A TRUE DEPRESSION

Gavel Gamut by Jim Redwine

If a recession is when your neighbors lose their jobs but it is a depression when you lose yours, what is the analogy for our society’s losses due to ’Ole 19? Let me suggest that for Peg it was when she finally submitted herself to asking me to cut her hair. Yep, it’s complete capitulation; 19 can claim total victory. I should be able to show you photographic proof but it turns out that a wife’s hirsute humiliation is in the same category of bad husbanding as failing to separate the whites and colors for the laundry. No pictures of my artistry were allowed. In fact, Peg has found a new use for the flowered bandana she uses as a face mask; it now covers the top of her head too. And my attempts to assure her that within a few months her hair will grow back just seem to exacerbate the situation. Please allow me to digress.

Gentle Reader, you may have noticed it is hot in July and August near the latitude along the Mason-Dixon Line. Well Peg, who was born in upstate New York, had not quite acclimated to the previous weeks of 100-degree temperatures. Her Joan of Arc length hair tended to stick to her forehead and the back of her neck whenever she lugged water to her flowers and her vegetable garden. The martyr-type comparison will make sense by the time you finish the column. I was understanding and sympathetic, but my advice that Mother Nature would eventually provide rain was not received gladly. She stubbornly persisted and even suggested I could get involved if the TV re-runs of old golf matches didn’t interfere. Surely, we need not revisit that painful discussion.

The real problem is not me but ’Ole 19. Peg used to go to the beauty shop to get her hair cut. Or, when we still lived in Indiana, our daughter, Heather, who is a beautician would take care of it. However, now, as we do not wish to contribute to 19’s macabre statistics, we have socially isolated since our last foray out to eat which was March the 5th. We wear masks, we wash our hands, we ignore our friends and family, we shop online, we eat lots of tuna. But we both knew the Corona Virus had achieved complete domination when Peg said last week, “Jim, I just can’t stand this heat and having my hair string down my face and neck. Nobody but you is ever going to see me again anyway (I thought that a little overly dramatic) so you are going to have to cut it. Come watch these YouTube videos and try to pay attention.”

Well, it didn’t look that hard to me. I remember when I got my hair cut in Pawhuska, Oklahoma by Clyde Ensley or Bob Butts or in Mt. Vernon, Indiana by Steve Burris. Heck, it appeared about like cleaning a squirrel or a chicken. Just slice here, snip there, shear off the sides. No problem. After watching for ten minutes or so I was pretty sure I could give Vidal Sassoon a run. “Peg, get a towel and I’ll grab a pair of scissors and the electric clippers you used to use on our dearly departed dog and meet you on the front porch.”

It probably would have turned out better if Peg had not sat as if she were an unfortunate customer of an electric chair and if she hadn’t jumped and squirmed each time the clippers whirred and the scissors snipped. Regardless, in my unbiased opinion I did a fine job. If the bowl I used had fit better it would have helped. I can only guess at Peg’s opinion as she hardly has spoken to me for three days and when she does it is difficult to make out what she is saying amid the shrieks, sobs and expletives as she tries to pull her hair back to its former length.

HOOSIER HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS

cabin1802     William Conner established a trading post on the west fork of the White River in Central Indiana.  He found success in the fur trade and in general commerce with pioneers and Native Americans.   A few years later, state commissioners met at the Conner cabin when they came to the area in search of a site for a new capital city.

Jennings

1816     In the first state election, Jonathan Jennings was elected Indiana Governor.  He defeated Territorial Governor Thomas Posey.  At age 32, Jennings was faced with the challenge of laying the foundation for the new state.  In November, the new legislature met in the capital city of Corydon.  Pictured:  A detail from the official state portrait of Jonathan Jennings by artist T. C. Steele.

Krout1903     Well-known journalist Mary Hannah Krout took time from her travels to visit friends on North Meridian Street  in Indianapolis.  Born in Crawfordsville, she traveled the world as a correspondent for newspapers in several cities, including Chicago and Denver.  One of the first female reporters, she covered the major news events of her day.  She was also active in the women’s suffrage movement.  She published several books and helped compile and edit the autobiography of fellow Crawfordsville citizen, Lew Wallace.

Harding1923     An express train sped through the night of August 7 carrying the body of President Warren G. Harding.  As it traveled from California to Washington, it passed through Northern Indiana.  Thousands gathered along the route from Gary to Walkerton to Nappanee to Kendallville to St. Joe.  In Goshen, 75 boy scouts stood at attention and sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”  At the Lake Wawasee station, a salute was fired by cadets of the Black Horse Troop from Culver Military Academy.  Harding had died unexpectedly a few days earlier in San Francisco.

Wiggins

1926     Charles Wiggins won the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  The 100-lap, 100-mile event was held for African-American drivers who were not permitted to compete in the Indianapolis 500.  Wiggins went on to win the Gold and Glory three more times.  Born in Evansville, he was the son of a coal miner and became a skilled mechanic as well as winning driver.

Santa1946     Santa Claus Land, the nation’s first theme park, opened in Santa Claus, Indiana, in Spencer County.  There were no roller coasters at first, but there was a House of Dolls, a train ride, a restaurant, and, of course, jolly old Santa Claus himself.  The park grew each year and, in 1984, became Holiday World.

Crown Hill

Did You Know?

Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis is the final resting place for more than 60 men and women associated with automobile manufacturing and racing. The many drivers include Louis Schneider, Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker, Tony Lee Bettenhausen, Elfrieda Mais LaPlante, Floyd Davis, Paul Russo, “Howdy” Wilcox, and Charles Wiggins (included in this week’s “Hoosier History Highlights.”) Also at Crown Hill are three founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Carl Fisher, James Allison, and Frank Wheeler.  Famed car designer A. J. Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” August 2, 2020

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT UPDATES STATEWIDE COVID-19 CASE COUNTS

0

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) today announced that 989 additional Hoosiers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at ISDH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and private laboratories. That brings to 67,122 the total number of Indiana residents known to have the novel coronavirus following corrections to the previous day’s dashboard.

A total of 2,771 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, an increase of six over the previous day. Another 200 probable deaths have been reported based on clinical diagnoses in patients for whom no positive test is on record. Deaths are reported based on when data are received by ISDH and occurred over multiple days.

As of today, more than 35 percent of ICU beds and more than 84 percent of ventilators are available across the state.

To date, 758,606 tests for unique individuals have been reported to ISDH, up from 747,383 on Friday.
