University of Southern Indiana Track & Field is sending three individuals and their women’s distance medley relay team to the NCAA II Indoor Championships. There were also two other Screaming Eagles named All-Midwest Region announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Tuesday evening.

Senior Jennifer Comastri qualified for the 5000m in the NCAA II Indoor Championships. Comastri recorded her best qualifying time at the Washburn Ichabod Invite with a speedy, sub-17 minute, 16:59.54. Comastri’s 5000m time is currently ranked 13th fastest in all Division II and rewarded her with All-Midwest Region accolades.

Sophomore Mckenna Cavanaugh is an NCAA II qualifier in the 3000m with her performance at the Washburn Ichabod Invite where she clocked in at 9:37.78. Cavanaugh’s 3000m time currently sits at 12th in the nation.

Freshman Allison Morphew, sophomore Kaylee Lane, sophomore Emma Brown and sophomore Cavanaugh make up the distance medley relay team that secured a spot in the NCAA II Indoor Championships with a time of 11:48.10 at the UIndy Last Chance Meet last weekend. USI’s DMR time is currently ranked 15th in the Division II.

University of Southern Indiana Baseball swept doubleheader from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, winning both games, 9-0, Friday at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles go to 10-11 overall and 8-7 in the GLVC, after today’s action, while UMSL is 5-17 overall, 3-12 GLVC.

Game 1:
USI sophomore outfielder Austin Moody and sophomore right-hander Garrett Welch led the Eagles to a 9-0 shutout of the Tritons in the opening game of the doubleheader.

The Eagles jumped out in front early with three runs in the opening frame to lead, 3-0. USI would add a tally in the third and seal the victory with five in the fifth to complete the scoring of the 9-0 victory.

Moody led the way at the plate for the Eagles, going three-for-four with two runs scored and two RBIs. The sophomore also was a triple shy of the cycle, after hitting a home run in the third.

Senior leftfielder Bryce Krizan also added three hits in the victory with a three-for-three performance. Krizan crossed the plate with a run and drove in another in the victory.

Welch threw six of the seven innings of the opening game victory to get his second win of the season. The sophomore hurler blanked the Tritons on five hits and two walks, while tying a season-best with six strikeouts.

Game 2:
Eagles’ senior right-hander Jacob Bowles blanked the Triton for six innings on one hit as USI completed the doubleheader sweep of UMSL, 9-0, in the nightcap. The victory moves USI over the .500 mark for the first time in the GLVC since the beginning of the league schedule.

Bowles (2-2) allowed one hit in six scoreless frames, while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts in a dominating performance.

Offensively, USI scored all nine of its runs in the first three innings, posting a three-spot in each frame. UE drops two games on Friday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Taking to the road for the first time in its 2021 Missouri Valley Conference schedule, the University of Evansville softball team fell to UNI in both games of a doubleheader on Friday at the Robinson-Dresser Complex.

Evansville (17-10, 5-3 MVC) dropped the opener by a 22-7 final before the Panthers (14-13, 6-2 MVC) finished the day with a 14-0 win.  Highlighting the day for UE was Bella Coffey, who belted a grand slam in Friday’s opener.  It was the first home run of her UE career.

Game 1

A 15-run fourth inning saw UNI turn a 7-6 lead into a 22-6 advantage.  Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Marah Wood hit a leadoff single and would later score on a hit by Lindsay Renneisen.  UNI came back with three runs in both the second and third frames, but Evansville came through with a big effort in the fourth.  Haley Woolf led off with a double before before scoring on a Jenna Lis hit.  Jessica Fehr and Renneisen walked to load the bases for Bella Coffey, who hit the first home run of her career – a grand slam.  Her hit got UE back within one run at 7-6.

The Panthers did not let the Aces get any closer, scoring an unbelievable 15 runs in the bottom half of the fourth to put the game out of reach.  Sammey Bunch led the way for UNI, going 2-2 with seven RBI and five runs scored.  She hit two homers.

Game 2

In the second contest, UNI opened with two runs in the first and did not look back, pulling away for a 14-0 victory.  Emmy Wells and Daryn Lamprecht each posted three RBI in the win.  Evansville had three hits with Jessica Fehr recording two and Jenna Lis adding a double.  The Panthers offense erupted for 15 hits in the contest.

Tomorrow, the Aces look to finish the series on a winning note with a single game at 11 a.m.
