. Most recently, Mrs. Gunasekara founded the Energy 45 Fund, a Jackson, Mississippi-based non-profit dedicated to informing the public about the energy, environmental and economic gains made under the Trump Administration.

Prior to Energy 45, Mrs. Gunasekara served as EPA’s Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation. While at EPA, she spearheaded many of the Trump Administration’s greatest energy and environmental policy achievements, including the Affordable Clean Energy rule. Mrs. Gunaskera also previously served as Majority Counsel for Chairman Inhofe, where she led committee actions and policy development on Clean Air Act and climate change issues.

A native Mississippian, Mandy earned a J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law and a B.A. from Mississippi College.

Widespread Praise for Mrs. Gunasekara’s Appointment:

U.S. Senator James Inhofe (OK): “Mandy Gunasekara did a fantastic job working for me on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee during my tenure as Chairman and she is a superb choice for EPA Chief of Staff. Not only does she bring her years of experience on environmental issues to the table, but she also has a heart for public service that is hard to come by. She will be a great asset to EPA Administrator Wheeler and the Trump Administration in this new role.”

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (MS): “I am glad a Mississippian will be helping to lead a major government agency. Mandy Gunesakara’s experience as an environmental attorney, private-sector leader, and well-respected policy advisor will help her navigate the many challenges she will face as chief of staff at the EPA. I am confident that she will provide wise counsel to Administrator Wheeler as he works to implement the President’s environmental policies.”

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (MS):“Administrator Wheeler and the White House understand that Mandy is a proven leader with impeccable qualifications to help fulfill President Trump’s promise to eliminate job-killing, overreaching government regulations. As a fellow Mississippian and woman, I’m delighted to see Mandy in this important role.”

Governor Tate Reeves (MS): “Mandy Gunasekara is a fantastic choice to serve as Chief of Staff for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler. It’s welcome news any time a Mississippian can serve in a leadership position across any administration because we need more Mississippi values in Washington. I have known Mandy for many years, and her dedication to conserving our nation’s natural beauty and resources and her environmental legal background make her well-suited for this pivotal role.”

U.S. Congressman James Comer (KY-01):“Mandy Gunasekara is a fantastic choice to serve as Chief of Staff for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We had the privilege of having Mandy testify as an expert witness during a House Oversight Environment Subcommittee hearing earlier this year. There’s no question she’s highly informed and educated on the issues. I look forward to working with her and the rest of the EPA as Ranking Member of the Environment Subcommittee and to protect Kentucky’s treasured natural resources.”

U.S. Congressman Bob Latta (OH-05): “Mandy Gunasekara has been instrumental in leading American policies towards energy independence. She is a dedicated public servant and I am confident she will make a great Chief of Staff at the EPA.”

U.S. Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-04):“Mandy has been a strong leader in Mississippi and an expert on environmental issues. Our nation is lucky to have such a well-rounded Mississippian making top-level decisions and I know she will serve as an asset to President Trump’s Administration.”

U.S. Congressman Trent Kelly (MS-01): “Mandy Gunasekara is a proven leader and devoted public servant, demonstrating an outstanding commitment to the environment. I am proud to see my fellow Mississippian assume this critical role for the Environmental Protection Agency.”

U.S. Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03): “Mandy Gunasekara’s background in energy and environmental policy matters and her previous experience at the EPA will serve Administrator Wheeler well. I look forward to working with Mandy on issues of importance to Mississippi and the nation.”

The Honorable Jason Isaac, Senior Manager and Distinguished Fellow at Texas Public Policy Foundation: “Mandy’s principled leadership at the EPA will ensure the current administration continues to strike the proper balance between responsible stewardship and individual liberty.”

AG Curtis Hill urges Hoosiers to submit price-gouging complaints online amid coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill today urged Hoosiers who believe they have been subjected to excessive prices for consumer goods during the coronavirus pandemic to file a complaint online with the Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.

While specific price-gouging authority in Indiana law refers to fuel prices during a state of emergency, the Office of the Attorney General has authority to enforce the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act, which permits appropriate enforcement of any unfair, abusive, deceptive or unconscionable conduct. In an executive order issued Monday, Gov. Eric Holcomb said Hoosiers who believe they’ve been subjected to excessive prices for consumer goods should contact the Attorney General’s Office.

In accordance with the executive order and the authority of the Office within Indiana law, the Office of the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division is accepting complaints related to excessive prices for all consumer goods.

To submit a price-gouging complaint, the Office is encouraging Hoosiers to utilize the online consumer complaint form, which can be found at www.indianaconsumer.com, click on “File a Complaint”. If you have questions about the types of complaints handled by the Consumer Protection Division, you may call the Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-382-5516 or 317-232-6330.

0

The health and safety of the University of Southern Indiana campus community continues to be our top priority. In response to the rapidly changing environment created by the COVID-19 virus, the University is taking further immediate actions.

The move to online or alternative instruction, scheduled to begin Monday, March 23, will now extend through the end of the spring semester. Students with difficulty accessing online coursework should contact the Dean of Students Office.

The USI campus, including University-owned and -operated locations outside of campus, such as Innovation Pointe, New Harmony properties and the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences, will remain open only to authorized personnel beginning at the end of the scheduled workday, Tuesday, March 17 until Monday, April 6.The April 6 date is subject to change. Authorized employees will be limited, and you will be notified by your supervisor if you are required to fulfill that role. Access to the University will be granted by Public Safety only to authorized personnel at the roundabout entrance on University Boulevard.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING TO CLOSE

USI will close on-campus housing effective immediately in order to facilitate social distancing. Procedures for an orderly move-out and transition, including retrieving essential items, will be provided to housing residents via email and on the Housing and Residence Life website by Wednesday, March 18. All move-outs should be completed no later than Sunday, March 22. Limited exceptions will be made only for students who do not have a permanent residence or cannot return to their permanent residence, including some international students. These students should complete a waiver form available in MyUSI through the housing portal.

All students who vacate housing will have their account credited for unoccupied days from Sunday, March 22 through Wednesday, May 6. Students will have until the end of the fall 2020 semester to use this converted Munch Money.

WORKING REMOTELY/COMPENSATION

During the three-week period of March 17 through April 6, all University employees will continue to receive their normal rate of pay. Employees not authorized to work on campus are required to work remotely. Supervisors will provide assignments as needed and determine authorized personnel. Supervisors should be as flexible as possible, considering the nature of the work and whether the necessary tools and technology are available to allow employees to fully perform their job duties away from campus. In cases where necessary tools and technology are not available to fully perform job duties, alternative assignments will be provided to allow for remote work. Paid time off (i.e. vacation) will still be allowed with supervisor approval.

Employees should also be flexible regarding performing both the duties of their position and potential other assignments as needed and directed by their supervisor.
