UE Volleyball Welcomes Newest Class
Purple Aces Add Three for 2021
With a strong first season under his belt and a great deal of optimism for the upcoming spring slate, University of Evansville head volleyball coach Fernando Morales has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to begin their Purple Aces careers in 2021.
UE’s newest class includes Taya Haffner, Madisyn Steele and Giulia Cardona.
“We are very excited about the incoming 2021 class. We were lucky to close such a talented class with all the challenges we are going through,†Morales exclaimed. “We are happy with where this program is going.â€
Taya Haffner
A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Taya Haffner is a setter who played at Carroll F.W. High School. In 2020, she was named to the IHSVCA Players to Watch List while garnering IHSVCA Academic All-State accolades. Haffner earned a spot on the 2019 ICGSA Volleyball Class 4A All-State Team and was on the Ultra Ankle® JVA Watch List on two occasions – 2017 and 2018.
Coach Morales on Haffner:
“Taya is a tall setter with great hands. Her leadership skills are very advanced for her age. She is coached by probably the best setter in volleyball history, Indiana native and Olympic gold medalist Lloy Ball. I receive the best recommendation from him and when we went watch her play, we were sure she was the setter we wanted leading our program for the next four years.â€
Madisyn Steele
Madisyn Steele comes to the University of Evansville from New Paris, Ind. where she was a middle blocker at Fairfield Senior High School. She capped her career off with numerous IHSVCA accolades, highlighted by a spot on the 2020 IHSVCA Players to Watch List. Her on and off-court efforts resulted in three prestigious honors in 2020 – IHSVCA 2A All-State, IHSVCA 2A All-District and IHSVCA Academic All-State.
Coach Morales on Steele:
“Madisyn is a very athletic middle blocker, her height and size along with her athleticism will make her a very successful player in our conference. She plays in her club team with Taya so they will bring that connection from day one. She is the type of player we are looking for to have a bigger team to compete with the best of the MVC.â€
Giulia Cardona
Making her way to UE from Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina is Giulia Cardona. The right side hitter joins the Aces program following a successful career at Instituto Politécnico Superior “General San Martinâ€.
Coach Morales on Cardona:
“Giulia brings a lot of experience for her age. She brings the international game style that we are implementing in our program. She is a powerful hitter, server and all-around player. Her father was my coach when the Puerto Rico national team had their best years. We know she is being taught the right things and she will come to UE ready to contribute from day one.â€

Gov. Holcomb Announces State Equity Chief
Governor Eric J. Holcomb  announced Karrah A. Herring will serve as Indiana’s first-ever chief equity, inclusion and opportunity officer.
“My goal is to better build diversity and foster an inclusive environment within state government and the services we provide so every Hoosier can take full advantage of their gifts and potential,†Gov. Holcomb said. “Karrah will guide every state agency with her impressive experience at one of our state’s world-renowned universities.â€
In addition to naming Herring, the governor also announced that the CenterPoint Energy Foundation is supporting the state’s diversity and inclusion programs and services.
“The CenterPoint Energy Foundation has stepped up with a financial contribution for this effort because they understand getting this right is important for the long-term quality of life and growth in this state,†Gov. Holcomb said. “We are grateful for their focus on fostering more understanding, respect and trust in areas of diversity and inclusion.â€
Herring currently serves as the director of public affairs for the University of Notre Dame, where she has worked since 2011. From 2014 until 2018, she served on Notre Dame’s Human Resource’s Senior Leadership Team as director of the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX coordinator. In this role, Herring provided oversight and support of the university’s efforts to comply with federal and state civil rights laws related to policies prohibiting discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Herring created Notre Dame’s affirmative action plans, had oversight of employee disability compliance for the campus, and oversaw workplace investigations falling under Title VII and Title IX.
Herring earned her undergraduate degree from Purdue University and her law degree from Valparaiso University.
“I am honored to join Gov. Holcomb’s administration and be named the state’s first chief equity, inclusion and opportunity officer,†Herring said. “This is an incredible opportunity to drive cultural change across state government workplaces and essential state services by increasing equity and inclusion.â€
Gov. Holcomb announced the creation of the chief equity, inclusion and opportunity officer during his August address to the state. The officer will focus on improving state government operations as well as drive systemic change to remove hurdles in the government workplace and services the state provides. Herring will help agencies develop strategic plans to remove any barriers. As a member of the governor’s cabinet, Herring will report directly to the governor.
Through its charitable foundation, CenterPoint Energy has been in discussions with the state since the announcement of the position in August to help understand how they may partner with the state of Indiana to enhance diversity and inclusion programs. The CenterPoint Energy Foundation, through its strategic giving areas, supports programs that serve under-resourced populations to help communities thrive.

(Week of 23 November 2020)
Gentle Reader, if you read last week’s Gavel Gamut you will recall we were considering Alexis de Tocqueville’s observations of America as a country based on law. De Tocqueville’s parents, Hervé and Louise de Tocqueville, had barely escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution (1789-1799). De Tocqueville was born in 1805 so he and his family had an intimate personal understanding of the dangers of a nation ruled by individual people, not laws. De Tocqueville studied law and served as a magistrate. He knew the value of French philosopher Montesquieu’s theory of a government formed with a separation of balanced and competing powers (legislative, executive and judicial). And he agreed with the morality of English philosopher John Locke’s (1632-1704) theories that governments should serve their people whom nature had endowed with the rights to life, liberty and property.
When people call for revolution they might wish to re-visit Locke, Montesquieu and de Tocqueville or one could refer to those more contemporary English philosophers, The Beatles. As John Lennon sang while backed by the cabal of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in “Revolutionâ€:
♫ You say you want a revolution
  Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
  ….
But when you talk about destruction
Don’t you know you can count me out.
  ….
You say you got a real solution
  Well, you know
We’d all love to see the plan. ♫
Unfortunately, Mark David Chapman did not get the message. But Lennon’s untimely loss is an example of how ideology and ignorance can get weaponized as opposed to de Tocqueville’s prescient observation about how the United States holds its “revolutions†every four years via the ballot box. Americans may get quite passionate about their politics, but as Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) might philosophize, “It (should be) a passion put to useâ€, not destruction. (How Do I Love Thee).

UE Offering Rapid-Result Testing to Students Returning Home
The Indiana State Department of Health recently notified the University of Evansville (UE) that Abbott BinaxNOW rapid-result COVID-19 testing kits will be made available at no charge to higher education institutions across the state. UE will begin offering these free, voluntary tests to students beginning November 23. Students can register online for an appointment.
Unlike a deep nasal swab, the BinaxNOW is a less invasive test that only swabs the inside tip of the nostril. The results of the antigen test are available approximately 15-30 minutes after the test is administered and can be delivered to students via the NAVICA mobile app.
“Our students have worked very hard to follow the guidelines and minimize the spread of the virus at UE and in our community,” said Dana Clayton, PhD, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “Offering these tests will help students feel comfortable by providing them the knowledge of their own status with the virus. This will allow them to plan accordingly and ultimately assist in protecting their families and local communities as they travel home for winter break.”
Testing will be offered on-campus between November 23-25 to students who are planning to return home for Thanksgiving Break. For those who will remain on campus until the end of the semester, testing will be made available in mid-December.
If a student receives a positive test result, they will need to take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test at a local medical facility to confirm the original result. Students will also need to self-isolate when returning home.
Students can find complete information about the rapid-result testing and register for an appointment on UE’s website.
