Otters lose 10-3 in series finale against Grizzlies

0

Thanks to two home runs and an offensive surge, the Gateway Grizzlies impressed their fans on the Fourth of July with a 10-3 rubber match win over the Evansville Otters.

Gateway opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, when Dylan Jones came home to score from third on a 3-6-3 double play. The Grizzlies thus took a 1-0 lead against Otters’ starter Austin Gossmann.

Gateway broke the game open in the top of the fourth, as Dustin Woodcock hit a two-run homer that left GCS Credit Union Ballpark, giving the Grizzlies a 3-0 advantage. Gateway would add their third and final run of the inning after Ty Moore hit a two-out RBI single, driving home Nick Rotola. Gateway then led 4-0.

There the score would hold until the bottom of the seventh, when the Grizzlies piled on for a five-run seventh. Samson Abernathy relieved Austin Gossmann after he had tossed six innings of four-run ball, striking out five and walking none.

After two one-out singles off Abernathy, Andres Regnault smacked his third home run of the series, hitting a three-run shot to right field. Gateway picked up two more runs as Connor Owings and Justin Jones managed back-to-back, two-out RBI doubles off of Otters reliever Jacob Bowles, who was relieved after a two-out walk to Nick Rotola. The score was then 9-0.

The Otters put their first and only runs on the board in the top of the eighth, when Riley Krane hit a three-run home run to right, his sixth of the season.

Gateway added another run in the bottom half of that inning, as Ty Moore scored on an RBI-double from Dustin Woodcock against Justin Lewis, who gave up just the one run in his one inning of relief. From there the score would hold, 10-3.

Jordan Barrett (2-3) earned the win, while Austin Gossmann (2-2) took the loss.

Evansville will return home for a six-game homestand that opens Tuesday against the Joliet Slammers. First pitch in that game will be at 6:35 p.m.

Tuesday is Taco Tuesday at Bosse Field, featuring tacos, nachos, frozen margaritas, walking tacos, and discounted Corona and Modelo.

City-County Observer Announces 2021 “Person-Of-The-Year” Winner

Mayor Winnecke Is Selected As The City-County Observer 2021 “Person-Of-The-Year” Winner

July 2021

The City-County Observer is pleased to announce a new award that will be made annually to honor the “Person of the Year” in Greater Evansville. The first honoree of
this prestigious award is none other than Evansville’s 3-term Mayor Lloyd Winnecke (R).

Winnecke was elected to the office of Mayor of Evansville in the fall of 2011 and assumed office in January of 2012. His calm demeanor and collaborative style had been apparent throughout his career in banking and journalism. His basic personality traits have made Mayor Winnecke a pleasant person to be around. He is also an excellent communicator.

As a candidate for mayor, Winnecke promised to serve as “Evansville’s Ambassador Of Good Will,” and that is a role he has so
far played effectively. Mayoral candidate Winnecke also made a commitment to energize Evansville’s downtown after
years of decay and many false starts by his predecessors. Today, downtown Evansville has the potential of becoming an energetic business and shopping destination in the Tri-State, with a growing population base and an expanding array of retail establishments. As a native of Evansville, Mayor Winnecke witnessed the demise of downtown Evansville that was accelerated when the Washington Square and Eastland Malls were opened on the East Side. When retail pulled out, people did too, leaving downtown Evansville as
a shell of its former self. It was Winnecke’s diligence and calmly staying the course
that seemly have brought people back to

downtown Evansville to live. His steady hand on the plow finally seeded downtown Evansville for future sustainable prosperity.

Mayor Winnecke has also learned to let go of the past when it is appropriate to do so,
as has been exhibited in the demolition of some long-standing but, obsolete buildings including the 420 Building that was the home of Old National Bank and the Petroleum
Club for many decades. The reality has been apparent that some of the older buildings were functionally obsolete for years, and Winnecke realized this. He found creative ways to navigate through the maze of State and Federal bureaucratic rules and regulations to find the funds for future housing, retail and commercial development.

Mayor Winnecke is likable and also can take a joke very well, even when the joke is on him. In his early days as Mayor of Evansville, his enthusiasm and love for Evansville and its people did lead to some hilarious moments like the chicken fat video that was made to promote healthy living. Much fun was made of the video, and Winnecke took it all in stride while positioning himself to become the first Mayor of Evansville and attempt to reverse

the decline of the downtown. He had to make a multi-million dollar decision to repair and replace our dilapidated water and sewer system, pushed for the needed renovations to our Zoo, and spearheaded the effort to build the much-needed Aquatic Complex

in the North Main area. He was one of the masterminds to help work around the tedious process of locating the IU Medical School Downtown and he was a strong advocate

for the funding and the building of the Downtown Doubletree Hotel.

Finally, for his perseverance, kindness, and leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, the City-County Observer is proud to announce that Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will receive our first “Person of the Year Award” at our annual awards luncheon on September 16, 2021, at Evansville-Tropicana.

Also at this annual event, local attorney Charles L. Berger, retired and The Honorable Vanderburgh Superior Court Judge Rich D’Amour, retired Vanderburgh County Treasurer Susan Kirk, State Senator Veneta Becker, Alex Burton, and Lisa Vaughn
and Mayor Winnecke will receive our “Outstanding Community Services Award” for 2021.

In a couple of weeks, we shall announce who our guest speaker will be and how to make reservations for this well-attended community event.

FOOTNOTE: We would also like to recognize Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer for his supportive role in helping Mayor Winnecke to achieve his level of success during challenging times.

Braun Blast Biden Administration For Revoking Indiana’s Gateway To Work Program

1

Senator Mike Braun, Senator Todd Young, Representative Trey Hollingsworth, Congresswoman Victoria Spartz, Congressman Larry Bucshon, Representative Greg Pence, Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, Congressman Jim Baird, and Representative Jim Banks today sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra expressing their disapproval of the Biden administration’s decision to revoke the Gateway to Work program, which would require certain able-bodied adult Healthy Indiana Plan members to report 20 hours of work, job training, volunteering, or school activities each month.

Exemptions to this community engagement requirement include students, pregnant women, the disabled, those over 60 or medically frail, and other reasons.

“We write today to express our dismay that, under your watch, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) withdrew authorities enjoyed by the State of Indiana through its Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) that permit our state to determine appropriate work and community engagement requirements for its Medicaid recipients,” Senators Braun, Young and Representatives Hollingsworth, Spartz, Bucshon, Pence, Walorski, Baird, and Banks write in their letter to Secretary Becerra.

Indiana was granted a waiver by the Trump Administration to design programs that provide Medicaid enrollees with community engagement activities to improve their quality of life in the long-term. Similar — but not identical — requirements have been struck down in recent years in other states such as New Hampshire, Arkansas, and Kentucky, but by federal courts — not federal agency bureaucrats.

“It is curious that HHS and CMS are curtailing the ability of our state to innovate in the best interest of Hoosiers, and resorting to fear tactics that paint a misleading impression that the Gateway to Work program will result in ‘significant coverage losses and harm to beneficiaries.’ This statement is far from the truth and ignores the extensive list of individuals exempt from participating in Gateway to Work, including students, pregnant women, the medically frail or incapacitated, caregivers, the disabled, those over 60, those with a Substance Use Disorder, TANF/SNAP recipients, and others.”

The Indiana representatives note in their letter that Gateway to Work program is intended to put Hoosiers receiving Medicaid through the Healthy Indiana Plan on the path toward gainful employment:

“Our state has low unemployment, employers looking to hire, educational and training opportunities abound, and yet your agency is making decisions to curtail our state’s ability to connect our Medicaid recipients to a network of community engagement that makes sense for Hoosiers.”

Read their full letter to Secretary Becerra here.

Consumer Alert: Products Recalled

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Attorney General Todd Rokita is encouraging Hoosiers who purchased consumer products that were recalled in June to take advantage of the remedies available to them.

“Hoosiers, you do not have to put up with faulty products,” Attorney General Rokita said. “If something you purchased was recently discovered to be defective, don’t wait to act. Find out what the company that made the product is offering as a solution and take advantage of it.”

The following consumer products were recalled in June, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

If you believe you purchased a recently recalled product, stop using it. Then, check its recall notice (linked above for all aforementioned products) and follow the notice’s instructions. Generally, the instructions will include directions about where to return the product, how to get the product fixed, how to dispose of the product, how to receive a refund for the product, or what steps must be taken to receive a replacement product.
