THUNDERBOLTS HOLD ON IN BIRMINGHAM, DEFEAT BULLS 3-2
 
Pelham, Ala.:  The Thunderbolts built up a 3-0 lead, and Evansville’s defense along with goaltender Ty Taylor made the lead stick as Evansville won 3-2 over the Bulls in Pelham on Saturday night. The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Friday, January 24th against the Pensacola Ice Flyers at 7:05pm CT.
                Logan vande Meerakker opened the scoring for Evansville 3:50 into the first period by driving the net and scoring on the rebound, assisted by Myles Abbate and Matthew Hobbs.  Shortly afterward at 7:23, Hobbs deflected in a shot from Anthony Hora to extend the lead to 2-0, also assisted by Scott Kirton on Evansville’s lone power play of the evening.  In a strong second period for Evansville, the lead was further gapped to 3-0 as Brendan Harrogate scored at 10:41, set up by Scott Kirton and Aiden Wagner.  The goal for Harrogate marked his 100th point as a Thunderbolt, becoming the third player in franchise history, along with Kirton and Austin Plevy, to achieve the milestone.  The Bulls’ push back came in the third period, as Drake Glover scored a power play goal at 1:48, and with 10 seconds remaining, Carson Rose trimmed Evansville’s lead to 3-2, however the Thunderbolts successfully held on in the final seconds for the 3-2 victory to jump over Birmingham into 7th place in the league standings, and remain 6 points above the playoff line.
                Hobbs scored a goal and assist, Vande Meerakker and Harrogate scored one goal each, and Kirton tallied a pair of assists.  In goal, Ty Taylor finished with 38 saves on 40 shots for his 6th win of the season.  The Thunderbolts and Bulls’ next scheduled meeting will be on Friday, April 4th at Ford Center, face-off set for 7:05pm CT.

In 1 ST . Peter chapter 4 vs. 12 and 13 Peter says; “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you: but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.” Peter referred to the return of Christ. As to when that day will occur we do not know.

Christians may suffer before His return. Matthew 5 vs. 45 says; “It rains on the just and  unjust.” For those who know Jesus as Lord and Savior there is joy in knowing the meaning of Philippians chapter 3 vs. 20 which says; “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body.”

In a recent Pew Research article in the USA Today newspaper dated September 2, 2024 it says that in the 1990’s 9 of 10 American adults identified as Christian, by last year that number had dropped to 63%. That’s a stunning statistic which cannot be overlooked.

Has this country turned away from trust in the living God who sent us Jesus out of His love for mankind? In John chapter 6 the disciples of Jesus did not like what He said. Vs. 63 He says quote; “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Vs. 66 thru 68 says; From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve; “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Friends and Fellow Hoosiers,

As I close out my time as Lt. Governor, I wanted to thank you for your support over the last 8 years.
As Lt. Governor of Indiana, I served as President of the Senate and oversaw four state agencies.

I also am very proud to have chaired the Indiana Mental Health Roundtable and the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Task Force – both of which have a special place in my heart.

I’m grateful for all we have accomplished over the last 8 years on behalf of Hoosiers and communities across the state – especially House Bill 1384, which requires sixth graders to take a civics course, that derived from the Indiana Civic Education Task Force that I chaired in 2020.
It has been the honor of my life to serve Hoosiers at the Statehouse!

Mental Health
In 2021, I co-founded the Indiana Mental Health Roundtable to reduce the stigma, strengthen the delivery systems, and improve access and affordability.

In 2023, I testified in support of SEA 1 as the sitting Lt. Governor. This bill infused $100 million in new funding to lay the groundwork for expanding certified behavioral health centers in the state and the 9-8-8 National Suicide and Crisis Line across Indiana.

As Lt. Governor, I’ve hosted dozens of mental health discussions across communities throughout the state. The Indiana Mental Health Roundtable started hosting an annual summit in 2023 – bringing together leaders across the country to discuss various topics surrounding mental health.

And one of my favorite times of year has always been the State Fair. I’ve been thrilled to have the support to host the Mental Health Matters Day.

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Task Force
The Task Force was established by HEA 1102 in the 2017 General Assembly. I have been honored to chair this Task Force and be a voice for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities – including autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

As I always say: Our friends with disabilities are really just friends with different abilities, and they have the same dreams of every Hoosier and every American, to have friends, to have a job, to love and be loved…to be successful.

As my time in office comes to a close, Arc of Indiana honored me with the Lifetime Achievement Award for my commitment to advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Agriculture
As Secretary of Agriculture, I’ve been proud of the strides we have made here in Indiana under my tenure.

Recent reports show agriculture contributes more than $31.2 billion to the Hoosier economy, making Indiana the 10th largest agriculture state. More than 80 percent of Indiana’s land is devoted to farms and forests.

Agriculture production has grown 62% over the last 5 years, and Indiana remains a leader in top producer in the country of popcorn, gourds, duck, soybeans, corn, hogs, and much more.

Rural Affairs and Broadband
One of the four agencies I oversaw as Lt. Governor was the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

During my tenure, we advanced broadband and digital infrastructure, investing more than $273 million, connecting more than 70,000 homes and businesses.

Under my leadership, IN Main Street communities saw more than $493M in public investment and $1.6B in private investment. Additionally, 2,000 public improvement projects created more than 2,200 jobs.
Tourism and Housing
In 2018, we celebrated 40 years of the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority in 2018. Under my leadership, IHCDA launched HONOR Our Vets homebuyer program, we have helped tens of thousands of Hoosiers become homeowners, and invested millions in downpayment assistance and other programs. While overseeing the Indiana Destination Development Corporation, the IDDC received a nearly $20 million budget increase to invest in tourism efforts for the state.

As of the 2022 impact study:

  • Travel & Tourism sector accounted for 2.3% of Indiana’s Gross State Product. Tourism contributed $9.9 billion to Indiana’s economy.
  • Tourism- generated tax revenues increased 15.8% to a total of $2.8 billion. State and local taxes increased 16% to $1.6 billion.

Ivy Tech is now offering a free Citizenship Preparation Class

What: Ivy Tech’s First Citizenship Prep Class

When: Monday, Jan. 13, 5:45 p.m.

Where:  Ivy Tech Evansville Main Campus
3501 N. First Avenue Room 120

Ivy Tech is now offering a free Citizenship Preparation Class.

The 12-week program meets at Ivy Tech, at 3501 N. First Avenue on Mondays, from 6-7 p.m.

The program is open to legal permanent residents who are ready to pursue citizenship. The course will cover U.S. civics, reading and writing portions of the citizenship test and practice interviews. The program will be offered through Sagrario’s Joy, a local network of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of immigrants from all nations.

Indiana Grown awards $25,000 in grants to members for trade show exhibitions

Indiana Grown, the state’s only agricultural marketing initiative, has announced seven members received a total of $25,000 in grant funding to promote their products at trade shows nationwide.

Tradeshows offer vital exposure to unique customers and business-to-business clients, but barriers for members include the booth fee, travel expenses, set up costs and more. This grant was designed to alleviate some of those costs to ensure Hoosier businesses are highlighted and Indiana-made products can be enjoyed both nationally and internationally.

This was a competitive grant process and grants were awarded to businesses with commercially ready products who want to expand.

The Indiana Grown program has over 1,500 members who grow, raise, process or produce agriculture related products. This program helps promote local businesses and expand their markets to national and international buyers.

Bee Great from Churubusco

Smoking Goose from Indianapolis

Tulip Tree Creamery and Smoking Goose will be using the funding to attend the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City. Other winners will be attending the National Restaurant Show in Chicago and the Snacks and Sweets Expo in Indianapolis.
