Former Otter McGuff Hired As Brewers MiLB Coach

0

Former Evansville Otters pitcher Patrick McGuff has been hired by the Milwaukee Brewers organization to be a player development coach at the minor league level.

It has yet to be determined where McGuff will be assigned in the Brewers’ farm system, but McGuff is likely to be assigned to one of the Brewers’ Single-A affiliates, starting his Minor League coaching career with either the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers or the Low-A Carolina Mudcats.

“It couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Otters pitching coach Max Peterson stated. “He was always looking to learn and grow as a player, and it continued in his career as a coach.”

“I’m excited to see what his future holds because it’s very bright. Patrick is one of the best people I’ve met in this game.”

Most recently, McGuff spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the South Carolina Upstate baseball program, working with the pitchers. McGuff helped their pitching staff become one of the best in the Big South Conference and highly ranked among many statistical categories on a national level.

At the end of the 2021 season, Upstate ranked 16th in the NCAA in ERA (3.68), while leading the Big South in strikeouts per nine innings (9.1). The Spartans also recorded a 1.32 WHIP, good for 37th in the nation.

McGuff was a starting pitcher for the Evansville Otters for parts of 2018 and 2019. He was signed out of Evansville in 2018 by the Cincinnati Reds organization and signed from the Otters in 2019 by the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

The former 36th round MLB draft pick out of Morehead State was one of the most dominant starters in the Frontier League while with the Otters.

McGuff combined to go 8-1 with a 1.25 ERA. In 11 total starts and 72 innings pitched, he struck out 86 batters.

In his last start in an Otters’ uniform on June 7, 2019, against the Schaumburg Boomers, McGuff went the distance, tossing a shutout. That day, he struck out 11 and had only a single hit off him.

New Harmony Gallery Hosts Exhibition, PAÑUELXS

0

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art’s (NHGCA) newest exhibition, PAÑUELXS, will open Saturday, January 22 and run through Saturday, March 5. PAÑUELXS, featuring works by Chicago-based artist Vanessa Viruet, includes textile works and sculpture in the main gallery exhibition space and features a temporary public art piece in New Harmony’s Maclure Square, across the street from the gallery.

A closing reception will be held at the NHGCA from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, March 5. Masks are required in all University buildings in accordance with USI’s COVID-19 policy.

Viruet utilizes materials like bandanas, hoop earrings, cars and found objects to investigate gender roles, cultural identity and socioeconomic experiences. In PAÑUELXS, large-scale installations, printed fabric, shiny objects and repetitive patterns using bold shapes and colors serve as symbols or “flags” to share communal and personal stories.

PAÑUELXS (a play on the Spanish word for “hanky”) explores the various ways in which we present ourselves. Utilizing the gallery’s exhibition space as the hyper-feminine “interior space” and an outdoor site-specific installation as a hyper-masculine “public space,” Viruet flamboyantly displays expressions of identity. While creating a shared space that speaks to community experience, PAÑUELXS is also a space to celebrate Viruet’s own experience as Queer, Latina and a first-generation college graduate.

Viruet is a fiber artist of Puerto Rican descent. She creates monumental scale artworks to examine the complex histories rooted in textiles such as identity, cultural heritage, gender and class. Viruet holds a BFA and a MA in teaching from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She currently serves as an art instructor for Chicago Public Schools and teaches in the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

NHCGA is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The gallery promotes discourse about and access to contemporary art in the southern Indiana region.

This exhibition is made possible in part by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the state of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts.

NHCGA is a proud outreach partner of the University of Southern Indiana.

Four Hoosiers Win Big Ten Weekly Awards

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second time this season four Indiana student-athletes earned Big Ten weekly awards following IU’s dual meet versus No. 11/15 Louisville, the conference office announced Wednesday (Jan. 19).

Swimmer of the week Brendan Burns, diver of the week Carson Tyler and freshman of the week Rafael Miroslaw combined to sweep the men’s awards after they helped the Hoosiers dominate Louisville, 205-95. Senior diver Kristen Hayden added to the tally, winning Big Ten Women’s Diver of the Week laurels.

Between its men’s and women’s teams, eight Indiana student-athletes have collected 14 such awards over five weeks of eligibility this season.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week: Brendan Burns

Junior Brendan Burns continued his fantastic campaign with his fourth conference award of the season and fifth of his career. Burns won and posted NCAA B cut times in all three individual races he swum and helped his relay group to a third-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay.

The Berwyn, Pennsylvania, native, won both the 200 and 100-Yard Butterfly via significant times. His 1:40.72 in the 200 ranks No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in the Big Ten, and his 45.49 in the 100 comes in at No. 8 nationally and No. 2 in the conference.

Burns also won the 200 Backstroke, finishing two seconds ahead of the competition with a 1:41.18.

Men’s Diver of the Week: Carson Tyler

Freshman Carson Tyler won both diving events Friday to capture his third conference award and second diver of the week selection.

In the 1-meter dive, Tyler posted a season-best 411.83 to win the event by over 46 points. He followed it up with a 387.60 in the 3M to edge out Louisville’s Daniel Pinto (379.58) and fellow Hoosier freshman Quinn Henninger (378.38).

Both scores came as NCAA Zone Qualifying marks. Tyler has tallied such scores in all 10 events he has competed in this season.

Men’s Freshman of the Week: Rafael Miroslaw

Freshman Rafael Miroslaw collected his first-career Big Ten weekly award by dominating in the freestyle events. Like Burns, Miroslaw won three of his four races, then finished fourth in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a 20.00.

The Hamburg, Germany, native started his day with a triumph in the 200 Freestyle, touching the wall in 1:33.39. He followed that performance with a win the 100 Free in 43.10. To close the evening Miroslaw posted a 42.54 split as the anchor in IU’s 400 Freestyle Relay victory.

Women’s Diver of the Week: Kristen Hayden

Senior Kristen Hayden earned her second-career Big Ten Diver of the Week award, first since 2018 and first since becoming a Hoosier. The Hillsborough, New Jersey, native won both diving events Friday.

Hayden set a career-best mark in the 1-meter dive, scoring a 319.50, the third-highest mark by an IU female diver this season. Hayden also won the 3-meter dive by almost 20 points with a 362.10. Both scores were NCAA Zone Qualifying marks.

Second half rally pushes #22 Loyola to win over Aces

UE set for home-and-home this weekend with Illinois State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Jawaun Newton, Shamar Givance and Noah Frederking scored in double figures on Tuesday when the University of Evansville men’s basketball team fell to #22 Loyola by a final of 77-48 inside the Ford Center.

Newton led the Purple Aces (4-12, 0-5 MVC) with 13 points while Givance finished with 12.  Frederking was a perfect 3-for-3 from outside on his way to an 11-point outing.  Evan Kuhlman paced the team with five rebounds while tying for the team lead with three assists.  Leading the Ramblers (14-2, 5-0 MVC) was Lucas Williamson, who converted five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points.  Chris Knight added 12 points for the Ramblers.

“We have played some good basketball, but have not been able to do it consistently.  When you are trying to develop and build, you are likely to struggle,” UE head coach Todd Lickliter said following the game.  “I told the guys not to give in or feel sorry for ourselves.  We need to take away the positives and concentrate on putting together longer stretches of good basketball.”

A pair of 3-pointers got things going for UE, who jumped out to a 6-0 advantage.  Preston Phillips and Jawaun Newton hit the triples to give Evansville the early lead.  Both teams enjoyed early shooting success, combining to hit the first eight attempts of the night.  The Aces were 5-for-5 while the Ramblers knocked down their first three tries, leading to a 13-8 UE lead just over four minutes into the contest.

Loyola battled back, tying it at 13-13 at the 12:41 mark before going in front for the first time at 16-15.  A 9-0 run saw the Ramblers open up a 22-15 lead with 8:58 showing on the clock, but the Aces would not let them get too far in front, clawing back with Noah Frederking knocking down a triple to end the Rambler run.  Inside of seven minutes remaining, a basket by Newton tied the score at 22-22.

The Ramblers countered with a score on the other end on their way to completing the half on an 8-2 run to take a 30-24 halftime advantage.  After making their first five attempts of the night, UE hit four of the final 20 attempts while the Ramblers, who were 3-for-3 to open the game, hit six of their final 15 tries in the opening stanza.  Newton led all scorers with 11 at the break.

Things continued to trend in the Ramblers direction in the second half with back-to-back triples extending the lead to 15 points (46-31) before the advantage reached 20 points (51-31) with 11:36 showing on the clock.  Loyola would extend the advantage to as many as 31 in the final minutes before taking home a 77-48 decision.  UE finished the game shooting 32.7% while the Ramblers finished at 62.8% for the game while scoring the nets to the tune of 72.0% in the second half.  In the final 20 minutes, Loyola hit 6 out of 7 attempts from outside.

This weekend, the Aces will face Illinois State in a home-and-home series.  UE will be in Normal, Ill. on Friday for a 6 p.m. game with the return contest at the Ford Center set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
