EPA Proposes Stronger Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles

EPA Proposes Stronger Standards for Heavy-Duty Vehicles to Promote Clean Air, Protect Communities, and Support Transition to Zero-Emissions Future

WASHINGTON (March 7, 2022) –Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing new, stronger standards to promote clean air and reduce pollution from heavy-duty vehicles and engines starting in model year (MY) 2027. The proposed standards would reduce emissions of smog- and soot-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) from heavy-duty gasoline and diesel engines and set updated greenhouse gas (GHG) standards for certain commercial vehicle categories.  This proposed rule would ensure the heavy-duty vehicles and engines that drive American commerce and connect people across the country are as clean as possible while charting a path to advance zero-emission vehicles in the heavy-duty fleet.

“Seventy-two million people are estimated to live near truck freight routes in America, and they are more likely to be people of color and those with lower incomes. These overburdened communities are directly exposed to pollution that causes respiratory and cardiovascular problems, among other serious and costly health effects,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “These new standards will drastically cut dangerous pollution by harnessing recent advancements in-vehicle technologies from across the trucking industry as it advances toward a zero-emissions transportation future.”

Consistent with President Biden’s Executive Order, “Strengthening American Leadership in Clean Cars and Trucks,” the proposed action would reduce NOx emissions from trucks by as much as 60 percent in 2045.  It would result in widespread air quality improvements across the United States, especially in areas already overburdened by air pollution and diesel emissions. The benefits of the proposed rule would exceed its costs by billions of dollars. EPA estimates that by 2045 the most ambitious option outlined in today’s proposal would result in the following annual benefits:

  • Up to 2,100 fewer premature deaths
  • 6,700 fewer hospital admissions and emergency department visits
  • 18,000 fewer cases of asthma onset in children
  • 3.1 million fewer cases of asthma symptoms and allergic rhinitis symptoms
  • 78,000 fewer lost days of work
  • 1.1 million fewer lost school days for children

Today’s action is the first step in EPA’s “Clean Trucks Plan” – a series of clean air and climate regulations that the agency will develop over the next three years to reduce pollution from trucks and buses and to advance the transition to a zero-emissions transportation future.

EPA’s goal is to deliver significant and needed public health benefits by designing a program that sets ambitious standards and that are feasible for the trucking industry after giving appropriate consideration to cost and other factors while supporting the American economy.  To accomplish this, EPA has engaged with stakeholders and identified several options in the proposal that address the robustness of the standards, the timing for phasing in the standards, options to incentivize early clean technology adoption, and improvements to emissions warranties. EPA is seeking input on these options and looking forward to continuing engagement through the public comment process.

The proposed revisions to existing GHG standards for MY2027 and beyond would set updated GHG emissions standards for subsectors where electrification is advancing at a more rapid pace.  These sectors include school buses, transit buses, commercial delivery trucks, and short-haul tractors. In a separate action, EPA will be setting new GHG emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles as soon as the model year 2030. This action will more comprehensively address the longterm trend towards zero-emissions vehicles across the heavy-duty sector.

Today’s proposal reflects input from stakeholders including community groups, manufacturers, and state, local, and tribal governments. EPA looks forward to hearing from all stakeholders involved in this important rulemaking. A public comment period and hearing will give stakeholders and the public an opportunity to comment on the proposal announced today and we look forward to engaging through this process.

UE Reports Strong Career Outcomes for 2021 Graduates

95 percent of alums employed or in graduate school within six months; median salary of $50K reported

EVANSVILLE, IN (03/07/2022) After surveying the class of 2021 graduates, the University of Evansville (UE) is pleased to report that 95 percent of graduates were employed or pursuing further education within six months of graduation. The median salary of those employed full-time was $50,000.

The survey, conducted annually, is a collaborative effort between the University’s Center for Career Development, Office of Institutional Effectiveness, and Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. Data was gathered from surveys at the time of graduation, as well as alumni surveys, academic department chairs, the National Student Clearinghouse, and other methods. Approximately 93 percent of 2021 graduates provided career information.

Outcomes improved from the previous year, which saw slightly lower rates due to the pandemic’s effect on the economy. Those outcomes included 91 percent of graduates employed or in graduate school within six months of graduating, as well as a median salary of $47,500.

“We are very committed at the University to provide an outstanding educational experience which includes essential career planning,” said Gene Wells, senior director of the Center for Career Development. “In addition to the hands-on training and internships students receive within their program, our office assists them with every step preparing for their future endeavors.”

For nearly a decade, the Center for Career Development has implemented an “end to end” approach to career success. When prospective student visits to campus, they meet with the Center to review career interests, take a free career assessment, and explore future job opportunities. As a student, the Center offers appointments to assist with resumes and cover letters, mock interviews, and career advising. Job fairs are held throughout the year to connect students with local and regional employers. After graduation, the Center continues its outreach to alums to ensure each individual’s success.

Students at the University of Evansville shape powerful and enduring change. UE is the first in Indiana to be designated as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus, and its change-making culture empowers students to improve the world around them as UE Changemakers. UE has an array of majors in business; engineering; the arts and sciences; and health science programs. UE has a diverse student body that represents 44 states and 52 countries. The Big Weigh-In Panel Discussion Planned for Thursday

Evansville, INThe Big Weigh-In, a panel discussion on weight and society, will take place at Ivy Tech Community College on March 10. The event will be at 2 p.m. in Vectren Auditorium, Room 147, on the main campus. The event is sponsored by the Department of Psychology and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The panel will feature Ivy Tech students, staff, professors, and alumni of all different shapes and sizes; and who have been of different sizes throughout their lives.  Refreshments will be provided.

“The discussion is an important one,” said Erica Nikko Johnson, program chair for the Department of Psychology. “We will be talking about the impact weight can have in society. Johnson said she lost weight after having had a baby, and noticed that some people who had been friendly with her, suddenly were not, and some who had never paid any attention to her suddenly did.

“In a conversation with my daughter I said I wondered if others experience this, and she suggested we have a discussion about it,” Johnson said. “So, we planned this event to have this conversation.”

She pointed out that in her psychology classes she likes to discuss topics that are not easy to talk about and get discussions started. “I want to give a voice to people who don’t have a voice,” she said.

The event is free and open to the public.

Eagles snare at-large bid to NCAA II Midwest Regional

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball was one of the 64 teams selected to participate in the 2022 NCAA Division II Tournament in an announcement by the national office Sunday night on NCAA.com.

The Screaming Eagles (24-5) earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament, which will take place March 11-14 in Ashland, Ohio. USI will take on the No. 4 seed, Walsh University, in the opening round Friday at Kates Gymnasium.

Top-seeded Ashland University will host this year’s regional and will play No. 8-seeded Ferris State University in the opening round.

Other first round matchups include the No. 2 seed, Grand Valley State University, taking on the No. 7 seed, Wayne State University, while the No. 3 seed, Drury University, will battle the No. 6 seed, University of Missouri-St. Louis, in the first round.

Friday’s game marks the first-ever meeting between USI and Walsh, which was the runner up in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Ashland was the GMAC Tournament champions, while Ferris State earned the automatic qualifier from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after upsetting Grand Valley State in the championship.

Drury won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title, while USI was the top-seed in the GLVC Tournament and is looking to rebound from a semifinal loss to Lewis University.

This year’s tournament marks the 12th time USI has been selected to compete in the NCAA II Tournament and the first time since 2020, when the regional was canceled due to COVID. USI last competed in the regional in 2018.

Izzy Vetter throws no-hitter against Creighton

Aces earn win over former MVC foe

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior Izzy Vetter threw her second no-hitter of the weekend on Sunday to clinch a 2-0 win over Creighton inside Cooper Stadium.

It was the third no-hitter of the season for Vetter and fourth of her career.  The senior struck out 13 batters and walked just four on the way to her 10th victory of the spring.  In 17 innings of work over the weekend, Vetter allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out 32 batters.  Evansville finished with three hits including the third home run of the season from Marah Wood.

A pair of runners were stranded in the first inning for UE and it looked like Creighton would take advantage in the top of the second, putting runners on first and third with no outs.  Vetter had other ideas and proceeded to strike out the side to keep things scoreless.  She racked up eight strikeouts in the opening four frames before the offense scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the inning.

Jenna Nink singled to lead the inning off with Dori Brown coming in to pinch run.  Productive outs saw Brown advance to third where the freshman proceeded to steal home for the first run of the game.  Marah Wood added a huge insurance run in the sixth, hitting a homer to right field.  In the seventh, Vetter took care of business, adding two more strikeouts to her tally to finish the victory.

Sunday’s finale against Bowling Green was called a no contest due to the rain and lightning in the area.  UE will be in action next weekend at the Racer Classic, which will be hosted by Murray State.

PREVOST SCORES LONE GOAL IN THUNDERBOLTS’ 5-1 LOSS TO STORM

0

Evansville, In.: Despite the Thunderbolts outshooting the Storm 41-30, Quad City managed to defeat Evansville for the second-straight night, 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ford Center. The Thunderbolts next home game will be on Friday, March 11th at 7:00pm CST as they host the Birmingham Bulls.  For tickets, call (812)422-BOLT (2658), buy online at EvansvilleThunderbolts.com, or buy tickets in person at the Ford Center Box Office.

The Thunderbolts started strong on the attack in the first period and at one point outshot Quad City 10-1, however the Storm managed to score on their only early shot, as Carter Shinkaruk put Quad City in front at the 7:42 mark.  Later in the period, Quad City converted on the power play as Connor Fries made it 2-0 at 17:09, and Ben Duperreault scored just over a minute later to make it 3-0 Quad City through the first period.

Fries scored once again 15:02 into the second period before the Thunderbolts finally got on the board, as Coy Prevost scored from Cameron Cook and Tyson Kirkby on the power play at 18:40 to make it 4-1.  Evansville was unable to build on that burst of momentum, and Tommy Tsicos scored for the Storm at 7:19 of the third period to wrap up the scoring at 5-1.

Prevost scored the lone goal for Evansville.  Ryan Edquist finished with 25 saves on 30 shots faced.  The Thunderbolts still only need 10 points out of 22 possible remaining to clinch a berth in the SPHL Playoffs.

The Thunderbolts are currently competing in their fifth season in the SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League). Season tickets are less than $9 per game.  To order your tickets for this season, call 812-422-BOLT(2658).

Eagle’s Fall to Warriors, 7-0

0

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Tennis fell to Wayne State University on Sunday, 7-0, in a neutral site in Indianapolis. The Screaming Eagles fall to 5-2 overall, while the Warriors improve to 8-2.

DOUBLES: The Eagles started off slowly as Wayne State took all three doubles-matches to claim the point.

SINGLES: USI continued their slow start in singles, as the Warriors took the number one, five, and six singles to claim the match win. The Eagles fought back in the number two, four, and three singles, but  junior Yahor Bahdanovich (Belarus), junior Lucas Sakamaki (Floyds Knobs, Indiana), and graduate student Spencer Blandford (Louisville, Kentucky) all fell in third set tiebreakers.
