“LIFESTYLE LIL” IS BACK HOME IN VANDERBURGH COUNTY
Written by “Life Style Lil“
New Society Editor for City-County Observer

I’m glad to be back in Southern Indiana after 11 years of traveling the world. Although I can speak five (5) languages fluently, my favorite language is good ole “SOUTHERN INDIANA TWANG”. All I can say about myself is, I was born, highly educated (7 college degrees) and presently living! In the near future look forward to meeting you all personally and sharing my tales of world travel and adventures with you all. Lately I have just been hanging out and enjoyed connecting with my roots once again. Though I am still grieving about the passing of my 9th husband, oil man, Wolfgang Franz from Germany I have rekindled an old flame with my high school sweetheart Mr. CCO Mole. We parted ways after high school due to his risky enlistment into the CIA. I hear he is now an undercover informant for the City-County Observer and look forward to hearing all about it at tonight’s romantic reunion dinner at Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano. It is my hope that a kid named Zach will be taking care of us as I hear he is Mr. CCO Mole’s favorite server in all of the county.

Oh, I want to personally thank the City County Observer for allowing me to write the new weekly life style-social column titled “Lifestyle Lil“. Hope you enjoy reading my unpredictable articles!

I am looking for a home that could be converted into a bed and breakfast located in the majestic Historical District, so I called Hahn Realtors. They sent Joe Kiefer to help me find the home of my dreams. Joe really knows his stuff! However, I am a bit fickle so I am still looking and am glad Joe is extremely patient. I am pleased to hear that the Old Evansville Historic Association is dedicating the time and resources needed to restore and maintain the Historical District. Their goal is the replacement of the old utilitarian sidewalk/street light fixtures with historically correct fixtures that provide ample lighting and promote safety and walk ability while preserving the areas historical character. I want to give a special thanks to OEHA members Elmer Buchta, Karen Timberlake, Pam Guthrie, Sherry Wright, Chuck Hudson, Cathie Hite, and Jamie Wicks. Hopefully we can get the city of Evansville to sign on as equal partners in this worthy community restoration project.

I needed new tires and detail was done on my car so I went to D-Patrick on North Green River Road. I must say the General Sales Manager, Tony Ricketts took excellent care of me. The detailed staff did an outstanding job on my car! I would highly recommend the ladies and gents at D-Patrick’s to anyone!

Of course, I had to change my auto insurance policy. I went to Torian-Hofmann-Dillow and Flittner for new car insurance. I met this guy, Bob Dillow and must say this guy is great at what he does. Not only did he save me a great deal of money but also increased my coverage.

Since I’m single-ish now, I decided to go out and paint town RED-BLUE and GREEN. Went to KC’S TIME OUT Lounge and Grill located in the Washington Square Mall and had a monster time. Great people, wonderful live music and nice atmosphere. Did I mention that a lot hot men go there? For you guys, the women are smoking hot also! This also happens to be where I ran into the Mole. Watching him talk his trash and woo the woman over made it obvious that he has not changed much after all of these years. What a piece of work.

They say in Evansville that “political games are the same but the names have change“! However it’s refreshing to see new females faces on the political scene such as Katharine Martin-Knight Township Trustee, Stephanie Terry-Vanderburgh County Council and Gail Reicken-State Representative District 77. I was surprised yet glad to see Connie Robinson still on Evansville City Council. I am really happy to see John Friend, CPA is still serving on Evansville City Council. I predict that a higher office awaits him in near future! Oh, John was my 6th husband’s CPA and did a remarkable job for him. Who is this new City Councilmen , Dan McGinn? I hear he’s someone to watch as an up-and-coming political star! Of course, I was really surprised to hear my favorite retired heart doctor, Dr. Dan Adams is also serving on the Evansville City Council. I know he shall do an outstanding job. Some friends also told me to watch a new member of the City Council by the name of Coner O’Daniel. They tell me that he is one heck of an attorney to boot. The real surprise came when I heard that my ole friend Scott Danks, who represented me through five divorces, is now legal Counsel for the Evansville City Council. I can tell you one thing; Scott is one he– of an attorney and he shall serve the council well!

Oh, you must try the WOK N Roll on South Green River road. They have absolutely outstanding food at inexpensive prices! Monster egg drop soup. While down the street at 4593 Washington avenue off Green River road is a Japanese restaurant called KANPI. Their Sushi, and Tempura dishes are great, and they offer lunch and Dinner specials daily.

OH, tell them “Life Style LIL,” told you about them!

Until next time, don’t take any wooden nickels! I’m on my way to give a lecture at Harvard University on “DSYFUNCTIONALITY”! I can guarantee that I know all about this subject! Anyone who has any social news can contact me at citycountyobserver@live.com!

Amore!
LIL Franz.

ELPERS OPPOSES PROPOSED INDIANA STATE LEGISLATURE TAX BILL

0

Justin Elpers Evansville City Council 5th Ward Rep Opposes TAX Bills By The Indiana State Legislature.

by 5th Ward Evansville City Councilman Justin Elpers

At this evening City Council meeting I will be addressing HB 1002 & SB 378.  These proposed bills by the Indiana State Legislature would phase out portions of the Business Personal Property Tax.

Both bills do not offer a replacement for the lost revenue.  If passed, local municipalities will find it harder to fund their essential budgetary needs.

Since the proposed legislation would have an adverse effect on the essential budgetary needs of the City of Evansville, tonight I shall be asking City Council for their support in sponsoring a Resolution asking our state legislature to vote down HB 1002 & SB 378.

https://iga.in.gov/legislative/2022/bills/house/1002

Link:  SB 378

https://iga.in.gov/legislative/2022/bills/senate/378

POSTED BELOW IS A COPY OF THE RESOLUTION THAT EVANSVILLE CITY COUNCILMAN JUSTIN ELPERS WILL BE PRESENTLY TO THE CITY COUNCIL THIS EVENING.

RESOLUTION OPPOSING LEGISLATION REGARDING THE BUSINESS PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX

WHEREAS, the Indiana legislature proposed changes to the depreciation floor and other aspects of Indiana’s business personal property tax as a priority in their 2022 legislative agenda;

WHEREAS, the Common Council of Evansville, Indiana, opposes all legislation that contemplates eliminating any portion of the personal property tax without permanent FULL replacement guaranteed by the state;

WHEREAS, any contemplated revenue replacement must be a source of revenue that continues to grow over time just as a property tax base would in order to allow growing communities to meet the demand for services;

WHEREAS a permanent state tax credit applied to ALL proposed business personal property tax reductions, holidays, phase-outs, etc., could eliminate unnecessary burden on local government in order to continue building healthy Indiana communities;

WHEREAS, the personal property tax is a relied upon method for funding local government;

WHEREAS for taxing units not at the caps, a reduction in the tax base could result in property owners paying more in residential property taxes and for those communities at the caps, any phase-out of the business personal property tax means a loss in revenue for local units of government;

WHEREAS, Business Personal Property Tax distributions to local units of government exceed $1 billion;

WHEREAS, significantly reducing the business personal property tax will have a dramatic impact on Evansville’s ability to repay tax increment financing bonds because a significant portion of the revenue backing the bonds comes from personal property;

WHEREAS, the Tax Foundation 2022 State Business Tax Climate Index lists Indiana as number one ranking for property tax; and

WHEREAS Indiana consistently ranks in the top states with an attractive business tax climate, yet a community’s quality of life is an increasingly greater influencer of business relocation and growth decisions.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of Evansville, Indiana, that we oppose all legislation that contemplates eliminating any portion of the business personal property tax without full and permanent replacement guaranteed by the state.

Passed and adopted by the Common Council of the City of Evansville, Indiana, on the ___ day of __________________, 2022, and signed by the President of the Common Council and attested by the City Clerk.

IU Health Awards Ivy Tech Grant to Expand Nursing Program

0

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana University Health, the state’s most comprehensive physician and hospital network, has awarded Ivy Tech Community College an $8.75 million grant to expand its nursing program and increase nursing student enrollment. The grant will be used for investments necessary to support expanded enrollment, such as faculty and staff recruiting and compensation, educational equipment and supportive services for students.

“Our healthcare systems in Indiana are in critical need of skilled nurses, and Ivy Tech is well-positioned l to deliver on this need,” said IU Health Executive Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive Jason Gilbert. “Currently there are qualified applicants each year in Indiana who are turned away from nursing schools due to limitations on teaching space, clinical placement availability and faculty resources. It is incumbent upon health systems, working with our educational partners, to support an expansion of the educational pipeline to allow more qualified students to become professional nurses. This partnership with Ivy Tech is a significant step toward expanding healthcare delivery to Hoosiers for generations to come.”

Labor market data from Emsi/Burning Glass estimates there are 4,300 annual openings for nurses today, with a need for another 5,000 nurses by 2031. That leaves a gap of 1,350 nursing graduates to meet Indiana’s need with current educational resources. The expanded nursing program at Ivy Tech will increase nursing admissions by 600 students annually by 2025, contributing significantly to filling the gap.

Ivy Tech currently offers nursing programs at 18 of its 19 campuses, with a program planned to launch at the remaining campus – Hamilton County — by early 2023. Ivy Tech currently graduates more than 1,300 associate-degree nursing students every year, more than any other institution in Indiana and the largest in the nation. Additionally, more than 90 percent of Ivy Tech nursing graduates stay in Indiana.

“This grant will be a huge step in helping Ivy Tech meet the needs of our health system partners in a real and practical way,” said Sue Ellspermann, president of Ivy Tech. “Our ability to educate nurses and keep them in our state will create real value for our economy and the health of Indiana. We’re very proud to partner with IU Health and appreciate its investment in our program.”

Ivy Tech has been developing a plan for increasing nursing enrollment that includes investments in equipment, supplies and faculty, as well as tools to better support nursing students in their academic success. The College estimates those investments will require $8.7 million in recurring costs over three years as well as $12.1 million in one-time costs.

Hostettler Bill Connect More Vets To Job Training, Educational Opportunities

0

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 20, 2022) – Legislation authored by State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka) would help Hoosier veterans and their spouses connect to available grants, scholarships and job training opportunities.

Hostettler said numerous state resources are dedicated to veterans, active duty military members and their families, and steps need to be taken to better inform them of those opportunities. His legislation would task the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs with providing information to veterans and their families about available services and programs.

“Hoosier veterans and their families sacrifice so much to keep us safe and it’s only right to support them,” Hostettler said. “Indiana already has so many great programs that can help lift up military families, and we need to make sure they’re aware of these resources.”

To better identify veterans who could benefit from programs, Hostettler’s legislation would also task state agencies including the Indiana Department of Education, the Family and Social Services Administration, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Indiana Department of Workforce Development and Indiana Professional Licensing Agency with asking those who they provide services to about their military affiliation and experience.

“State agencies are in contact with a number of Hoosiers with various backgrounds, and they could be a great first point of contact to help veterans,” Hostettler said. “I also want to help, and I encourage veterans and their family members to reach out to my office if they are in need of assistance or want to learn more about wide range of programs offered to those who served.”

House Bill 1188 is assigned to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and Public Policy. To learn more and watch legislative proceedings, visit iga.in.gov.

USI Mandela Social Justice Day To Feature Author, Musician Simon Tam

The University of Southern Indiana College of Liberal Arts Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee (LA EDIC) is partnering with the USI Nelson Mandela Social Justice Commemoration Committee to host a virtual event on February 24. The event is free and open to the public.

The keynote speaker for Mandela Social Justice Day, Simon Tam, will present “The Song of Change” at 3 p.m. February 24, and the presentation will be recorded and available on the Mandela Social Justice Day webpage at USI.edu/msjd.

Tam believes that apathy is not compatible with love. He works to change the culture by transforming systems with an equity framework, and he may best be known for winning a landmark case in 2017 which helped expand civil liberties, unanimously, at the Supreme Court of the United States (Matal v. Tam). He is the founder of The Slants, one of the first all-Asian American dance rock bands in the world, and co-founder of The Slants Foundation, a nonprofit organization pushing the boundaries of what is possible for arts, activism and civic engagement.

USI has sponsored the Nelson Mandela Social Justice Day and Speaker Series since 2014. The goal of these events is to raise dialogue at USI around current issues of human and civil rights, public service and activism through diverse, dynamic, nationally and internationally known public intellectuals and academics. Previous speakers include authors Manisha Sinha, Tim Wise and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, community organizer Tia Oso and academics and activists such as Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Angela Davis. Art Exhibit “David Unsupervised” On Display at UE

0

The University of Evansville (UE) presents “David Unsupervised,” an exhibit by David Gamble, on display at the Melvin Peterson Gallery through Saturday, February 26. The Melvin Peterson Gallery is located on Lincoln Avenue across the street from the UE campus.

The gallery is open to the public from noon until 3:00 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; and from noon until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

A public reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, February 3, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The reception will be held in the Melvin Peterson Gallery. Gamble will also conduct multiple workshops for art students while visiting.

The exhibit and reception are part of the Emerging Contemporary Artist Lecture Series, sponsored by the Efroymson Family Fund and the UE Department of Art.

David Gamble has over four decades of balancing art and business in the ceramics industry. While making clay art and teaching, he also developed products and designed marketing campaigns. Gamble has conducted hundreds of workshops in North America, and he has participated in five clay symposiums in Eastern Europe. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree and contributes an educational focus to the kilns and pottery wheels for Skutt Ceramic Products.

“The glaze surface has always interested me more than the sculptural possibilities in clay,” said Gamble. “I layer and multi-fire glaze combinations as if I were using oil paints. I have found I am able to produce what many might consider glaze defects, with some control. This allows me to achieve interesting surfaces, depth, and imagery like I were painting.”

For more information, contact the UE Art Department of Art at 812-488-2043, email art@evansville.edu, or visit the gallery’s Facebook page.
