Urgent Response Needed From Fans Of UE Men’s Basketball Concerning Seating Change

0

Urgent Response Needed From Fans

Due to a policy that has recently been enacted by Venuworks, who is the management company of the Ford Center, there will be seating changes for the upcoming University of Evansville men’s basketball season.  The new policy requires all venue seating to be socially distanced through the creation of family units or what will be referred to as “seating pods”.

In the “Pod System”, a season ticket holder and their associated guests are identified as “Family Units”.  These pods will be spaced by the CDC prescribed safety distance of at least 6 feet apart from other seating pods.  This buffer is comprised of the row in front and behind the group being left vacant as well as a minimum of three seats on either side of the pod.  All aisleway seats will be left vacant in order to maintain a buffer from patrons as they move to their assigned seating locations. As a reminder, all patrons will be required to wear a mask throughout the event.

PLEASE NOTE: All seating changes are temporary for the entirety of the 2020-2021 season.

This policy update will require UE athletics to re-seat all season ticket accounts. The Purple Aces ticket office will do its best to seat season ticket holders as close to their current location as possible while remaining compliant with the safety guidelines in order to be able to welcome supporters this season.

UE athletics is offering its season ticket holders a unique service.  It is obvious that many supporters have developed relationships with other Aces fans over the years.  UE athletics is going to do as much as possible to ensure that fans can be near others who they have enjoyed games with over the years.

In order to do this, the department needs help from its season ticket account holders.  By clicking HERE (https://gopurpleaces.com/sb_output.aspx?form=54), you can inform UE athletics of anyone you would like to remain seated by as seating pods are assigned.  Requests will be accepted until Tuesday, October 20 at 11:59 p.m. in order to give the ticket office ample time to re-seat everyone.  If a request is not received, the account will be re-seated without other season ticket holders in an assigned pod.  By filling out the form, you and everyone in your “Seating Pod” or “Family Unit” acknowledge the risks of COVID-19 transmission and are comfortable enough with the parties in your group to be seated together without the additional social distancing.  BOTH parties must agree to be in the “Family Unit”.

The expected timeline leading up to the season is as follows:

  • Tuesday, October 20: deadline to submit your seating pod request form HERE
  • Thursday, October 22: UE ticket office staff completes initial Ford Center re-seat
  • Friday, October 23-Thursday, October 29: Season ticket holders will receive a personal phone call from a UE ticket office representative detailing their new seat location
  • Wednesday, November 11-Monday, November 16: Season tickets will be available for curbside pickup at the Carson Center (more details to come)
  • Tuesday, November 17: All remaining season tickets will be mailed to the address on file
  • Wednesday, November 25: earliest college basketball start date as mandated by the NCAA

With the reduction of Ford Center capacity to roughly 25%, the available single-game ticket inventory is expected to be extremely low. The only way to guarantee admission to all home games is by maintaining your season tickets.

AG Curtis Hill Announces Improved Settlement With Opioid Manufacturer MNK

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill today announced an update to a global settlement framework agreement between state attorneys general, local subdivisions, and the opioid manufacturer Mallinckrodt (MNK), its subsidiaries and certain other affiliates.

Under the new settlement, MNK, the largest generic opioid manufacturer in the United States, will pay $1.6 billion into a trust that will go toward abating the opioid crisis, including valid claims related to MNK’s role in the opioid crisis raised by non-governmental claimants.

MNK will pay the $1.6 billion according to the following schedule:

  • $450 million upon its emergence from bankruptcy;
  • $200 million annually on first and second anniversaries of its emergence from bankruptcy; and
  • $150 million annually on third through seventh anniversaries of its emergence from bankruptcy.

This updated payment schedule improves the February deal by moving $150 million from the last payment to the first. Since the February settlement, MNK has taken on additional liability due to other legal issues and the impact of COVID-19. As a result, MNK is now putting the entire company into bankruptcy, which requires that the February agreement be renegotiated.

MNK also agrees that its opioid business will be subject to stringent injunctive relief that, among other things, will prevent marketing and ensure systems are in place to prevent drug misuse.

“This is a significant development in our efforts to provide relief to Hoosiers who have been hurt by the unprecedented opioid crisis,” Attorney General Hill said. “Opioid misuse and addiction continues to afflict the people of Indiana, and we will continue to do everything in our power to mitigate the effects of this urgent and tragic public health emergency.”

Details about how much money each state will receive, how the money will be distributed, and how the trust will be administered are still being negotiated.

Attorney General Hill has made investigating and pursuing solutions against bad actors involved in the opioid crisis one of his top priorities. In November 2018, Attorney General Hill filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin. The lawsuit alleged that Purdue Pharma intentionally understated the dangerous health risks of long-term opioid use and deceptively marketed their drugs in a way that violated Indiana law.

Attorney General Hill also filed a lawsuit in May 2019 against individual members of the Sackler family, which controlled the majority of Purdue Pharma’s board of directors from 1990 through 2018.

Purdue Pharma declared bankruptcy in September 2019 after an onslaught of lawsuits, including Indiana’s litigation. Indiana is actively involved in the bankruptcy proceeding to ensure that it receives any funds to which it is entitled under the law.

In October 2019, Attorney General Hill filed a lawsuit against three primary distributors of opioids: Cardinal Health, McKesson Corp. and AmerisourceBergen Drug Corp. Attorney General Hill alleged in the lawsuit that the distributors played an integral role in the explosion of the opioid crisis and profited from that role.

“Hoosiers deserve all the help they can get for the consequences they have suffered since the onset of this crisis. I will continue to be there, fighting to ensure Indiana secures the resources it needs,” Attorney General Hill said.

Opioids are a class of drugs that include prescription painkillers and illegal drugs such as heroin. Nationwide, prescription and illegal opioids are the main cause of drug overdose deaths. According to the Indiana State Department of Health, 1,098 Hoosiers died as a result of opioid overdoses in 2018.

More than 47,000 Americans died as a result of opioid overdoses in 2017, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Amy Back Is Our Choice For The Vanderburgh County Council Seat

October 14, 2020

Growing up in politics, Amy Back learned at an early age that the government can do great good for people.  Amy was walking in parades and knocking on doors when she was 5 years old.  She enjoyed learning about local government from her father who served on City Council and as a Republican Mayor of Tipton, Indiana

She worked as a waitress through college and was involved in her sorority and community service. She went on to graduate with honors from Indiana University in political science.

After graduation, she moved to Indianapolis and took a job with the Association of Indiana Counties, and after her time there, she accepted a position as a Legislative Assistant for the Indiana House of Representatives.  As a Legislative Assistant, she wrote policy statements for her caucus and worked directly with department liaisons on Indiana Code and constituent services.

Amy met her husband, Jim in Indianapolis.  They moved to Evansville in January 2006, where she worked at the University of Evansville and Jim started working for Edward Jones Investments. After UE, she worked as the Director of Membership for the Southwest Indiana Chamber.  In 2017, Amy was hired as an event planner for the Mayor’s Substance Abuse Task Force.  She was involved in the implementation of a certification class for area social workers and counselors.  She also planned community forums with a national speaker regarding substance abuse and how to help family members cope.

Amy quickly became involved in our community. She joined Rotaract and ANEW (A Network of Evansville Women. She, also, sat on the finance committee for the YMCA and the Boards of the Legal Aid Society and Leadership Everyone. Amy is a recent graduate of Hoosier Women Forward, a political and civil leadership program designed to empower women to become more active participants in politics and leaders in their community. Amy is also a Board member for Youth First and Cops Connecting with Kids.

Amy and her husband Jim live on the Westside of Evansville with their four children, Maggie, Joseph, Caroline, and Samuel. They are involved with the St. Joseph Church, where Amy has been the President of the School Board and currently sits on the Parish Council.  Jim currently serves on the St. Joseph School Board.

Amy is a Democrat. She’s a fiscal conservative that will weigh financial issue on the costs versus benefits criteria. She will be a strong advocate of good public policy.

We are convinced that Amy Back has the professional, business, and communications skills that will bring a fresh and non-partisan approached in solving the enormous challenges facing the members of the Vanderburgh County Council in the coming years.

We respectfully ask you to consider voting for Amy Back for Vanderburgh County Council on November 3, 2020.

Virtual Global Salon Series To Discuss Health And Healthcare In Kenya

0

The University of Southern Indiana College of Liberal Arts will host its first virtual Global Salon presentation, “Health and Healthcare in Kenya,” by Dr. Jeri Burger, Associate Professor of Nursing, at 1 p.m. CST Thursday, October 15. The public can attend by going to bit.ly/usiglobalsalon or by using the Zoom meeting ID 925 7207 5787.

This presentation will provide information about healthcare in Kenya and explore various factors that affect health in this Sub-Saharan country. Dr. Jeri Burger traveled to Kenya in March 2020 and the trip provided opportunities to meet healthcare providers and tour some healthcare facilities. Through travel experiences and interaction with people in varied settings in Nairobi and rural areas, she learned about factors and conditions that influence health.

The Global Salon Series is brought to you by the USI Global Studies program. This series gets its name from the 17th century definition of a “salon,” a gathering where people come together to discuss and share knowledge of the social, cultural, political and philosophical ideas of the time. Founded in 2011, the series focuses on current global issues, providing students and the community with a richer understanding of international and global issues, while giving USI faculty the opportunity to share their current research with the public. It is comprised of three to four lectures per semester featuring USI faculty and community figures.

These virtual presentations will be live-streamed to the USI College of Liberal Arts Facebook page and recorded. For more information contact Dr. Dan Bauer, Professor of Anthropology, at 812-465-7065 or debauer@usi.edu.

Carla Hayden Is Our Choice For Vanderburgh County Clerk Of The Circuit Court

Carla Hayden is our choice for Vanderburgh County Clerk of the Circuit Court

October 15, 2020

The City-County Observer is pleased to announce that we are recommending that Republican Carla Hayden be re-elected as the Vanderburgh County Clerk Of The Circuit Court.

Four years ago Carla Hayden ran for the Vanderburgh County Clerk Of The Circuit Court and was elected by an impressive margin. She has proven to very competent in this most important elected position. Carla has the reputation of being a demanding and detailed person. Long-time Republican Election Board President Tom Massey said “Carla and her staff have done an outstanding job for the voters of Vanderburgh County.  She is very fair, diligent, and hardworking.  It is a pleasure to serve with her on the County Election Board.”

Born and raised in Southwestern Indiana, Carla Hayden learned the importance of family and the value of hard work from her mother, now a retired factory worker, and her father, now a retired union carpenter and union coal miner.

After graduating with honors from Pike Central High School near Petersburg, Indiana, and taking a break to start a family, Carla attended Vincennes University full-time during the day while working full-time in a factory at night in order to further her education.

Since graduating cum laude in 1989 with a degree in Paralegal Studies, Carla has used her degree in both the public and private sectors, including serving nearly eight years as Chief Deputy Clerk and nearly four years as the current Clerk of the Circuit Court.  She also worked as a paralegal in the fields of Personal Injury, Bankruptcy, and Elder Law.  In 2005, Carla was hired as a consultant on the Indiana Statewide Voter Registration Project.

As Clerk of the Circuit Court, the record keeper and chief financial officer of the courts, Carla brought to the job a working knowledge of both the legal system and county government, including those duties specific to the Clerk’s Office.  Carla is a Paralegal Member of the Evansville Bar Association and currently serves on the Legislative Committee of the Association of the Clerks of Circuit Courts of Indiana, which propose new legislation and works with legislators to either pass or defeat bills that impact Clerks.

As the Chief Elections Officer for the County, Carla has administered five (5) elections as Clerk and previously assisted with administering twelve (12) elections as Chief Deputy Clerk.

Carla is a fiscal conservative and looks for ways to improve the Clerk’s office. In 2017, Carla purchased directional signage for the Courts Building using the Clerk’s Record Perpetuation Fund, which is funded by court fees.  The signage helps direct the public to the courtroom where their case is being heard and provides other useful information.  Carla also purchased hi-density shelving for the basement of the Civic Center using the same fund, quadrupling the usable storage space and allowing some highly demanded records to be brought back onsite from a paid offsite storage facility.

In Spring 2020, Carla worked with the Vanderburgh County Council to purchase new epoll books using Riverboat Funds.  These replaced the old laptops that could no longer legally be used.  For Fall 2020, Carla worked with Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson and using a federal grant, purchased new voting machines with a voter-verified paper audit trail.  In addition to receiving over $2 million in new equipment at no cost to the taxpayers of Vanderburgh County, the county will also receive a refund of $243,720 for funds already expended in 2020.

Carla and her daughter, Vanessa, live in Evansville.  In her spare time, Carla enjoys watching movies, traveling, and spending time with family and friends

We respectfully ask that you consider casting your vote for Vanderburgh County Clerk Of The Circuit Court Carla Hayden (R) in the upcoming November 3, 2020, general election because has earned the right to serve another 4-year term in this most prestigious elected position.

“Left Jab” and “Middle Jab” and “Right Jab” October 14, 2020

0

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.
