Meridian St. Indianapolis, in the parking lot directly across from the building. Staff and volunteers will be present to guide arriving veterans and their families.

This is part of an ongoing effort to find and thank all 130,000 Vietnam-era veterans living in Indiana. Veterans who order their gift online can pick up their gift at various other events held throughout the year, all across the state.

Indiana Vietnam Vets Gift

A collaboration with the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) & Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans (WHVV) established the Indiana Vietnam Veterans Gift as an outreach program to honor and give thanks to Indiana veterans who served during the Vietnam War years, 1955 to 1975.

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans and community partners will hand-deliver the Indiana Vietnam Vets Gift. Indiana veteran service officers, Indiana businesses, churches, schools and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to announce and share this inofrmation, help veterans order the FREE gift and host events to recognize & bring honor to their veteran employees, members, students, volunteers and affiliates of their organizations and communities.

Special events will be scheduled throughout the year and the Vets Gift will be hand-delivered at these events and also to homebound veterans. If you or your company is interested in partnering to host an outreach event or to help deliver the gifts to homebound veterans, please send a request to events@whvv.org.

A bookmark will be placed inside every Vets Gift to encourage Indiana veterans to tell their story of service. If a veteran chooses to preserve their legacy, their own personal experiences will be documented and archived with the Veterans History Projectthrough the Library of Congress. This project makes accessible the personal accounts of American veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and gain a better understanding of the realities of war.

The Indiana Vietnam Veterans FREE gift will show gratitude and respect to Indiana veterans. It will also provide social awareness and historical value to multiple generations about the real accounts of the Vietnam War. All over the state of Indiana, the Vietnam Vets Gift and message will reinforce the idea that it is never too late to say “Thank You” and “Welcome Home”.

The Indiana Vietnam Vets Gift is an ongoing, collaborative effort until we find and thank the estimated 130,000 Vietnam veterans living in Indiana. Please check here for veteran events.

IU School Of Education Waives Some Tuition Fees For Graduate Students

IU School Of Education Waives Some Tuition Fees For Graduate Students

The IU School of Education will waive unremittable fees, or a small percentage of tuition that many IU graduate students must pay, for their fellowship students and student academic appointments beginning the fall 2021 semester, Sarah Lubienski, the associate dean for graduate studies at the School of Education, said.

The unremittable fees, which do not include mandatory fees, usually total about $1,000 per year for graduate students in the School of Education, Lubienski said. IU is the only university in the Big Ten that requires graduate students to pay unremittable fees.

“They often struggle to make ends meet during their graduate program,” she said regarding School of Education graduate students. “We wanted to help in this way since we definitely value the work that they do in our school.”

Lubienski said the School of Education is committed to keeping this change in the coming years. She said she has received positive feedback from students in regard to the elimination of unremittable fees.

Chelsea Brinda, an associate instructor and graduate student in the School of Education, said it was a huge relief when she found out the unremittable fees were eliminated.

“I’m not sure why it wasn’t just a change made for everyone,” she said. “I’m definitely really happy to see that the graduate school within the School of Ed has made that change.”

Brinda said she would like to see more secure funding for graduate student departments. She said her department, curriculum and instruction is not guaranteed funding every year, which can be a barrier to a secure income.

She said she believes that her funding may be readjusted based on performance evaluation. According to the School of Education website, education graduate students can receive funding through IU assistantships and fellowships, which can provide stipends, health insurance and tuition benefits depending on the funding package.

According to a Feb. 3 document titled “Understanding Ph.D. student support at Indiana University Bloomington” from Provost Lauren Robel, the university expects that t students may need to rely on other sources for income.

“As with other parts of their education, students pursuing doctoral education rely in addition on other sources of funding, such as educational loans, summer employment, and partner and daily contributions,” Robel said.

“It’s a real struggle for us,” she said. “I’m really hoping that someone will be willing to listen and understand that this isn’t enough for us.”

Cole Nelson, an organizer with the Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition, said he is excited the School of Education took the step, especially following the elimination of some graduate fees in the College of Arts and Sciences last year. COAS removed an average of $1200 in graduate fees last year, according to the document from Robel.

“Seeing the School of Ed follow suit was something that we were very excited to see, especially because now we are starting to see a trend that COAS started to expand throughout the campus,” Nelson said.

All IU-Bloomington schools reviewed school-based graduate student fees within the past two years, according to the document from Robelt. Other schools decided to change stipends in an effort to aid graduate students, similar to the elimination of certain fees in COAS and the School of Education.

The Luddy School of Informatics increased graduate student stipends by 10% for this fiscal year. The Jacobs School of Music plans to increase graduate student stipends for the next fiscal year to offset program fees specific to the music school, according to the document from Robel.

Nelson said the coalition is working to find out more information about the music school stipend increase. He said the music school has not confirmed the increase with their graduate students through email, so he said he is not sure if it will happen.

“Even so, we have a number of concerns about it, at least about what we’ve learned so far,” he said.

Nelson said the music school stipend increase would only cover music school Ph.D. students, leaving out about 40 master’s students who receive stipends from the school.

Eagles erupt for combined 14 runs in DH sweep of Quincy

0

University of Southern Indiana Softball erupted for a combined 14 runs off 22 hits in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Quincy University Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.

The Screaming Eagles (4-9, 2-4 GLVC), who hit a combined eight doubles on the day, won the opener, 9-1, in five innings. They completed the sweep with a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Allie Goodin (Evansville, Indiana) went a combined 4-of-7 at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBI to lead the Eagles on the day, while senior leftfielder Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) and freshman centerfielder Mackenzie Bedrick(Brownsburg, Indiana) each extended their respective hitting streaks to 17 and 10 games.

Game 1: USI 9, QU 1 (5 inn.)
Playing at home for the first time since April 13, 2019, the Eagles exploded for four runs in their first turn at the plate in the last half of the first inning. The Eagles had four hits in the opening frame, three of which were of the extra-base variety, as they jumped out to a commanding 4-0 advantage.

Webb and Goodin each had RBI-doubles in the first inning, while sophomore second baseman Rachel Martinez (Chicago, Illinois) drove in two runners with a double to leftfield.

USI tacked on two more tallies in the second inning to extend its advantage to 6-0. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Rager (Fishers, Indiana) had an RBI-double to push across the first run, while sophomore designated player/catcher Sammie Kihega (Greenfield, Indiana) drove in the second run with an RBI-single.

USI tacked on three more tallies in the fourth frame as Goodin and junior third baseman Mary Bean (Schaumburg, Illinois) each had RBI-singles.

Quincy (8-16, 3-8 GLVC) capitalized on a lead-off triple to score a tally in the top of the fifth inning, but junior pitcher/infielder Maddie Duncan (Lynnville, Indiana) was able to hold the Hawks to the single tally and give the Eagles the win via the eight-run rule.

Goodin (2-4) got the win for the Eagles as she surrendered just one hit while striking out five batters in four scoreless innings inside the circle.

Game 2: USI 5, QU 0
Junior pitcher Katie Back (Indianapolis, Indiana) recorded her second-career shutout as USI turned out another strong effort at the plate in the second game.

The Eagles got a two-run double from Goodin in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead; then got solo tallies in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames to win going away. Webb posted her second double in as many innings to push across USI’s run in the fourth inning, while Back hit a solo home run in the fifth to put the Eagles up, 4-0.

Martinez had an RBI-single in the sixth to cap off the Eagles’ offensive output.

Back (2-4), meanwhile, was sharp in the circle, allowing just four hits and one walk, while fanning three batters. She retired 12 straight batters before giving up a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning.

Up Next
The Eagles host Truman State University in a GLVC doubleheader Sunday at noon at the USI Softball Field. The Bulldogs (7-13, 4-6 GLVC) suffered a pair of road losses to McKendree University (7-1 and 4-3) Saturday in Lebanon, Illinois.

Notes
Kihega drew four walks in the second game, tying the program record for walks in a single game, which had been done six times by five different players prior to Kihega’s four-walk performance Saturday…Kihega enters Sunday’s twinbill with Truman State having drawn a walk in five straight at-bats after she was issued a free pass in her final at-bat of the opening game.

Softball sweeps Saturday doubleheader over Valpo

Aces win 16th game of the season

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Four University of Evansville players belted home runs on Saturday when the Purple Aces softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Valparaiso at Cooper Stadium.

Game one saw the Aces (16-7, 4-1 MVC) finish with a close 2-1 victory before UE rallied from a 4-3 deficit to post the final five runs in an 8-4 win over Valpo (5-14, 1-4 MVC).

Game 1

Valparaiso stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first and Eryn Gould wasted little time in taking advantage, leading off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to deep center field.  Evansville added a second run in the frame on a Jessica Fehr single.  Valpo cut the lead in half when Taylor Tonoian homered to left field in the top of the fourth.

The Aces had a chance to add some insurance in the bottom half of the sixth when pinch runner Mackenzie McFeron stole second before reaching third with one out, but Valpo escaped the jam unscathed to keep it a 1-run game.  It would not make a difference in the end with Izzy Vetter sitting VU down in order in the seventh co clinch her seventh win of the season.  Valpo had three hits while the Aces posted two, both being RBI knocks in the first.  UE did reach base with six walks; Gould and Jenna Lis registered two apiece.

Game 2

In the second contest, Valpo once again had early baserunners but took advantage when they got on the board in the top of the second.  Three hits, including an RBI from Lauren Kehlenbrink, saw them take a 1-0 lead.  It did not take long for the Aces to respond.  A Lis walk was followed by a Jessica Fehr single.  That is when Lindsay Renneisen belted her fifth home run of the season to give UE a 3-1 lead.

Valpo continued to put runners on base as the first three batters in the third would reach before scoring their second run on another Kehlenbrink single.  Jaime Nurrenbern limited the damage to just one run to keep UE in front at 3-2, but Valparaiso continued to battle and would go back in front in the fifth when Alexis Johnson tripled to right-center.

Evansville answered in the bottom of the frame when a 2-run home run by Katie McLean, her first of the season, put Evansville back on top.  Also scoring on the play was Eryn Gould, who walked earlier in the inning.  Following a Haley Woolf base hit, Marah Wood added the Aces third homer of the game to push the lead to 7-4 before Gould added an RBI single in the sixth.  That was all the insurance the Aces would need as Erin Kleffman picked up her third win of the year in an 8-4 final.

Picking up two hits apiece for UE were Haley Woolf, Fehr and Wood while Renneisen paced the team with three RBI.  In total, the Aces registered nine hits while Valpo checked in with 11.  Jaina Westphal had a team-high three hits.

Tomorrow morning, the teams meet up for the third and final game of the season at 11 a.m. inside Cooper Stadium.

USI bashes way to DH sweep

0

University of Southern Indiana Baseball exploded for 20 total runs in a doubleheader sweep at Maryville University Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI took the opener, 10-5, and the nightcap, 10-4.

The Screaming Eagles go to 6-11 overall and 4-7 in the GLVC, after today’s action, while Maryville is 7-9 overall, 5-4 GLVC.

GAME 1:
USI blasted four home runs in the opener to defeat Maryville, 10-5, to begin the doubleheader.

Eagles’ junior third baseman Michael Conner started the scoring in the first inning with a two-run shot to give USI a 2-0 lead. The advantage did not last long as the Saints scored four times in the bottom half of the opening frame to put the Eagles in a 4-2 hole.

USI started to take control in the second inning when sophomore centerfielder Austin Moody narrowed the deficit to 4-3 with a round-tripper to left field. Moody’s home run ignited eight unanswered runs putting the Eagles in command.

The Eagles moved into the lead for good, 7-4, with a four-run fourth, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by junior leftfielder Bryce Krizan. USI pushed the margin to 9-4 in the fifth when senior rightfielder Manny Lopez and junior designated hitter Aaron Euler hit back-to-back blasts before the Eagles finished its eight-run surge with a tally in the sixth.

The Saints would add a tally in the bottom of the seventh to conclude USI’s 10-5 victory.

On the mound, junior right-hander Brady Bowling picked up the win in relief. Bowling allowed one run on one hit, while striking out four in 3.2 frames of work.

Game 2:
The Eagles completed the doubleheader sweep behind the hot hitting of the top of the lineup and a strong start from senior right-hander Jacob Bowles in a 10-4 victory

The one through four hitters in the USI line-up combined for seven hits, five runs scored, and nine of the 10 RBI as the Eagles scored one in the first and second; two in the third; one in the fourth; and five in the sixth for the victory.

USI junior second baseman Ethan Hunter let the way, going three-for-four with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Freshman first baseman Adam Wildeman led way in run in production with a three RBIs, while senior rightfielder Manny Lopez hit his second home run of the doubleheader.

Bowles (1-2) posted his first win of the season, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out five in 6.1 innings of work. USI sophomore left-hander Sammy Barnett got the final two outs for Bowles to close out the victory.
