USI WOMEN RALLY FROM NINE POINTS DOWN TO TOP FLYERS

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball rallied from a nine-point third-quarter deficit to earn a 63-52 Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division win over visiting Lewis University Saturday afternoon at Screaming Eagles Arena.

USI (4-0, 4-0 GLVC), which trailed 41-32 with just under six minutes top play in the third period, outscored the Flyers 31-11 throughout the final 16 minutes of the contest to earn the victory.

The Screaming Eagles held Lewis to just 2-of-20 shooting during the stretch, 1-of-13 from downtown, and used a strong inside presence to overtake their opponent.

Sophomore forwards Tara Robbe (Wildwood, Missouri) and Hannah Haithcock (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) combined for 14 of the Eagles’ 31 points in the final stretch. Robbe finished with 10 points and four rebounds, while Haithcock scored six of her nine points in the run as she finished the contest with a game and career-high 13 points.

Senior guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) added seven of her team-leading 14 points in the final 16 minutes as USI was able to overcome a three-point barrage from the Flyers.

Lewis (2-2, 2-2 GLVC), which got a game-high 18 points from freshman guard Jenna Badali, overwhelmed the Eagles with its outside game throughout the first 24 minutes of the contest. The Flyers made good on nine of their first 22 attempts from behind the arc as they rallied from an 11-point second-quarter deficit to take a 29-28 lead into the intermission.

The Flyers went 5-of-7 from the field and 2-of-3 from downtown in the first four minutes of the second half as they extended that cushion to nine points.

USI, however, ended the third quarter on a 10-3 run to close the gap to just two points (44-42) heading into the final period.

After a Haithcock layup tied the contest, the Flyers got a three-pointer from freshman guard Taylor Gugliuzza to take a 47-44 advantage. The three-pointer, however, would prove to be Lewis’s only field goal of the fourth quarter as the Eagles would go on to hold the Flyers 0-of-11 shooting throughout the final nine minutes of the game.

Freshman guard Kenna Hisle’s (Evansville, Indiana) layup with just over seven minutes to play gave the Eagles a 48-47 lead they would not relinquish throughout the remainder of the contest. Haithcock and Robbe followed with baskets throughout the next two minutes and a Robbe free throw with just over five minutes left in the game put USI up 53-47.

USI, which had six different players finish with at least five points, also got nine points from senior guard Ashley Hunter (Flossmoor, Illinois) as well as nine points, four assists and three steals from sophomore guard Addy Blackwell (Bloomington, Indiana). The Eagles held a decided edge in the rebounding battle as they outpaced the Flyers, 46-33, on the glass, while outscoring Lewis 36-12 in the paint.

The Eagles return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host McKendree University at Screaming Eagles Arena.

The Vanderburgh County Health Department Options To Reduce Quarantine

0

10/4/2020

The Vanderburgh County Health Department has reviewed new information from the CDC concerning options to reduce quarantine for individuals who have been identified as close contacts of persons who are positive with COVID-19. CDC offers the following alternative options to a 14-day quarantine:

    • The quarantine can end after Day 10 without testing and if no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring.
      • With this strategy, residual post-quarantine transmission risk is estimated to be about 1% with an upper limit of about 10%.
    • When diagnostic testing resources are sufficient and available, then quarantine can end after Day 7 if a diagnostic specimen tests negative and if no symptoms were reported during daily monitoring. The specimen may be collected and tested within 48 hours before the time of planned quarantine discontinuation (e.g., in anticipation of testing delays), but quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than after Day 7.
      • With this strategy, the residual post-quarantine transmission risk is estimated to be about 5% with an upper limit of about 12%.

Persons can discontinue quarantine at these time points only if the following criteria are also met:

    • No clinical evidence of COVID-19 has been elicited by daily symptom monitoring during the entirety of quarantine up to the time at which quarantine is discontinued; and,
    • Daily symptom monitoring continues through quarantine Day 14; and,
    • Persons are counseled regarding the need to adhere strictly through quarantine Day 14 to all recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs, a.k.a. mitigation strategies), especially. They should be advised that if any symptoms develop, they should immediately self-isolate and contact the local public health authority or their healthcare provider to report this change in clinical status.

Testing for the purpose of earlier discontinuation of quarantine should be considered only if it will have no impact on community diagnostic testing. Testing of persons seeking evaluation for infection must be prioritized.

Persons can continue to be quarantined for 14 days without testing per existing recommendations. This option maximally reduces risk of post-quarantine transmission risk and is the strategy with the greatest collective experience at present.

In a release earlier this week, State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG said, “The shorter quarantine periods will lessen the disruptions on schools and workplaces by allowing students, teachers and other key workers to return sooner.  However, she urged Hoosiers to complete the 10-day quarantine to avoid further increasing demand for testing.”

Vanderburgh County continues to see community spread and the Health Department asks that everyone continue to follow the recommended safety protocols of social distancing, mask wearing, good hand hygiene, and staying home if you are sick.

The different options for the reduction of a quarantine period are listed on the CDC’s website,

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/more/scientific-brief-options-to-reduce-quarantine.html.

Six Awardees Receive Specialty Crop Grant Funding

0

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture awarded more than $468,000 to six projects designed to grow the state’s specialty crop sector, funded by USDA’s Specialty Crop Block Grant program.

Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops.

“Our Hoosier farmers are leading producers of many fruits and vegetables, like tomatoes, mint and melons, which are so vital to our agricultural economy,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch. “This funding will allow these six projects to further develop the specialty crop sector to ensure continued success for years to come.”

The grants were awarded to non-profit organizations, academic institutions and government agencies on a three-year cycle and will fund specialty crop research, education and market development. To qualify, projects must aim to benefit the industry as a whole, rather than one product, individual or organization.

Some of the projects awarded this grant cycle include Purdue University developing an automated hand-hygiene verification observation system to monitor and verify that food handlers have thoroughly and effectively washed their hands and Indiana University identifying the steps needed to establish an Indiana-based supply chain for Indiana grown tree nuts.

Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler is looking forward to seeing the market development and research advancements that the projects find.

“This funding will allow the necessary research and development needed for the Indiana specialty crop sector to continue advancing,” said Kettler. “This sector is vital to our agriculture community and up to date education, research and marketing is crucial.”

The following list includes the organizations that received funding for the 2020-2023 grant cycle:

Illiana Watermelon Association – Marketing and Consumer Education Campaign to Promote Indiana Grown Watermelon

Award: $26,825.60

Project: The Illiana Watermelon Association will raise awareness of the Indiana watermelon industry and educate consumers on the health benefits and versatility of Indiana grown watermelon. Through geo-track marketing, social media marketing and setting up booths at community events, the Illiana Watermelon Association will be able to educate consumers on the health benefits of Indiana grown watermelon and drive consumption.

Indiana Grown – Promotional Marketing for Indiana Farmers Markets

Award: $63,000.00

Project: The goal of this project is to work with Indiana farmers markets to boost demand for local produce, build a stronger producer-consumer relationship and increase sales in the local markets.  Indiana Grown will develop and implement an organizational marketing plan to assist the market masters to increase sales and consumption of specialty crops at farmers markets.

Indiana University – Indiana Tree Nuts: Building Supply Chains for Indiana grown Chestnut, Hazelnut, Pecan and Walnut

Award: $82,954.80

Project: Indiana University will identify the steps needed to establish an Indiana-based supply chain for Indiana grown chestnuts, hazelnuts, pecans and walnuts by conducting a supply chain assessment and hosting grower education workshops. The focus will be on the feasibility of building Indiana’s nut aggregation and processing capacity, to increase the amount of value created by Indiana grown nuts.

Purdue University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – Hand Hygiene Verification using Video Analytics

Award: $179,252.85

Project: Purdue University will design, build, implement and evaluate an automated hand-hygiene verification observation system that uses automated video analytics to monitor and verify that food handlers have thoroughly and effectively washed their hands. The system will consist of commercially available cameras, a low-cost laptop computer and a video analytics algorithm designed to verify that the necessary steps of hand-hygiene have occurred in the proper order and for a sufficiently long time.

Purdue University Department of Food Science – Virtual and Interactive On-farm Education Program for Fruit & Vegetable Farmers

Award: $58,756.95

Project: This project aims to develop a virtual and interactive food safety education program for Hoosier produce farmers to help them better understand the regulations and provide guidelines for various on-farm manufacturing. Train-the-trainer program will also be developed for regulators and extension educators to help them better communicate with farmers about the on-farm manufacturing. Our ultimate goal is to develop this virtual and interactive on-farm manufacturing education program for Hoosier produce farmers to produce more wholesome and safe value-added products and to thrive with an increased profit and income.

Purdue University Entomology Department – Developing Best Management Practices for the Asiatic Garden Beetle in Commercial Mint Production

Award: $58,134.30

Project: Purdue University entomologists will partner with commercial mint producers in the state to grow our knowledge of the Asiatic garden beetle (Maladera castanea), hereafter AGB, and its management in mint systems. The goals of this project are to: (1) establish flexible economic thresholds for AGB in commercial mint fields, (2) evaluate insecticide efficacy against AGB grubs in mint and (3) develop a self-sufficient extension program to support grower efforts to manage AGB in Indiana mint production systems. Upon completion, these objectives will contribute to the development and implementation of best management practices for AGB in Indiana mint.
