Gov. Holcomb Announces That He Delivered On His Commitments Toward Equity And Opportunity In Indiana

0

INDIANAPOLIS– Today, Governor Eric J. Holcomb completed one of his August 2020 commitments to improve equity, inclusivity and opportunity by launching a public disparity data portal. The data dashboard delivers a view into current equity gaps that exist in health, public safety, social services, education and workforce. The information reveals key areas the state will focus on to address disparities in our communities and monitor overall progress throughout the state.

“I’m committed to removing the obstacles that perpetuate inequities in our communities. We must understand where we are before we can take steps toward achieving a truly level playing field,” said Gov. Holcomb. “Being transparent during the process is critical if we’re going to move forward together.”

In an August 2020 statewide address, Gov. Holcomb announced his intention to create Indiana’s first-ever Chief Equity, Inclusion and Opportunity officer (CEIOO). He appointed Karrah Herring to the cabinet role in November 2020 and she started in February 2021. Currently, CEIOO Herring is focused on creating and implementing a strategic plan to drive change in government culture and operations. Resources and information on this cabinet agency can be found on its newly created website here.  The website will also serve as an opportunity for the public to stay updated and connected with the CEIOO and provide a platform for the data portal.

“I’ve been connecting with stakeholders, community leaders, constituents and partners from across Indiana to better understand what resources and education are needed so that we can begin the journey toward systemic change,” Herring said. “The feedback I have received is the foundation of strategic initiatives my team is creating and implementing to move us toward opportunity and equity for all Hoosiers.”

Governor Holcomb also asked Commissioner of Higher Education Teresa Lubbers to work with DWD Director Fred Payne and the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet (GWC) to produce initial specific recommendations about how to create more opportunity for people of color by examining the state’s own workforce programs and policies. In response to that charge the GWC adopted recommendations at its meeting on Dec. 17, 2020, that included potential actions to ensure greater equity across the state’s talent development system.  A copy of these recommendations can be found here.

Governor Holcomb also announced his commitment to protect all citizens and state troopers by mandating the use of body cameras for every frontline Indiana State Police trooper in 2021. As of today, 509 personnel out of the nearly 800 troopers are equipped with body cameras. The remaining state troopers are expected to receive the equipment by Sept. 30.

Finally, Gov. Holcomb also announced a comprehensive third-party review of Indiana state police and law enforcement academy curriculum and training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). Hillard Heintze was selected in October 2020. The review is near completion and findings will be issued in early fall.

Vincennes University Kicks Off 2021-22 Academic Year With Optimism And Excitement

0
VINCENNES, Ind., August 12, 2021 – Vincennes University President Dr. Chuck Johnson opened the University’s 2021-22 academic year with messages of progress, success, and optimism.
Faculty and staff attended the annual Opening Meeting via Zoom on Monday, August 9, and there were many impressive highlights as members of the executive team shared progress made toward goals in VU’s strategic plan, “Going Further, Faster.”
Notably, VU increased fall-to-spring student retention to 80.9 percent from fall 2019 to spring 2020 (up from 78.3 percent in spring 2019), showing the University is closing in on its 2022 goal of 83 percent retention. This update came on the heels of a July 2021 report from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education showing that VU’s on-time graduation rate rose significantly to 33 percent for the cohort that began in fall 2018.
Driving the improvement in these metrics are the significant efforts VU has made in creating an environment that fosters student success. The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Council (DEI) is focused on ensuring that all students experience a successful and outstanding college journey. Resources and supports such as the Student Success Center, faculty advisors, academic coaches, Collaborative Opportunities for Postsecondary Education (COPE) program, Student Transition into Educational (STEP) program, Experience VU program, Knowledge Market, tracking attendance and performance of students system, Office of Diverse Abilities and Accommodations, and Counseling Center are readily available to every student.
Provost Dr. Laura Treanor reported on the University’s launch of Circleln, a National Science Foundation-funded all-in-one-studying app. It is VU’s latest initiative aimed at fostering success and enriching the experiences of students. The app enables them to connect outside of the classroom virtually with each other and with faculty. Treanor encourages all VU students to explore the new platform and to use the positive and personal connections created through it to their advantage.
VU invests in the success of its students through a variety of programs and initiatives. Johnson shared how VU has dedicated substantial funds toward residential scholarships on the Vincennes Campus along with an estimated half-million dollars in additional scholarships for the University’s sites and campuses.
Vice-President of Financial Services Linda Waldroup reported that VU and the VU Foundation enjoyed a stellar year and received more than $15 million in grants and donations. VU was the recipient of two major Lilly Endowment grants that will fund the creation of the Center for Applied Robotics and Automation, and the introduction of collaborative robots in VU labs at Vincennes, Jasper, Lebanon, and several of VU’s CTE Early Colleges throughout Indiana. Lilly grants will also support work-based learning opportunities, including the development of Techmester, a summer residential experience where CTE Early College students attend classes on the Vincennes campus, and a STEM Academy focused on high school students interested in learning about STEM careers and the postsecondary educational paths needed to pursue them.
Vice-President of Workplace Development and Community Services David Tucker stressed there are great opportunities for VU to make strides in workforce development, even during a pandemic. Tucker praised VU faculty and staff for making the Amazon Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship Program a huge success. He also pointed to other success stories, including new Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) chapters at the Aviation Technology Center in Indianapolis and Automation and Robotics Academy (ARA) at the VU Jasper Campus.
Faculty and staff were celebrated throughout the Opening Meeting. Peer Recognition Award recipients were announced, service anniversaries were recognized, and new hires and employees in new roles were introduced.
During the virtual gathering, Johnson strongly urged all students, staff, and faculty to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to help protect the health of the VU Community. VU has partnered with the Knox County Health Department and will host an on-campus vaccine clinic on Wednesday, August 24, at Green Activities Center, 2-6 p.m. EDT.
Friday marks the end of a key week for VU faculty and staff as they prepare for Fall Semester 2021. A series of professional development sessions took place throughout the week focusing on a wide range of topics, including VU’s Culture of Civility; Easing the Post-Pandemic Transition for Students; and Insight into Diversity: The Latino Community, led by Marlene Dotson, President and CEO of the Indiana Latino Institute, and colleagues Maria Quiroz-Southwood and Emily Price.
Fall classes begin Monday, August 16.

VANDERBURGH COUNTY GOP POLITICAL DIRECTOR MARY JO KAISER RETIRES TODAY

1

After 10 years the highly respected and extremely effective Political Coordinator for the Vanderburgh County GOP party is officially calling it quits.

Having worked 40 plus years as a Secretary/Administrative Assistant in the private sector for several different companies the idea of retiring had seemed like a perfect plan for political activist Mary Jo Kaiser.  However, it didn’t take Mary Jo Kaiser very long to realize retirement is not for everyone.

When then Vanderburgh County GOP Chairman, Wayne Parke, emailed her asking her if she knew someone interested in a part-time position with the Republican Party, she reached out to several women who were looking for a part-time job.  An AHA moment made her realize that this was an opportunity for her.

On Halloween, 2011, Mary Jo Kaiser started working part-time as the Political Coordinator for the Vanderburgh County Republican Party.  Some of the things that intrigued her, during her tenure at the Vanderburgh County GOP were:

  • Really enjoyed working with Lloyd Winnecke when he was running for Mayor of Evansville during his first term.  She had never seen a candidate “work the room” and was impressed with his sincerity with each person he met.
  • Election days were awesome from the time our campaign office opened until the end of the after-election event at 10:00 pm.  Watching our party official’s excitement as the results were announced was an intriguing experience.
  • Working with our dedicated appointed and elected officials over the years.

In June 2012, Mary Jo Kaiser was promoted to the position of Political Director of the Vanderburgh County Republican Party.  While the job did not change much, the opportunities over the next several years were amazing:

  • She really enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life while planning and coordinating social and political events.
  • Another exciting time for Mary Jo was when Governor Holcomb and his campaign team came to our campaign headquarters parking lot to have a rally.
  • She also served as a delegate at State Conventions in Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne, and Evansville.
  • Mary Jo said that the most exciting experience of her time in her position at local GOP was welcoming President Trump as he exited his car in the Ford Center on behalf of the senior citizens of Southern Indiana.  She said, “when he shook her hand, she felt his focus was totally on her during their brief conversation.  When they posed for pictures, he was standing behind me with his hands on her shoulders”.

Today Mary Jo Kaiser begins retirement for the second time in her working career. We wish her well in her new adventures, but hope she will take time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Mary Jo Kaiser has served her political party and community with dedication, class, and grace.

Otters march on to extra innings victory

0

The Evansville Otters rallied three times and scored six runs after the seventh inning to march on to an extra innings, walk-off victory over the Southern Illinois Miners by a final score of 9-8.

The Miners opened the scoring in the top of the first off of Otters’ starter Braden Scott, as Ariel Sandoval singled home Nolan Earley from second with two out to give Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead.

The Otters would flip the scorecard in the bottom of the second, when Miles Gordon drove in Dakota Phillips on a sacrifice fly and Andrew Penner singled home Andy DeJesus from third. After two innings of play, the Otters led 2-1.

The Miners would tie the game in the top of the fifth when Arturo Nieto doubled home Luke Mangieri from second. Southern Illinois wasted little time in regaining the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring twice on a double from Luke Mangieri to take a 4-2 advantage.

The Otters fell behind by their largest margin of the night when the Miners tallied another run in the top of the seventh, as Nolan Earley singled in Arturo Nieto from third before Ariel Sandoval drove in Bryant Flete with a sacrifice fly to center. Heading into the stretch, the Miners led 6-2.

Evansville would cut into the Miners’ lead in the bottom of the seventh when Jose Pujols scored from third on a wild pitch uncorked by reliever Blake Stelzer, pushing the score to 6-3.

Augie Gallardo and Joe Riley made their Otters debuts in relief of Scott’s start.

Heading into the penultimate frame, the Otters managed to tie the game thanks to a two-run triple for Miles Gordon and an RBI single for Jose Pujols. After eight innings the game was tied at 6-6.

Into the extra innings and the tenth inning, Logan Sawyer came on with the go-ahead run at second and nobody out, as the international tie-breaker rule came into effect. Following an infield error, Ariel Sandoval would hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game, before Jarrod Watkins would deliver a pinch-hit single that extended the Miners’ lead to two, 8-6.

The bottom of the tenth began with Dakota Phillips stationed at second as the international tie-breaker runner. In the first at-bat of the inning, Andy DeJesus put runners at the corners with a base hit to left. Then Miles Gordon brought the Otters within one with an RBI double that put the tying run at third with nobody out.

For the second time in the game, Jose Pujols would tie the game, this time in the bottom of the tenth and with a sac fly to center. Miles Gordon, the winning run, advanced on the fly ball. After Andrew Penner was hit by a pitch, Gary Mattis stepped to the plate with one out and a chance to win the game. Mattis walked it off with a bloop single to right that plated Gordon from third. The Otters thus won 9-8.

The comeback proved to be the Otters’ second stunning rally victory in a week, after Evansville overcame a six-run deficit entering the ninth inning Saturday against Lake Erie.

With the win, the Otters maintain sole possession of first place in the West Division, entering Thursday with a one-game lead over the Florence Y’alls.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. for Thursday’s rubber match from Bosse Field, and fans can follow a broadcast of the game on Frontier League LiveTV with a 6:20 p.m. pregame show.
